SARISBURY'S FINE WIN AT HAMBLE HELPS CHURCHILLS TO WIN SECOND PLACE IN THE LEAGUE
2013-2014 Billiards League – Week 27 – 30 May 2014
Sarisbury Social rolled back the years with a fine 6-0 whitewash of third placed Hamble Social on the final day of the Southampton Billiards League, which helped Churchills Eastleigh retain second place behind champions Chandlers Ford Central.
Sarisbury’s veterans started well with Geoff Knapp beating Tony Spridgeon by 58 points but the next three games were much closer affairs. Norman Bradfield beat Steve Cottrell by five points and then Dave Leeworthy overcame Rob Shattock by 15. The fourth pairing had Hamble’s Will Mildenhall making a 36 break, but to no avail as his opponent John Oldfield won by 14. Sarisbury’s maestro Stan Pitts finished things off in style by overcoming Paul Knights by 42 points.
Shirley Cons finished their session off in style with a 5-1 win away at Hythe Social. Shirley’s Mike Thatcher and Ian Hine got their team off to a perfect start as they beat Wayne Crotty and Martin Crotty. Back came Hythe with Warren Renyard overcoming Sid Hunt, but Keith Castles made it 3-1 with his narrow nine points win over Brian Price. Shirley’s Malcolm Willis sealed the victory thanks to his win over Wayne Chiverton, which included a 32 break.
Park Gate RBL made it back-to-back 5-1 wins – this time it was against visiting Totton Rec. Winners for RBL were Paul Tavender, Mark Stansmore Chris Christodoulou and Steve Boterhoek against Mike Kunzi, John Ransome, Tony Aldridge and Brian McCarthy. Wedged in-between Park Gate’s four wins was a fine victory for Totton’s youngster Lee Fitzpatrick over Paul Lawrence.
Churchills gained second place but could not stop visiting Curdridge RBL from winning 4-2 on the final game of the night. It started badly for Churchills as Curdridge’s Clive Gamblin played well to decisively beat Derek Foster and Nick Alford overcame Peter Green for a two nil lead.
Back came the home side with Dave Baker making an early 30 break against Brian Bull, and eventually winning by 200-188. Paul Adams looked well beaten by a determined Dave Fry, but clawed his way back to win by a nail biting two points 200-198, helped by a 34 break. Curdridge’s Billiards Handicap Champion Derek Fry continued his good form by finishing the match with a win over good friend Mike Henstredge.
Chandlers Ford Central had this week’s bye and the great relief of winning the league title on their last match, last week!

CONGRATULATIONS TO CHANDLERS FORD CENTRAL – THE NEW SOUTHAMPTON BILLIARDS LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 2013-2014
2013-2014 Billiards League – Week 26 – 23 May 2014
Superb Chandlers Ford Central have won the Southampton Billiards League after they drew 3-3 with visitors Hythe Social. This meant 2011-2012 champions Churchills Eastleigh and 2012-2013 champions Hamble Social cannot catch them with one match remaining.
Hythe started well, with in-form Wayne Crotty making breaks of 65, 42 and 38 in decisively beating John Mullane by 200-13, who nearly made the highest league break of the season, but broke down on a tantalising 99, requiring five more points to eclipse his teammate Daniel Zagaroli’s 103, made earlier in the season.
Chandler’s Trevor Thorne squared the match by overcoming Hythe’s Martin Crotty, and Chandler’s Daniel Zagaroli made breaks of 54, 34, 32 and 36 during his win against Wayne Chiverton. Hythe’s Warren Renyard then kept his nerve to pip Terry Azor by one point, and that was after Azor had made runs of 53, 42 and another 42. This set up a marvellous finish with Chandler's Graham Hollick narrowly beating Brian Price by eight points. But Hythe had done enough to win the aggregate by 910 to 812.
Shirley Cons had a fantastic 957 to 936 aggregate points victory out at Sarisbury Social. Ian Hine set the ball rolling with his win over Norman Bradfield, but back came Sarisbury with Stan Pitt’s seven-point victory against Keith Castles. John Oldfield then beat Shirley’s Sid Hunt by only one point! Sarisbury then took control thanks to Dave Leeworthy’s welcome return to form in beating Adrian Bridger. This set up the exciting finish with Mike Thatcher's super twenty points win over Geoff Knapp.
Totton Rec had a superb 4-2 win over last seasons champions Hamble Social, with wins for Mike Kunzi, who made a 51 break against Nick Wood, Brian Cannons against Steve Cottrell and Tony Aldridge over Marc Shirley. Hamble rallied with victories for Rob Shattock against Lee Fitzpatrick and Tony Spridgeon verses Jason Smith.
Park Gate RBL belied their lowly league table position by comprehensively beating Churchills 5-1 at home, on two superb tables. Park Gate’s Steve Boterhoek beat Mark Adams and Paul Tavender decisively overcame Churchill’s Paul Adams, despite breaks of 47, 35 and 32. Derek Foster pipped Park Gate’s Paul Lawrence by 14, making a 31 break in the process, and Chris Pullen beat Churchill’s Peter Green. It was left to Mark Stansmore to finish by beating Simon Green.

CHANDLERS FORD CLOSING IN ON THE TITLE
2013-2014 Billiards League – Week 25 – 10 May 2014
League leaders Chandlers Ford Central took a giant leap towards the Southampton Billiards League title after they beat hosts Sarisbury Social 5-1
With only two matches to go (Chandlers have one match remaining – having a bye on the last week) they lead 2012 champions Churchills Eastleigh by 10 points (although Churchills have a game in hand with a total of twelve points on offer) and only a catastrophe can stop them from becoming champions.
They started well with John Mullane making 49, 65 and a 75 unfinished break against Stan Pitts – great preparation for the defence of his Southampton Senior Billiards title next Thursday 22 May in the semi-finals at Totton Rec. Then another semi-finalist, Terry Azor, made a fine 81 to go with a 53 during his win over Dave Leeworthy.
Ray Smith then beat Sarisbury’s John Oldfield (47 break) and Chandlers Ford’s new Basingstoke signing Trevor Thorne overcame Norman Bradfield. In the last game, Sarisbury salvaged some pride with Geoff Knapp (42 break) beating Graham Hollick.
Churchills Eastleigh leapfrogged second-placed Hamble Social after a 5-1 victory over visitors Totton Rec. Derek Foster set up the win, decisively overcoming Mike Kunzi and Peter Green made it 2-0 with a win against Josh Barnes. Simon Green played level handicap opponent Tony Aldridge and won by 19, and Paul Adams made 32, 48 and 38 in hauling back 16-year-old newcomer Lee Fitzpatrick – who promises to become a good billiards player with the help of his Totton teammates. With 6-0 looming, Totton’s Brian Cannons made a fine 26 break against Mike Henstredge, who replied with 20, to win by 42 and save the whitewash.
Curdridge RBL started well against visitors Park Gate RBL with Clive Gamblin beating Chris Pullen by a nail-biting three points! This spurred Park Gate into action though, as they reeled off three games in a row. First Paul Lawrence beat Rob Smith, then Mark Stansmore was decisive against Brian Bull and Steve Boterhoek overcame Nick Alford. Curdridge’s Derek Fry finished proceedings by beating Paul Tavender by three points.
Shirley Cons did Churchills a huge favour as they beat current champions Hamble Social 4-2. Hamble started well with Steve Cottrell overcoming Mike Thatcher, but back came Shirley, winning three games on the spin. Keith Castles beat Paul Knights, Malcolm Willis was decisive in his win against Will Mildenhall and Ian Hine got back to winning ways by beating Mark Shirley. Hamble’s saviour was Tony Spridgeon as he overcame Sid Hunt in the last pairing.

CURDRIDGE'S FINE WIN OVER HAMBLE SOCIAL GIVES CHANDLERS FORD CENTRAL THE ADVANTAGE
2013-2014 Billiards League – Week 24 – 3 May 2014
Curdridge Royal British Legion had the result of their season so far, as they beat hosts and current champions Hamble Social 4-2 in the Southampton Billiards League.
It started well for Hamble, as Tony Spridgeon beat newly crowned Stuart Hamper Individual Handicap Billiards champion Derek Fry by 200-168. Curdridge then were spun into action though, as they reeled of three games in a row. First it was Brian Bull who beat Stuart Hamper semi finalist Steve Cottrell, and then Nick Alford beat another semi finalist, Rob Shattock. Rob Smith then pipped Mark Shirley by a narrow eight points to leave the aggregate poised at 736 to 768.
Hamble’s Paul Knights salvaged some pride for the title holders (as he had done against Churchills the week before) by beating Clive Gamblin by an even closer 200-197, but Curdridge had done enough to win the aggregate by 965 to 936 and take the overall match score.
Churchills Eastleigh visited Shirley Cons and were slightly worried over reports that the tables were not quite up to scratch. They had nothing to worry about, as they witnessed two tables that were superbly prepared by Mike Thatcher and helped contribute to a good match.
Eastleigh’s Mike Henstredge played one of his best games of the current campaign as he beat Ian Hine, but back came Shirley with SDBSA President Sid Hunt beating Derek Foster. Mike Thatcher had obviously prepared the table that Mike Finn beat Dave Mumford on in the Social Clubs snooker final recently, too well for Paul Adams liking, as he made breaks of 45 and 54 during his 200-135 win.
Churchills hold on the match was strengthened after Peter Green overcame Adrian Bridger, which set up a tense last game between the evenly handicap matched Malcolm Willis and Dave Baker. Both players played some fine cannons, but it was Bakers’ all round game on the night that prevailed with a 200-161 victory.
Chandlers Ford Central came up against their toughest challenge yet in the last section of the campaign – a trip to Park Gate RBL, but they were up to the task as they completed a 4-2 win.
Daniel Zagaroli continued his scintillating form as he made a 71 unfinished against Chris Pullen, and John Mullane went one better in the scoring stakes as he made breaks of 92, 50 and 45 during his win over Paul Tavender. Back came Park Gate with Steve Boterhoek’s fine win against Terry Azor, but Chandlers made it 3-1 after Graham Hollick had beaten Chris Christodoulou. Park Gate’s Paul Lawrence made it two games for his side by overcoming Ray Smith, but Chandlers had done enough.
Hythe Social had a great 4-2 win over visitors Sarisbury Social, but it could have been very different as Sarisbury took a 2-1 lead. Sarisbury’s Geoff Knapp started proceedings with a win against Martin Crotty, but Hythe’s Brian Price played well to beat Dave Leeworthy decisively. Stan Pitts made a 43 break in his victory over Hythe’s Rob Tennant who made a 30 break. Hythe then took control with Wayne Crotty making breaks of 32 and 39 during his win against Norman Bradfield and Wayne Chiverton finished things off by beating Sarisbury’s captain John Oldfield.
Totton Rec had this week’s bye.

CAN ANYONE CATCH CHANDLERS FORD CENTRAL?..
2013-2014 Billiards League – Week 23 – 26 April 2014
Chandlers Ford Central's fine form continued with a superb 5-1 victory over visitors Totton Rec in the Southampton Billiards league, and with four matches to go it looks as if the title is within their grasp.
Chandlers Ford's Daniel Zagaroli got the ball rolling, making breaks of 72, 50, 44 and 30 during his win over Tony Aldridge, who nearly got over the line, losing by only 20 points. Terry Azor 'got out of jail' with a nail biting two points win against Brian Cannons, but Totton's new boy Lee Fitzpatrick played a fine game to beat demon potter Wayne Muddiman.
Totton's rapidly improving Graham Hollick then beat Mike Kunzi, and Ray Smith overcame Totton's Steve Allen to put the aggregate and match beyond doubt for the table-toppers.
Curdridge RBL had a great 6-0 whitewash over visitors Hythe Social. Wins for Clive Gamblin against Wayne Crotty, Rob Smith over Martin Crotty, Brian Bull verses Rob Tennant, newly crowned Stuart Hamper Challenge winner Derek Fry, but by only two points against Wayne Chiverton, and Gwen Gamblin in the last pairing verses Warren Renyard saw the countrysiders home.
An amazing match unfolded at third placed Churchills Eastleigh verses second placed Hamble Social. Churchill's Derek Foster played the game of his season, as he made a superb 71 break during his win over Nick Wood (41 and 37 break), and Simon Green made it 2-0 after his comprehensive victory over Will Mildenhall. But back came Hamble with Rob Shattock's large win against Mark Adams and Steve Cottrell taking a deserved early lead over Paul Adams.
But back came Adams, making inroads into the deficit to leave himself requiring 25 for the game with Cottrell needing only two. Inexplicably though, the Churchill's number one, at the top of the table with all three balls close together, missed a simple cannon completely and gave a very relieved Cottrell a two points foul, and the game!
This set up a great last pairing between the improving Dave Baker and Paul Knights, with Churchills leading by 19 points on the overall team aggregate score. Both players played some fine shots but it looked as if Knights would win by more than 19 to take the match 4-2. But back came Baker with some great cannons to ease past the 182 target, only for Knights to win by 200-183 – but Baker had done enough to rescue an amazing 3-3 draw, winning the overall aggregate by 858-856!

TOTTON TOO HOT FOR SARISBURY SOCIAL!
2013-2014 Billiards League – Week 22 – 12 April 2014
Totton Rec had a fine 4-2 victory over visitors Sarisbury Social in the Southampton Billiards League, and Totton's captain Steve Allen made a fine job of writing a resume (below) of the proceedings!
"(1) Tony was off to a flying in good form with his trade mark 3 or 4 cushion cannons, but Stan fired back with his normal quite fire breaks which kept the game in the balance. But it was Tony who kept his nerve to run out.
(2) Looked a good game on paper, but Mike never really found this form or confidence, Dave was steady if not on his best form which was enough. Mike did get within 20 points, but it was one of those game were every time he missed it left good position for Dave.
(3) New boy Jason was drafted in as late replacement for Josh, never going too be easy against the old grinder Geoff. But things didn't start well as Geoff picked his cue case up for game only to find he'd forgotten his keys, well it was a cue out of the rack, which was never going to be easy. Jason looked nerveless and scoring an eight shot in the process, Geoff never really getting on will the rack cue, reverted to Stan's cue immediately playing a Stan special. Jason kept his nerve, may have to teach him some billiard shots.
(4) Looked to be another tussle, but Steve was out of sorts with his game, which Norman took full advantage of playing some good billiards with the help of the better run of the balls. Steve did eventually make some progress and it was down to a safety battle for the home straight, Norman survived.
(5) A good test for the youngster, with John back and in good form, he rapidly reduced the handicap with Lee sat on his ass admiring for long periods. But he keep his bottle playing some good billiard shots between some good potting. Again coming down to the home straight, John looked favourite having a good chance to run out but broke down needing 13, Lee took a very good long pot white to leave him an awkward pot red to the middle for game, which he coolly despatched. Lee said afterwards he's never been so nervous in his life."
In other matches Hythe Social had a fine 4-2 win at Park Gate RBL. Winners for Hythe were Wayne Chiverton over Chris Pullen, a great first victory for Martin Crotty against Steve Boterhoek, and Rob Tennant verses Mark Stansmore. Park Gate replied with wins for Paul Lawrence against Mike Rose by only six points and Paul Tavender verses Warren Renyard.
Shirley Cons fought back to draw 3-3 with hosts Curdridge RBL, and that was after losing the first two tables. Winners for Curdridge were Rob Smith against Ian Hine, Clive Gamblin over Sid Hunt, and in the last pairing, Brian Bull against Malcolm Willis (36 break).
Shirley's two victories came from Keith Castle's great win over Derek Fry, which all but secured the aggregate point, and Mike Thatcher over Nick Alford.
It was honours shared between Churchills Eastleigh and visitors and table toppers Chandlers Ford Central. Churchills took a 2-0 lead thanks to wins for Dave Baker over Graham Hollick, who made a fine 32 break and Derek Foster beating Daniel Zagaroli (30, 31 and 78).
But back came Chandlers with decisive wins for a "nervous", in his own words, but determined Ray Smith and John Mullane (44, 39, 48, 54) against the Adams' boys! The win of the evening was Churchill's Peter Green as he played on the unfamiliar to him, tighter number one table, against Chandler's captain Terry Azor. It was nip and tuck all the way to the last 20 points and with it looking as if Azor would win with a relatively easy in-off, missed to let Green in to wrap up a startling win.

CHURCHILL'S ENJOY THEIR TRIP TO HYTHE SOCIAL
2013-2014 Billiards League – Week 21 – 2 April 2014
Churchills Eastleigh had an unexpected 5-1 victory out at Hythe Social in the Southampton Billiards League, a place where Hythe normally win against the Eastleigh side.
The match started well for the Churchills as Dave Baker made a 30 break during his nail biting 200-193 win over Hythe's Brian Price, and soon after that, Churchill's number one Paul Adams added a winning break of 64 unfinished to breaks of 37 and 39 to beat a keen Martin Crotty 200-178.
Hythe's Rob Tennant had a battle with Derek Foster, with the Churchill's man eventually winning by 200-171, to give his team a 3-0 lead. Then the spectacle of the evening unfolded, as Hythe's Wayne Crotty compiled a fine break of 82 against Mike Henstredge (narrowly missing a pot red into a top corner pocket, while at the top-of-the-table, after becoming hampered with his opponents white falling close behind his cue-ball after a close cannon) when a century beckoned!
With the aggregate only 9 points in favour of Churchills the last pairing was to be crucial. Hythe's Wayne Chiverton started well against Peter Green but could not stop the Churchill's man from picking up the pace in the last quarter of the game, for a 200-173 win.
Chandlers Ford Central continues at the top after they beat visitors Curdridge RBL 4-2. Winners for Chandlers were Terry Azor (43 and 36) against Clive Gamblin; Daniel Zagaroli (32, 63, 78 and 42) verses a shell-shocked Nick Alford and Satpal Hans over Gwen Gamblin.
Curdridge fought back with wins for Rob Smith (32 break) over Chandler's Ray Smith and Derek Fry against Graham Hollick.
Hamble Social kept in touch with Chandlers Ford by beating visitors Park Gate RBL 4-2, but that was only down to a wonderful finish by Hamble's Paul Knights as he made an aggregate pinching and game winning break of 31 unfinished, in the last game of the evening – phew!
It started well for Park Gate as Steve Boterhoek beat Tony Spridgeon, but Hamble drew level thanks to Steve Cottrell's win over Paul Tavender – thanks to a timely break of 19 unfinished.

2013-2014 Billiards League – Week 17 – 19 February 2014
It looked as if Hythe Social were going to be beaten 5-1 by visiting Chandlers Ford Central, until captain Wayne Crotty and Wayne Chiverton turned the aggregate score around to gain an unlikely 3-3 draw with the final two pairings of the match!
Chandlers started well with wins for Ray Smith, Terry Azor and Wayne Muddiman (30 break) against Martin Crotty, Brian Price and Rob Tennant respectively. But it was captain Crotty to the rescue, as he made breaks of 37, 38 and a fine 63 to beat newcomer Austen Petty. It was left to Chiverton to secure the draw after overcoming Daniel Zagaroli in the last game.
Shirley Cons had a fine 4-2 victory over visitors Sarisbury Social. Sarisbury started well with Stan Pitts making a 41 break during his win over Mike Thatcher. Shirley's Malcolm Willis then beat Geoff Knapp, only for Sarisbury to take the lead again, after Norman Bradfield's victory over Mark Emm.
Shirley's Keith Castle's squared the match by beating Dennis Hushley to set up a last game decider. Shirley's Sid Hunt was up to the task as he beat Dave Leeworthy for a well-deserved team win by only ten points on the team aggregate 953 to 943.
Park Gate RBL completed the double over last year's runners-up Churchill's Eastleigh, as they won 4-2 again. Winners for Park Gate were Paul Tavender against Derek Foster (38 and 30); Chris Christodoulou verses Simon Green and Paul Lawrence over Mark Adams. Churchill's saviours were Dave Baker against Chris Pullen by five points and Mike Henstredge over Mark Stansmore.

CHANDLERS FORD CENTRAL BEAT THE LEADERS TO GO TOP OF THE LEAGUE
2013-2014 Billiards League – Week 14 – 15 January 2014
Chandlers Ford climbed to the top of the Southampton Billiards League after beating hosts and previous leaders Totton Rec 4-2.
It started well for Totton as Josh Barnes (38 break) beat Terry Azor by only seven points, and that was after Azor had made a 68 break. But Chandlers fought back with Wayne Muddiman decisive in the aggregate score, as he overcame Mike Kunzi by 66 points.
Tony Hannam then gave his team the lead after beating Totton’s Brian Cannons. Totton’s Steve Allen then beat Daniel Zagaroli (67 and 38 breaks) to level the match. It was left to Chandler’s Ray Smith to overcome Tony Aldridge by 85 points to seal the aggregate point and the win.
Current champions Hamble social had a fine 5-1 win over last years runners-up Churchills Eastleigh, but it could have been the other way around as Churchills Dave Baker beat Steve Cottrell in a good first pairing.
Hamble’s Will Mildenhall then pipped Mike Henstredge by eight points and Tony Spridgeon beat Churchill’s Peter Green by only seven! Hamble’s Nick Wood was in no mood to give his game away as he made a fine 46 break and played some great containing safety shots to freeze out Derek Foster.
Hamble's Paul Knights started well against Paul Adams and built up a healthy lead. Adams made a fine 52 break but left the fight back a shade too late as Knights ran out a worthy winner
Sarisbury Social moved up into fourth place after winning the aggregate by an amazing one point against hosts Bitterne Royal British Legion for a 4-2 victory!
In the first game Bitterne’s Paul Lawrence beat Dave Leeworthy by 105 points, to look as if the aggregate point was never going to be in doubt. Sarisbury’s Norman Bradfield then overcame Paul Tavender to level, Bitterne’s Chris Pullen then beat Geoff Knapp, but Sarisbury’s John Oldfield beat Steve Boterhoek to square the match. It was left to veteran Stan Pitts to beat Mark Stansmore to pinch the aggregate by that amazing single point. Well done Sarisbury!
Curdridge Royal British Legion visited Hythe Social and started well, with Derek Fry beating Martin Crotty by only nine points. And it got better for the countrysiders as Gwen Gamblin overcame Hythe's Brian Price for a 2-0 lead
This was the turning point as Hythe won the next three games, thanks to Rob Tennant (30 break) verses Clive Gamblin, Wayne Crotty (35 and 38 breaks) against Nick Alford and Wayne Chiverton over Brian Bull, to run out 4-2 victors.

CHURCHILLS EASTLEIGH GET AN EARLY CHRISTMAS PRESENT
2013-2014 Billiards League – Week 12 – 18 December 2013
Churchills Eastleigh had the best pre-Christmas present of all, as they whitewashed visitors Hythe Social 6-0 in the Southampton Billiards League.
Churchill's Simon Green got the ball rolling as he beat Rob Tennant 200-172 and that was followed by a humdinger of a game between Hythe's Wayne Crotty and Churchill's Paul Adams.
Crotty started in stunning potting form, making a 41 break and numerous 20s, as he built up a huge lead, but as the game progressed Adams found his range and made telling contributions of 58, 39 and 38 to pull ahead and win by 11 points.
Churchill's Derek Foster (29 and 28) extended his team's lead by overcoming Wayne Chiverton by 200-112, and Mark Adams (29 break) was in superb form as he beat welcome substitute player Martin Crotty 200-173. It was left to Dave Baker to finish proceedings with a 21 unfinished and beat Brian Price 200-172 for a fine victory.
Hamble Social visited Bitterne RBL and left with a fine 5-1 victory, but it could have been a 4-2 win for Bitterne as Paul Tavender and Steve Boterhoek lost by five and three points respectively.
Winners for Hamble were, Paul Knights (playing his "very best game") against Chris Christodoulou, Steve Cottrell (38 break) verses Paul Lawrence, Tony Spridgeon against Paul Tavender and Will Mildenhall against Steve Boterhoek. Bitterne's shining star was veteran Chris Pullen who beat Nick Wood (31 break).
The stronghold of Curdridge RBL did not yield to visitors Chandlers Ford Central, as they went down 4-2 to some determined play from the countrysiders. Curdridge's Clive Gamblin made a fine 43 break during his win against Tony Hannam, but Chandler's Austen Petty roared back to beat Brian Bull to level.
Nick Alford overcame Ray Smith to give Curdridge the lead again, but Chandler's Daniel Zagaroli made breaks of 78, 39 and 33 to beat Derek Fry and square the match again. It was left to Fry's son Dave to overcome Chandler's captain Terry Azor to give his side a fine win.
Totton's match with visitors Shirley Cons swung one way then the other as both sides vied for the top spot in the league. Shirley's Mike Thatcher and Malcolm Willis (33 break) gave their side the perfect start as they beat Josh Barnes and Mike Kunzi respectively.
But Totton fought back with wins for Brian Cannons against Ian Hine, and Steve Allen (33 break) verses Keith Castles. Going into the last game Shirley led 727-698 on the total team aggregate score. Totton's Tony Aldridge managed to win the game aginst Adrian Bridger 200-190, but could not stop Shirley from pinching the aggregate 917-898 for a great 3-3 draw.

HYTHE'S WONDERFUL WIN OVER LEADERS TOTTON REC
2013-2014 Billiards League – Week 11 – 11 December 2013
Hythe Social welcomed leaders Totton Rec in the Southampton Billiards League and handed out only their third loss this season.
It started badly for the hosts, as Totton's Josh Barnes beat Rob Tennant by 60 points. And when Totton's Mike Kunzi overcame Brian Price it looked as if it was 'business as usual' for the league leaders.
However, Warren Renyard gave Hythe hope, as he beat experienced Tony Aldridge and captain Wayne Crotty made a 40 break during his win over Brian Cannons, to level at 2-2. It was left to Hythe's Wayne Chiverton to make a 34 break during his winning game with Totton's captain Steve Allen, to turn the aggregate on its head and win the match 4-2.
Bitterne RBL turned the tables on hosts Shirley Cons, as they beat them 5-1. Bitterne's Paul Tavender and Paul Lawrence got their team off to a flyer as they overcame Malcolm Willis and Ian Hine respectively. Shirley's Mike Thatcher pulled one back for his team, but Mark Stansmore and Steve Boterhoek finished proceedings by beating Mark Emm and Keith Castles for a superb result.
Curdridge RBL had a superb 4-2 win over visitors Sarisbury Social, thanks to wins from Rob Smith, Derek Fry and Brian Bull, against Dave Leeworthy (44 break), John Oldfield and Norman Bradfield respectively. Sarisbury's victors were Geoff Knapp verses Nick Alford and Stan Pitts over Clive Gamblin.
Chandlers Ford Central gave current champions Hamble Social a sober lesson before Christmas, as they won 5-1. Chandler's winners were Daniel Zagaroli (36 and 49 breaks) against Tony Spridgeon, Dave Wells (guest appearing from his home in Wales!) verses Rob Shattock, Tony Hannam against Steve Cottrell and Ray Smith over Will Mildenhall. Hamble's win came from a relieved Paul Knights against Chandler's captain Terry Azor (37 break).

SHIRLEY'S DOUBLE HEADER VICTORY TAKES THEM INTO SECOND PLACE
2013-2014 Billiards League – Week 10 – 4 December 2013
Shirley Cons double header with Chandlers Ford Central (one match a rearranged one cancelled by Chandlers Ford at the start of the season) saw them rise meteorically from second from bottom in the table to second from top in the Southampton Billiards League, with 5-1 and 4-2 victories.
The first duel had winners for Shirley; Malcolm Willis (31 break), Ian Hine, Mike Thatcher and Mark Emm beating Daniel Zagaroli (41 break), Terry Azor, Wayne Muddiman and Ray Smith respectively. Chandlers Ford Central's Tony Hannam got his team's consolation point.
The second match, played the next evening, had Chandlers fight back somewhat, with 'billiards impresario' John Mullane making breaks of 71, 74 and 42 during his win over Shirley's Sid Hunt – although as Mullane said to Hunt, "you could have quite as easily won that with a few more chances".
Shirley's Mark Emm got the better of Daniel Zagaroli, Chandler's Terry Azor responded by making runs of 57, 37, 35 and 32 in beating Mike Thatcher, but Malcolm Willis levelled the match by overcoming Wayne Muddiman. It was left to Keith Castles to beat Tony Hannam and win the match for Shirley Cons.
Totton Rec beat visiting Curdridge RBL 4-2, with Josh Barnes, Mike Kunzi and Brian Cannons getting them off to a great start by overcoming Clive Gamblin by only 1 point, Derek Fry by only 2 points and Brian Bull by 21 points respectively.
Curdridge's Nick Alford was decisive in the total team aggregate stakes, as he beat Steve Allen by 88 points. This gave Curdridge the aggregate point, despite Totton's Tony Aldrige beating Gwen Gamblin in the last pairing!
Churchill's Eastleigh visited the fortress that is Sarisbury Social, and left with the same feeling the England Cricket team are feeling at the moment, with the Sarisbury team cruising to a 5-1 victory.
Sarisbury's Dave Leeworthy (30 break), Norman Bradfield, Dennis Hushley (36 and 35) and Geoff Knapp overcame Peter Green, Paul Adams (37 break), Derek Foster (37 and 36) and Mark Adams respectively. The bright light in the Eastleigh camp was Dave Baker, who beat in-form John Oldfield (36 break).

WE'RE AT THE END OF THE FIRST THIRD, AND IT'S FAIRLY CLOSE!... HAMBLE SOCIAL WIN BY THE SLENDEREST OF MARGINS
2013-2014 Billiards League - Week 9 - 27 November 2013
Current Southampton Billiards League champions Hamble Social, won the total team aggregate by a mere three points, as they pipped visitors Sarisbury Social by four games to two, but it could have just as easily been a win for Sarisbury.
Sarisbury's Geoff Knapp played very well against Nick Wood and Norman Bradfield made two breaks of 33 to overcome Paul Knights to lead 2-0. Hamble's Steve Cottrell found good form, as he made breaks of 32 and 30 during his impressive win over Dave Leeworthy to pull one back for the champions.
Rob Shattock then pipped Stan Pitts by 10 points to set up a last game decider between Sarisbury's captain John Oldfield and 'new recruit' Mark Shirley. The game didn't disappoint, as Oldfield made runs of 33, 34 and 42 to close in on a team victory. However Shirley conjured up his old Pot Black snooker club days determination to beat his opponent by 200-196, to take the aggregate point 829-826, and the match 4-2!
Hythe Social had a fine 5-1 victory over visitors Shirley Social. Winners for Hythe were Tony Scarborough, Rob Tennant (31 break), Brian Price and Wayne Chiverton (30 break), against Ian Hine, Mike Thatcher, Malcolm Willis and Side Hunt, but only by 3 points! Shirley's 'lone ranger' was Keith Castles, who pipped Mick Curtis 200-198.
Totton returned to the top-of-the-table after they beat Bitterne RBL 4-2. Winners for Totton were Josh Barnes, Mike Kunzi and Brain Cannons, verses Paul Tavender, Steve Boterhoek and Chris Pullen respectively. Bitterne replied with wins for Paul Lawrence against Tony Aldridge and Chris Christodoulou verses Steve Allen (59 break).
Curdridge RBL visited Churchills Eastleigh and left with a superb 4-2 win. Winners for Curdridge were Gwen Gamblin, Clive Gamblin and Nick Alford against Dave Baker, Derek Foster and Paul Adams (38 and 30 breaks) respectively.
Churchill's Peter Green had a fine 3-point win against Brian Bull, and the "needle" match between two old friends who have known each other for 30 years, Churchill's Mike Henstredge and Derek Fry, went the way of the Churchill's man, after a nip-and-tuck battle. I'm sure Derek will find a way to return the favour out at Curdridge!

BITTERNE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION
WIN TWO IN A ROW
2013-2014 Billiards League - Week 8 - 20 November 2013
Bitterne Royal British Legion had only their second win of the season in the Southampton Billiards League, but boy was it a good one, as they overcame last years runners-up Churchills Eastleigh by 4 games to 2.
It could have been all so different however, as Churchills Mark Adams, deputising for his brother Paul, who was enjoying himself with his wife in Madrid, Spain, played well to beat Bitterne's Chris Christodoulou!
Bitterne's Steve Boterhoek then levelled, as he overcame Dave Baker. Mark Stansmore made it 2-1 for the Legion, as he beat Peter Green, but Churchill's Mike Henstredge had a superb win against Paul Tavender to level the match.
This left the last pairing of Bitterne's veteran Chris Pullen against in-form Derek Foster. Pullen rolled back the years to make the highest break of the evening - a fine 40 to go with an 18 - to overwhelm his luckless opponent to win the match and the team aggregate point 927-777.
Sarisbury Social had a wonderful 5-1 victory over in-form Shirley Cons. Winners for Sarisbury were; Dave Leeworthy (36 break) against Malcolm Willis, Norman Bradfield verses Ian Hinds, Stan Pitts over Mike Thatcher and John Oldfield (54 and 30 breaks) against Keith Castles.
Result of the week went to current champions Hamble Social as they whitewashed the previous weeks leaders Totton Rec 6-0!
Winners for Hamble were; Steve Cottrell, Will Mildenhall, Mark Shirley (35 break), Nick Wood and Tony Spridgeon, against Steve Allen (31 break), Mike Kunzi, Josh Barnes, Matt Osbourne and Brian Cannons respectively.
Chandlers Ford Central leapt to the top-of-the-table after their 5-1 victory over visitors Hythe Social. Chandler's Ray Smith got his team off to a great start by overcoming Hythe's number one Wayne Crotty. This was quickly followed by Terry Azor making breaks of 42, 34 and 33 during his win against Hythe's Rob Tennant.
Chandler's new recruit Austen Petty is picking up the fine game of billiards now, and added another scalp to his resume, this time it was Canadian import Mick Curtis. And Chandler's Wayne Muddiman beat Tony Scarborough to put his team 4-0 ahead.
However in the last pairing, Hythe's Wayne Chiverton kept his nerve against Daniel Zagaroli, who made runs of 52, 41 and 39, to win his teams consolation game.

2103-2014 Billiards League – Week 7 – 13 November 2013
Top boys Totton Rec held their nerve against second placed Churchills Eastleigh in the Southampton Billiards League for a surprising 4-2 victory, or as captain Steve Allen said, "where did that come from? I thought that was heading for a 3-3 draw".
The match started with Totton's Tony Aldridge and Churchill's Derek Foster struggling to find their rhythm in the first half of the match. Churchill's normally warm snooker room coming under the influence of November's dropping temperatures – or is that we just need to bleed the radiator in the corner next to table one! Aldridge found some of his trademark all-round cannons to put him within sight of the winning line, but Foster raised his game with a 39 break and won by 27 points.
In the second pairing, Mike Kunzi raced away against Dave Baker, but the Churchill's man turned the game on its head with a timely 20+ break to win by 39. So justifiably Totton could feel aggrieved that they were 2-0 behind...
This spurred them on, with captain Steve Allen making a 44 break in pipping Mike Henstredge by 12, when it looked as if Henstredge would run out the winner. Churchill's Paul Adams kept Totton's Josh Barnes away from the table with breaks of 55, 47 and 30 and got to within 20 points at the 140 mark. This however gave the demon potter hope as he made a break of 18 to pull away and win by 13.
Totton's Brian Cannons played well to subdue Peter Green, to win by 57 and take the overall team aggregate point by 16, 934-918, for a superb victory!
Bitterne RBL had a wonderful 5-1 first victory of the season away at Curdridge RBL, with Chris Pullen, Paul Tavender, Paul Lawrence and Steve Boterhoek all winning for Bitterne, against Clive Gamblin, Brian Bull, Nick Alford and Gwen Gamblin respectively. Curdridge's 'saving grace' was Derek Fry, who beat Chris Chiristodoulou, but by only 3 points!
Daniel Zagaroli increased his own league season high break with a fine 99 to go with a 37, 39, and 43 against Sarisbury's Norman Bradfield during his team's 4-2 win.
Other winners for Chandlers were, Austin Petty against Stan Pitts and Wayne Muddiman (39 and 38 breaks) verses Geoff Knapp. Sarisbury won their games thanks to John Oldfield (38 and 36 breaks) overcoming Tony Hannam and Dave Leeworthy beating Terry Azor, who made runs of 36, 36, 37 and 43, but sadly to no avail.
Current champions Hamble Social had a fine 3-3 draw at the seemingly impregnable fortress of Shirley Cons lovely billiards room. Hamble's Paul Knights beat Malcolm Willis and Nick Wood made a fine half-century during his win against Keith Castles for a 2-0 lead.
Shirley's Mike Thatcher and Adrian Bridger fought back with wins against Will Mildenhall and Rob Shattock, to set up a last pairing of Sid Hunt and Steve Cottrell. Shirley's Hunt overcame his opponent, but Cottrell scored enough points to win the aggregate for his team by 910-897.

WOOLSTON CONS' MOVE TO SHIRLEY CONS HAS DONE THEM WONDERS…
AS THEY BEAT CHURCHILLS EASTLEIGH 4-2
2013-2014 Billiards League – Week 6 – 6 NOVEMBER 2013
Shirley Cons, formerly Woolston Cons, had a superb 4-2 victory over visitors Churchills Eastleigh in the Southampton and District Billiards League
Shirley’s Mike Thatcher started proceedings with a nail biting 7 points win over Simon Green – and that was after Green had looked the more likely victor. Churchill’s Derek Foster (30 and 31 breaks) played well against Ian Hine to level the match, and Shirley’s Mark Emm showed some of his old Bitterne Park days skill by overcoming in-form Peter Green
Shirley’s Malcolm Willis found his in-off range to pull clear of Paul Adams during the third quarter of the match, leaving himself requiring only 10 points for the game. But how those last few points can be so hard to convert nearly proved the point, as Adams scored 110 points (including two 46 breaks) to Willis’s 5 points. Willis regained his composure however to run out a worthy winner
In the last pairing, Churchill’s Dave Baker was in no mood to lose his first game back after a Mediterranean cruise, and so delivered, with a win against Shirley’s captain Sid Hunt
Curdridge RBL visited champions Hamble Social and left 4-2 winners. Winners for Curdridge were Derek Fry, Brian Bull and Clive Gamblin against Nick Wood (43 and 30 break), Tony Spridgeon and Marc Shirley respectively.
Hamble’s Will Mildenhall and Rob Shattock bounced back from losses the previous week by overcoming Gwen Gamblin and Nick Alford
Bitterne RBL took the overall team aggregate score point by 877-836 to draw 3-3 with visitors Chandlers Ford Central, and that was after winning only two games
Daniel Zagaroli got his Chandler’s team off to a good start by overcoming Paul Tavender, and Wayne Muddiman (2 x 38 breaks) beat Paul Lawrence for a 2-0 lead. Austin Petty won his second game out of three by beating Bitterne’s Chris Pullen.
This seemed to spur Bitterne on, as they won the last two pairings of the evening. Steve Boterhoek overcame Ray Smith, and Mark Stansmore was decisive in the aggregate stakes by beating Terry Azor
Hythe had a fine 4-2 win over Sarisbury Social with Hythe's Rob Tennant, Wayne Chiverton and Brian Price beating Stan Pitts, Norman Bradfield and Dave Leeworthy respectively. Winners for Sarisbury were John Oldfield (47 break) and Geoff Knapp against Wayne Crotty (40 break) and Mick Curtis

SARISBURY SOCIAL'S SUPERB WIN OVER BITTERNE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION
2013-2014 Billiards League – Week 5 – 30 October 2013
Sarisbury Social rolled back the years in the Southampton Billiards league with a wonderful
6-0 win over visitors Bitterne RBL.
Sarisbury's Norman Bradfield got his team off to a flying start with a 36 break during his win over Mark Stansmore, and teammate Dave Leeworthy overcame Chris Christodoulou to lead 2-0.
Geoff Knapp was in no mood to be the odd one out as he beat Paul Lawrence with a 36 break, and Stan Pitts was victorious against Steve Boterhoek for an unassailable lead. Sarisbury's captain John Oldfield finished things off with a 41 break during his win over Chris Pullen for a great win.
Chandlers Ford Central handed out Totton Rec's first defeat of the campaign, with Wayne Muddiman and Terry Azor winning the first two games, against Mike Kunzi and Tony Aldridge respectively. Azor made runs of 45, 36 and 32 and Tony Aldridge made a fine 49.
Totton's Josh Barnes got the better of Daniel Zagaroli, and that was after Daniel had made 38 and 32, to give his team some hope. But Chandler's Ray Smith beat Matt Osbourne to set up a first win for Chandlers Ford's new youngster Austin Petty, against previously unbeaten Steve Allen in the last pairing.
Curdridge RBL welcomed Hythe Social and finished 4-2 winners. Curdridge's Brian Bull beat Wayne Chiverton, but Brian Price leveled for Hythe by overcoming Clive Gamblin. Gwen Gamblin carried on her good form by beating Hythe's Mick Curtis, and Derek Fry re-found his past form with a win over Rob Tennant. Hythe's captain Wayne Crotty was in no mood to see his team lose 5-1, as he beat Nick Alford, thanks in part to breaks of 31, 49 and 44.
Churchills Eastleigh had back-to-back wins as they overcame visitors Hamble Social, but it could have quite easily gone the other way!
Churchill's Derek Foster pipped Will Mildenhall 200-195, after Will had made a fine 30 break, and Peter Green played well in the first half of the game to beat Hamble's Paul Knights, who came back strongly in the second half.
Churchill's Paul Adams made breaks of 35 and 31 during his win against Steve Cottrell but Hamble's Nick Wood played well, making breaks of 31 and 34, to beat an improving Mike Henstredge to set up the last pairing of Mark Adams and Rob Shattock.
The tension was unbearable as the match ebbed and flowed, and as the game moved into the last 20 points, both players could have won! Churchill's Adams potted a fine white ball into a middle pocket, when his yellow cue-ball was close to the baulk cushion, then played a safety shot (a shot not played enough in my mind!) to leave him requiring 3 points. Shattock was unfortunate not to be able to score with himself on 198, and Adams was left with an 'unmissable' pot red over a middle pocket for a dream win!

CHURCHILLS 'HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS' IN A 6-0 WIN AGAINST VISITORS CHANDLERS FORD
2013-2014 Billiards League – Week 4 – 23 October 2013
In the Southampton Billiards league, on a night where Churchills Eastleigh was taken over for a packed 'quiz night', leaving car parking a nightmare for both billiard teams! Churchills took the honours with a stunning 6-0 victory.
The match started with Churchills Sid Reid battling with improving Ray Smith, with Reid pipping the Chandlers man by only four points, as Smith looked as if he would cross the line first in the home straight.
Churchill's Derek Foster built up a sizeable lead against Daniel Zagaroli, even with the handicap advantage. He made a break of 34 to set himself up for the third quarter of the match, but Zagaroli had other ideas. He made a fine 62 – missing a trademark pot red into a middle pocket off the middle spot, with a century beckoning, and two runs of 29. Foster however, responded magnificently by closing out the game for a relieved win.
Churchills Mark Mclean played against Wayne Muddiman, and the battle of the potting maestros did not disappoint, with Mclean winning. Peter Green faced another vetran in the shape of Tony Hannam, and the game see-sawed between both players in the early stages. Green however compiled a 32 break to help him win by 7 points.
In the last pairing Chandler's Terry Azor led Paul Adams by nearly 100 points. But Adams made breaks of 54, 34 and 32 to claw his way back and beat his Hampshire County Cup team mate by 28, after Azor had made a 36 in the closing exchanges.
Woolston Cons had a fine 5-1 win at Curdridge, with Mike Thatcher, Keith Castles and Sid Hunt winning the first three games for Woolston. Gwen Gamblin pulled one back for Curdridge as she beat Ian Hine, but Woolston's Malcolm Willis sealed the victory by overcoming Derek Fry.
Totton Rec carried on with their winning ways as they overcame visitors Sarisbury Social. Totton's Mike Kunzi made breaks of 39 and 33 in beating Dave Leeworthy, and Sarisbury's Norman Bradfield made a 35 during his win over Brian Cannons.
Other winners for Totton were Josh Barnes against Stan Pitts and Steve Allen verses Geoff Knapp. Sarisbury's John Oldfield beat Tony Aldridge in the last pairing.

CHANDLERS FORD BEAT VISITING CURDRIDGE RBL
2013-2014 Billiards League – Week 3 – 16 October 2013
Chandlers Ford Central welcomed Curdridge RBL in the Southampton Billiards League, and needed the last game to achieve a 4-2 victory.
Chandler's Daniel Zagaroli made a fine 81 break to go with a 51 during his win over Brian Bull, and captain Terry Azor was consistent, as he made runs of 55, 50, 42 and 37 in beating Derek Fry.
Curdridge's husband and wife partnership gave their team hope with fine wins over Wayne Muddiman and new player Austin Petty, which set up the last game decider. Chandler’s relative newcomer Ray Smith handled the pressure well, as he beat experienced Nick Alford for a fine team victory.
Champions Hamble Social beat visitors Bitterne RBL 5-1, with Hamble's Nick Wood (37 and 38 break), Steve Cottrell, Tony Spridgeon, and Paul Knights winning the first four pairings against Bitterne's Paul Tavender, Paul Lawrence, Steve Boterhoek and Mark Stansmore respectively.
Bitterne's Chris Christodoulou prevented the whitewash by overcoming Mark Shirley in the last game.
Hythe Social bounced back from a 6-0 whitewash the previous week by beating visitors Churchills Eastleigh 4-2. Hythe's new player Mick Curtis – who lived and played snooker in Canada for some years – beat Derek Foster, but Churchill's Paul Adams, who made breaks of 30, 33 and 31, fought back from being a long way behind Brian Price, to pip the veteran by 10 points on the newly clothed, lovely paced, first table in the room.
Hythe's Wayne Chiverton pipped Dave Baker by 3 points, but Churchill's Peter Green beat Wayne Crotty to set up another last game decider.
Warren Renyard showed off his improving billiards knowledge by beating a determined Mike Henstredge for a great team victory.
Totton Rec continued their winning ways by beating hosts Woolston Cons 4-2. Totton's mike Kunzi made breaks of 35 and 40 in beating Mike Thatcher, and was ably supported by winners Tony Aldridge and captain Steve Allen. Winners for Woolston were Keith Castles and Mark Emm, but narrowly losing the aggregate point 941-954.

TOTTON REC BEAT HYTHE SOCIAL 6-0, BUT IT COULD HAVE BEEN SO DIFFERENT...
2013-2014 Billiards League – Week 2 – 9 October 2013
This week I have a report from Totton Rec's captain Steve Allen to explain his team's exciting match with neighbours Hythe Social – I'll be out of a job soon!
Words from Steve Allen below:
Another close one for Hythe, but not reflected in the final score.
First off Josh & new boy Mike. Josh made good progress in reducing his deficit with a few of this trade mark shots, three times round the table flukes, Mike did keep the advantage though with some good billiards shots, obviously not a complete novice of the game. With the scores almost level Josh made a timely 20 to leave 1 point required, next shot game over.
On the other table Mike & Wayne battled to end, but it was Wayne who looked in the better form keeping Mike behind by the 85 start for a long period. Mike gradually finding a bit of rhythm whilst Wayne had a dry patch. It still looked like Wayne would run out winner, being in the final straight with Mike needing 50ish, Mike made a good 29 break but with Wayne only requiring 4 point it looked futile, sometimes those last few point can prove the hardest and so it proved.
Next up Brian & Wayne, Wayne flew of the blocks eating into the large handicap, compiling break after break in the 20's with Brian only picking up a few scraps. With the balls seemingly running Wayne's way it looked all over, catching Brian up with the scores at 175, strange things happen and so it proved again, with Brian making some excellent little breaks, whilst Wayne missed a few unexpected shots. Well done Brian for hanging on for an excellent win.
4th up Steve & Tony, this one looked like a typical start of the season match, neither playing really in the grove. so the scores just ticked along with Tony looking favorite as Steve wasn't making the inroads into the point deficit. Not much improved with the balls running awkward most of the time, but Steve gradually made progress with a couple of breaks which could have been better if the arm was flowing, it eventually got to the home stretch with Steve falling over the line.
Up last the two old billiards campaigners, Tony V Brian, didn't see too much of the game, what i did see, it looked like both players were cueing well. Tony missing some of his customary round the table cannons by a fag paper. This one again going down to the wire, but it was Totton's night they weren't going to be denied the 6-0.
Bad luck Hythe, i'm sure we may endure the same fate very soon, with the handicaps changing weekly, well we're hear at the top to be shot at.
Good luck!!
Steve Allen
Another close match transpired between hosts Bitterne RBL and Woolston Cons. Bitterne lost three games by 10 points, 9 points and 2 points to end up losing 5-1. Bitterne's Paul Lawrence was Bitterne's winner in the third game of the evening – beating Mike Thatcher by only 10 points
Curdridge RBL visited Sarisbury Social and had a fine 4-2 victory. Norman Bradfield and Dave Leeworthy started Sarisbury's match well by beating Rob Smith and Derek Fry, but Gwen Gamblin replied for Curdridge by overcoming Dennis Hushley. Husband Clive Gamblin then beat Sarisbury's Geoff Knapp, and finally Curdridge's Nick Alford overcame Sarisbury's captain John Oldfield

CHAMPIONS HAMBLE AND HYTHE'S MATCH GOES TO THE WIRE!
2013-2014 Billiards League – Week 1 – 2 October 2013
The 78th Southampton and District Billiard League Championship season cued-off in earnest with 9 teams competing for the prestigious shield.
Current champions Hamble Social visited last years third placed team Hythe Social and witnessed a nail biting team aggregate points total going down to the last pairing.
Hamble's Will Mildenhall gave his team the lead by beating Hythe's new player Mick Curtis but experienced Brian Price levelled by overcoming Hamble's number one Nick Wood. Tony Scarborough turned the tie in Hythe's favour by beating Steve Cottrell but Hamble's Tony Spridgeon made a 33 break in beating Hythe's Wayne Crotty to square the match.
The last pairing had Hythe's Wayne Chiverton up against Hamble's Paul Knights. Chiverton was determined to give his side three games but Knights scored enough points to give his side the aggregate point by the closest of margins 881-880, to draw the match 3-3!
Totton Rec had a fine 5-1 win out at Curdridge RBL with Josh Barnes beating Curdridge's Rob Smith and Hythe's Mike Kunzi overcoming Derek Fry in the first two pairings. Curdridge's Clive Gamblin made a fine 40 break during his win over Brian Cannons but Totton's Tony Aldridge responded by making a 35 break in his win against Brian Bull.
The last pairing had Totton's captain Steve Allen making a 43 break during his win over Curdridge’s captain Gwen Gamblin for the team victory.
Last season's runner-up Churchills Eastleigh welcomed Sarisbury Social and overcame the veteran side 4-2.
Sarisbury's Dave Leeworthy played consistently to beat Dave Baker by a narrow 10 points but Churchill's Derek Foster played some fine controlled billiards to beat Stan Pitts, making a 31 and 48 in the process. Churchill's Mark Adams played well to beat Geoff Knapp and brother Paul Adams made breaks of 33, 57 and 39 (with a fair share of 'luck'!) to overcome Norman Bradfield.
Churchill's Peter Green looked as if he would give his team a 5-1 victory after a fine 36 break, but Sarisbury’s captain and number one replied with a 43 to win by 23 points.
Chandlers Ford Central postponed their match with Woolston Cons and will play the fixture within one month on a Thursday night.
