The Jim Watts Memorial Handicap Billiards Doubles Championship 2018-2019 Final
The Jim Watts Memorial Billiards Doubles semi-finals and final were played on the same night at Sarisbury Social Club, between reigning champions Park Gate’s Chris Christodoulou and Steve Boterhoek, Curdridge’s RBL’s Gwen Gamblin and Clive Gamblin, Curdridge’s Derek Fry and Brian Bull and St Denys Cons' Mark Emm and Derek King.
The first to 200 points format is played with both individuals handicaps being added together and averaged out to give a pairs handicap. The first pairing was Fry and Bull playing off of an averaged handicap of +65, playing Emm and King, who saw themselves cueing off of +45. Fry and Bull tried their hardest to compile some breaks, but Emm and King prevailed by 200-161, helped by a couple of high twenty plus breaks to reach their first SDBSA doubles final.
The other table had holders Christodoulou and Boterhoek start off of +70 against husband and wife pairing Gamblin and Gamblin, playing off of +70 as well. Both pairs struggled somewhat with the ‘alien’ conditions of the right hand table of two, compared to their own home club tables. But current champions Christodoulou and Boterhoek prevailed by 200-142, to give themselves the chance of back-to-back cup victories.
The choice was given to the coin-toss winner, to choose the playing table for the final. Christodoulou and Boterhoek had no hesitation in choosing the table they had just played on after guessing correctly. Well it proved decisive, in that Emm and King struggled to find the consistency they had in the first game, as league President, Sid Hunt refereed and presided over his first final for a while witnessed.
Christodoulou had not told anyone about it being his 50th birthday the day after the final, but a great early birthday present was not to be denied, as he completed consecutive doubles titles with his friend and playing partner Boterhoek by 200-124. Happy birthday and well done Chris and Steve!

Totton's Aldridge and Fitzpatrick win their first billiards doubles trophy
Jim Watts Memorial Billiards Doubles Handicap Trophy Wednesday 27 April 2016, Chandlers Ford Central
The Southampton and District Billiards league’s Jim Watts Memorial Billiards Doubles Championship, played at Chandlers Ford Central, had some fine drama to even rival the Crucible’s World Snooker Championship!
The perfect draw for the neutral ensued as both Park Gate pairings, Chris Pullen and Ian Finch (receive +90) and Paul Lawrence and Paul Tavender (receive +20) were drawn against each other, and Totton’s Steve Allen and Mick Kunzi (receive -55) faced their compatriots Tony Aldridge and Lee Fitzpatrick (receive +65).
Lawrence and Tavender, The 2015 defending champions, were playing catch-up against their fellow teammates Pullen and Finch, after Finch had made a 19 break and numerous smaller efforts. Lawrence came back with some fine in-offs to make a 19 of his own, but neither players could find the fluency that has seen him and his partner move down to a commendable +20 in the handicap rankings. Finch then made a 15 break to help pull away and eventually win by 200-128.
In the other semi-final, Aldridge and Fitzpatrick consolidated their 120-point handicap advantage with numerous small breaks, but could not stamp their authority on the match in a way that they would have wanted to. Allen and Kunzi tried their hardest to claw back the gap, but they also struggled to find their fine league form. Kunzi found his range in the dying moments with a 20 break, made up of some fine long losers, but Aldridge and Fitzpatrick would not be denied as they ran out 200-101 victors.
The final had Pullen and Finch starting with a +25 point handicap advantage, and they started well, with Finch in particular showing why he is one of the most improved billiards players this season. With Pullen using all his experience in weighing up each shot carefully as they closed in on the 160 points mark, it looked as if the crown was theirs for the taking. But Totton’s Fitzpatrick showed his billiards promise by making breaks of 20 and 24, made up of some fine long in-offs, to pull the scores to near parity. And this was after Aldridge had gone 10 visits to the table without scoring, unheard of for the billiards aficionado!
With both pair’s scores hovering around the 185 mark, it was left to Aldridge to hold himself together to play a long in-off the red ball, then a middle pocket loser, followed by a drop cannon to push the red ball towards the right hand pocket. The spectators thought he would pot this with the rest. But no, he went for a thin in-off yellow into the left top pocket that sent the yellow up and down the table! This left him just to pot his opponents yellow for a fantastic first doubles trophy by 200-187. Well done Tony and Lee!

Park Gate Pauls are seeing double!
The Jim Watts Memorial Billiards Doubles Handicap Trophy, Wednesday 29 April, Shirley Cons
Park Gate's Paul Lawrence and Paul Tavender made it two wins in two years for the Park Gate club (Chris Christodoulou and Mark Stansmore taking the inaugural trophy last season), as they defeated Churchills Eastleigh's Dave Baker and Mike Henstredge in the Jim Watts Memorial Billiards Doubles Handicap final held at Shirley Cons.
The semi final draw was made on the night and paired Baker and Henstredge (combined handicap of +70) against Totton Rec's duo of Brian Cannons and Dan Stone (combined handicap of +120). In a tense battle of nerves, the Totton boys kept their handicap advantage right up until the home straight but lost out by an agonising 200-195! Stone contributed as Cannons was not left a clear-cut shot for nearly 20 minutes! Churchill's Baker played consistently throughout the game and with Henstredge contributing at the start, they kept their dream of a first final victory alive.
In the other all Park Gate semi final, Lawrence and Tavender (combined handicap of +40) faced up to compatriots Chris Christodoulou and new partner Steve Boterhoek (combined handicap of +60). Lawrence and Tavender played well to lead early on, but Christodoulou showed his potting prowess to make breaks of 25 and 31 to close the gap. Boterhoek admitted that he did not contribute as he would of liked in the match, but he should be proud of reaching a first doubles semi. The brace of Pauls responded, and it was left to Lawrence to appropriately win the game with an in-off red, 200-182.
In the final, Lawrence and Tavender quickly made in-roads into the 30 point handicap deficit, and played some fine billiards shots, mixed with some accurate potting. Baker and Henstredge rallied somewhat in the middle portion of the game, but could not stop the Park Gate pair from winning comfortably by 200-123, thanks in part to a fine break of 30 from the cue of Tavender. Well done Paul and Paul!

Park Gate pair win the inaugural
2013-2014 Jim Watts Memorial Billiards Handicap Doubles Trophy
The late Jim Watts, a fine billiards player who played for Castle Club snooker and billiards hall, would have been proud of friends Chris Christodoulou and Mark Stansmore, as they won the inaugural Jim Watts Memorial Billiards Doubles Handicap Championship played at Churchills Eastleigh.
The semi finals were played between Curdridge’s Derek Fry and Brian Bull (receive +85) verses Hamble’s Tony Spridgeon and Will Mildenhall (receive +30), and Park Gate’s Christodoulou and Stansmore (receive +80) verses Curdridge’s Gwen Gamblin and husband Clive (receive + 75).
The Gamblin’s couldn’t reach the heady heights of their performance against Paul Adams and Derek Foster in the quarter finals, but Clive made an early break of 14 and a 12, however Christodoulou and Stansmore made breaks of 17 and 14 to win by 200-161.
In the other semi, Fry and Bull, spurred on by Fry’s Stuart Hamper Individual Handicap Challenge final victory, made short work of Spridgeon and Mildenhall, winning by 200-121. It could have been so different though as the Hamble boys scored 29 points in quick succession at the start of the game. Fry played some fine touch billiards though and Bull was decisive at the end, as he made the highest break of the night, a fine 25 when requiring 31 for the game.
The final had Fry and Bull using the yellow ball and shooting first. However it was Christodoulou and Stansmore who made the first telling score with their white ball – a break of 15. Back came Bull with a 19 break (which included a fluked six shot with an in-off red and pot red at the end of it!) narrowly missing an all-round three cushion cannon for 21. Fry and Bull then made runs of 11 and 10 to lead by 140 to 112. Then after numerous single ball scores, Christodoulou made a 16 break to bring the scores to an exciting 146 to 144 in their favour.
Bull then found himself stretching to reach a pot white into the ‘green ball’ snooker pocket, but fouled by making a push-shot when he should have been using the rest! The Park Gate potters then pulled clear by 160 to 148, and then made a 10 break to lead 185 to 152. It was left to Stansmore to conjure up the billiard skills his father had shown him, and make five consecutive in-offs and a cannon, for an unfinished break of 16 to take a well-deserved first billiards doubles trophy. Well done Chris and Mark.
