Hamble Social win Southampton Billiards league championship for the third time
2018-2019 Billiards League – Week 21 of 21 – April 6 2019
Hamble Social have won the prestigious Southampton Billiards league championship after they were held to a 3-3 draw at Churchills Eastleigh.
Hamble required one point to win the title from the previous week’s results for the third time in their history and not since 2013. Their captain Will Mildenhall duly served up the point required by comprehensively beating Churchill’s Peter Green 200-138, making a 30 break in the process.
Churchills Paul Adams played well to overturn Hamble's handicap advantage and lead Nick Wood by nearly 100, thanks to breaks of 44, 42 and 41. But Wood gradually clawed his way back, and with Adams requiring only 17 points to win, managed to create a superb 74 unfinished to steal the game 200-183.
Churchill’s Derek Foster then played well to beat Hamble’s Tony Spridgeon by 200-130, thanks in part to runs of 34 and 52. Churchill’s Mark McLean was in control against Hamble’s Paul Knights, but Knights clawed his way back and pipped McLean by a nail-biting 200-193.
With the total team points aggregate score balanced at 714 to 730 in Hamble’s favour, it was down to the last pairing. Churchill’s Mike Henstredge played superbly to beat Mark Spridgeon by 200-143 to take the aggregate by 914 to 873 and the 3-3 draw. But it was Hamble's night for celebration and well done to their whole team.
Curdridge RBL claimed runners-up spot, four points behind Hamble, after they thrashed visiting Chandlers Ford Central 5-1, condemning the 2017 champions to bottom place. Winning for Curdridge were Derek Fry over Dean Turner 200-158, Nick Alford against Daniel Zagaroli (77 and 59 breaks) 200-142, Richard Marshall over Korbin Lowe 200-154 and Brian Bull against Terry Azor (63 and 63 breaks) 200-128. Chandler’s win came in the second pairing with 'retiring' Graham Hollick beating Rob Smith 200-176.
Totton Rec ended up in third place after they were pegged back by home side Park Gate RBL to draw 3-3. Winning the first two games were Totton’s Tony Aldridge (34 unfinished) 200-125 against Paul Tavender and Mike Thatcher pipping Paul Lawrence (34 break) by 200-195.
Park Gate fought back with Chris Pullen overcoming Keith Castles 200-167, but Totton’s Brian Cannons made it 3-1 to Totton after he beat Ian Finch 200-143. At that point, Totton led the aggregate total by 767 to 663, and looked nailed on for the victory. But Park Gate’s Steve Boterhoek had other ideas, as he beat Mick Kunzi by 200-47 to win and take the aggregate by 863 to 814.
Last season’s champions St Denys Cons came in fourth place after they were beaten 4-2 at Sarisbury Social. Winning for Sarisbury were Geoff Knapp over Derek King 200-154, John Oldfield against Chris Bishop 200-183 and Chris Collinson over Mark Emm 200-153. St Denys’ victors were Malcolm Willis against Norman Bradfield 200-176 and Andy Carter over Kas Remzi 200-126, just falling to win the team aggregate points total by only 12 points, 890 to 902!
The highest break of the season was a wonderful 166 unfinished made by Chandlers Ford Central's John Mullane against Sarisbury Social's Geoff Knapp in week six.

The first was a 5-1 victory. Hamble’s Will Mildenhall made a fine 42 break during his decisive 200-67 victory over Andy Carter, but St Denys’ Chris Bishop levelled, helped by runs of 53 and 30, by beating Mark Spridgeon 200-128.

In the lower half of the table there is a battle to stay off the bottom position with four clubs within three points of each other!
Park Gate RBL moved out of the immediate danger zone after they beat host club Sarisbury Social 4-2. Winning for Park Gate were Chris Christodoulou against Geoff Knapp 200-182, Chris Pullen over Norman Bradfield 200-121 and Ian Finch, making a fine 45 break, against Kas Remzi 200-135.
Sandwiched in-between those wins were victories for Sarisbury’s Chris Collinson 200-182 against Steve Boterhoek, and Sarisbury’s John Oldfield against Paul Lawrence 200-102.
The battle at the bottom between Churchill’s Eastleigh and Chandlers Ford Central turned out to be a humdinger of a contest, which witnessed a century break and a nail-biting 6 point win on the aggregate points total!
Churchills Derek Foster beat Graham Hollick 200-168, but Chandlers Ford’s Korbin Lowe (41 break) overcame Simon Green 200-186. Chandlers Ford’s Dean Turner overcame Peter Green 200-174 and Daniel Zagaroli beat Paul Adams 200-120, making 30, 37, 54 and a superb 105. 5-1, and with only three points separating the top four places the league title will go down to the wire!
Cons started well with Andy Carter beating Brian Cannons 200-181, and that quickly became 2-0 as Malcolm Willis overcame Totton’s Mike Thatcher 200-128. Churchills shock leaders Curdridge RBL and Zagaroli's break building masterclass
2018-2019 Billiards League – Week 17 of 21 – March 2 2019
The Southampton Billiards league witnessed some fine highlights this week with Churchills Eastleigh shocking leaders Curdridge RBL, and Chandlers Ford’s Daniel Zagaroli in stunning break-building form, despite his team losing to current champions St Denys Cons.
Churchills Eastleigh welcomed Curdridge RBL with no victories against the leaders for a number of seasons. The Eastleigh team started well, with Churchill’s Derek Foster (30 and 32 breaks) claiming a remarkable comeback win by only two points against Richard Marshall, with the Curdridge player leading right up to the end. Curdridge’s Clive Gamblin levelled the match by playing well against Simon Green 200-149.
Churchill’s Mike Henstredge then played his game of the season by beating in-form Brian Bull 200-115, and that was followed by rapidly improving Churchillian Mark McLean’s (32 break) 200-146 victory over Rob Smith. Curdridge responded well with Derek Fry beating Peter Green by 200-145, but Churchills had won the total team aggregate point by 40 points 894 to 859 for a welcome win.
Totton Rec took advantage of Curdridge’s slip-up by beating Sarisbury Social 4-2 to move onto the same number of points as Curdridge at the top. Winning for Totton were Brian Cannons over Geoff Knapp 200-142 in the first game, but Sarisbury bounced back with Norman Bradfield overcoming Mick Kunzi 200-143.
Totton’s Mike Thatcher then beat Chris Collinson 200-180, but Sarisbury levelled again with Steve Gardiner victorious over Tony Aldridge 200-176. Going into the final game, Sarisbury held a three point lead on the aggregate points total. Sarisbury’s John Oldfield played Totton’s John Ransom, and with the scores at 188-185, Ransom kept his cool and slotted in an unfinished 14 break to win the match!
Current champions St Denys Cons showed their intent on not giving up their crown without a fight, by despatching visiting Chandlers Ford Central 5-1. Cons’ Malcolm Willis cued things off nicely by beating Terry Azor (68, 43, 49 breaks) by a significant 200-56. But that was a prelude to the next pairing, as Chandlers’ Daniel Zagaroli showed blistering scoring power with breaks of 48, 36, 63, 41, and a wonderful 91 unfinished to mesmerise Derek King by 200-159.
But the next three games went St Denys way, with Cons' Andy Carter beating Korbin Lowe 200-96, Chris Bishop (37, 40 breaks) overcoming Graham Hollick by a nail-biting 200-199, and Mark Emm beating Dean Turner 200-175.

Third 5 point victory in a row for the Totton side. Mike Thatcher, despite finding himself 62 points behind after 15 minutes of play, turned his game around to win by 11. Terry Azor levelled the match with a determined performance, albeit a somewhat lengthy game, to win by 29. Both Steve Allen and Mick Kunzi scored 30+ breaks to put Totton 3 - 1 up and a slight aggregate advantage, but in the final pairing of the evening veteran Tony Aldridge matched Danny Zagaroli blow for blow, and although there were no substantial breaks, Tony got to the required 200 before Danny could wipe off his handicap deficit.

First Pairing was Knights Vs Collinson
Knights played some nice billiards shots throughout the entire game Collinson not have the run struggled to make any headway , One last ditch effort at the end of the match with Knights requiring 1 point Collinson knocked in a 36 but not enough as Knights gets over the line .
Second Pairing M Spridgeon Vs Remzi
A very close game know one really taking full control both had chance in the final few moment of the match to Win But spridgeon falls over the lie 6 points the difference 2 -0 Hamble Looking good.
Our next Pairing Was Mildenhal vs the old master Knapp
With the handicap advantage Mildenhal took the control in the opening part of the game and forged a gap , but the was no denying the experience of Knapp's game as he started to show some form and reduced the gap passed Mildenhal and looked the true winner he is. 2- 1
Forth Pairing Wood Vs Bradfield
Another very close affair Wood slowly closed the gap after a very slow start from both , Middle part of the patch they both woke up and started to play some nice shots Wood looking to win when he got close to Bradfield but could pass him, Bradfield keep the lead to the end with another close Game to win by 5 points this time 2-2 could not be closer
Last and final Pairing Shattock Vs Oldfield
Going down to the wire Shattock with a 40 point advantage Played some nice billiards to keep Oldfield at arm length. Shattock needing only 1 point to win and give Hamble a 4 -2 victory surely it is there with Oldfield sat back on 169 victory must be Hambles , But no one last chance Oldfield knocks in a 32 to deny Shattock the win and Hamble the points Only 11 points in it overall

New Year celebrations start early with Mullane's magical 161 break signing off 2018 in style!
2018-2019 Billiards League – Week 11 of 21 – December 26 2018
The Southampton Billiards League went into its Christmas and New Year fixtures with only six points separating six league places. And the Christmas celebrations started early during the match between Hambke Socail and Chandlers Fiord Central...
League leaders Hamble Social welcomed Chandlers Ford Central and a fascinating match ensued. First up was the pairing of Mark Spridgeon and Chandlers Ford’s Korbin Lowe, with Lowe showing his billiards class by pulling away and winning comfortably by 200-167. On the other table, Hamble’s Tony Spridgeon took on Chandlers Ford's Terry Azor, and his 200 to minus 16 victory looked to have proved decisive in the race for the team aggregate total score point.
Next up were Hamble’s number one Nick Wood (37 break) and Chandlers Ford's Daniel Zagaroli (52 break). The game was a close affair, but Zagaroli showed his composure to make a 30 unfinished break to win the game. The fourth pairing was between Hamble’s Will Mildenhall and Chandlers Ford’s teenage newcomer Ricardo Drayton. Mildenhall’s experience and home-table advantage proved decisive in the end, as he won by 200-146. But Drayton shows promise and should be encouraged to play more.
The last pairing was a humdinger of a game, as Hamble’s Paul Knights battled against master billiards aficionado John Mullane. Knights took the advantage early on, but Mullane hit back with breaks of 50, 39 and 37 to close the point’s handicap gap. Knights then made a 30 break to leave himself on 178 and Mullane on -5.
Knights would not have been too presumptuous to think that he was in sight of a memorable victory. But Mullane had other thoughts, as he crafted a fantastic break of 161! But Mullane broke down, only five points short of his and the season's high so far of 166 unfinished, and with Knights eventually requiring only three for game, nerves came into play! Mullane showed his mettle though, winning by three, and from a near hopeless position, showed, at whatever level we play we should never give up hope!
When the excitement had died down, the team aggregate score showed Hamble on 921 and Chandlers Ford on 730 for a 3-3 match score.
Churchills Eastleigh welcomed highflying Park Gate RBL and had a wonderful Christmas present, as they beat them 5-1, and that was after having to play on an unfamiliar table due to light-key problems on their normal number one match table!
Churchill's Paul Adams cued-off, making breaks of 44 and 34 during his 200-182 victory over Chris Pullen. That was followed by a fine performance from Simon Green in overcoming Chris Christodoulou by 200-135. Churchill’s Mark McLean and Gate’s Paul Lawrence then had a fine tussle, with McLean edging over the line 200-195.
Churchill’s Peter Green sealed the games played win, thanks to his 200-141 triumph over Park Gate’s Ian Finch, and Derek Foster looked to secure Churchill’s first whitewash of the season as the prepared to play Steve Boterhoek. Park Gate’s Boterhoek had other ideas though, as he crept over the 200 point mark by 10, despite Foster making a 32 break in the last few minutes, leaving the aggregate score at 990-853.
Curdridge RBL visited Sarisbury Social and left with a fine 4-2 win. Curdridge’s Derek Fry beat Chris Collinson 200-150, but Sarisbury’s Geoff Knapp (33 break) overcame Gwen Gamblin 200-152. Then Sarisbury’s Norman Bradfield looked to have wrestled the advantage back by beating Clive Gamblin 200-159.
But Curdridge’s Brian Bull beat Sarisbury's John Oldfield 200-153, to leave the aggregate points total at 703 to Sarisbury and 711 to Curdridge. The last pairing went down to the wire, as Curdridge’s 'super-sub' Dave Fry pipped Sarisbury’s Kas Remzi 200-198, to win the aggregate point by only eight points 911-903 and the match.
Current champions St Denys Cons signed-off 2018 by beating visiting Totton Rec 4-2. But it could have been all so different, as Totton’s Mike Thatcher overcame Malcolm Willis by a substantial 200-139. Back roared St Denys with Derek King beating Mick Kunzi 200-123 to wrestle the aggregate advantage back.
Con’s Chris Bishop made a 34 and 37 during his 200-145 win over Brain Cannons and Con’s Mark Emm made it 3-1, as he overcame Tony Aldridge 200-154, by making a fine 30 unfinished break. In the last pairing, Totton’s Steve Allen made a 33 break during his 200-191 victory over Con’s Ade Bridger to make the score a respectable one.

In a re-arranged match from 24th Oct, Totton Rec won 4 - 2 and having spent the first half of the season in the bottom three, now jump into fourth place.
Chris Bishop started well with a 40 break but the spurred Mick Kunzi to produce a masterful performance and with breaks of 45 and 47 set the evening up with an aggregate advantage of some 122 points. Mark Emm knocked in a 31 and Derek King won by 62 to reduce this deficit. Totton’s Lee Fitzpatrick had other ideas, knocking in a 30 (10 hazards) break leaving Mike Thatcher a smaller target to secure the match. The final game of the evening did not see the players at their best form, but Thatcher eventually won by 14 points.

Curdridge, Park Gate and St Denys closing in on Hamble Social
2018-2019 Billiards League – Week 10 of 21 – December 15 2018
Park Gate Royal British Legion handed out only Hamble Social’s third loss of the season, as they won 4-2 in the Southampton Billiards league.
It started well for table-toppers Hamble, as Nick Wood made breaks of 34 and 31 to beat Paul Lawrence, who made a 35, by 200-131. Park Gate bounced back with Steve Boterhoek overcoming Mark Spridgeon by a decisive 200-84. But Hamble’s Paul Knights then played well to beat Ian Finch by 200-106, to leave the team total points aggregate at 437 to 484 in Hamble’s favour.
Park Gate’s Chris Christodoulou then overcame Will Mildenhall 200-148, leaving the aggregate at a tantalising 637 to 632 to Hamble! The last pairing did not disappoint in terms of aggregate thrills, as Paul Tavender beat Tony Spridgeon (35 break) by a close 200-191 to win the aggregate by only 14 points 837 to 823.
Curdridge RBL joined Park Gate in joint second place as they overcame visiting Churchills Eastleigh 5-1. Winners for Curdridge were Clive Gamblin, Richard Marshall and Brian Bull in the first three pairings against Mike Adams, Paul Adams (35 break) and Mike Henstredge respectively.
Churchill's Derek Foster then pipped Curdridge’s Derek Fry by making a 26 unfinished to win by only two points. But that was a false dawn as Curdridge’s Rob Smith beat Mark McLean in the last game for a deserved victory.
Current champions St Denys Cons joined Curdridge RBL and Park Gate RBL on 31 points after beating hosts Chandlers Ford Central 4-2. Winning for Chandlers in the first game was John Mullane (41, 56 and 79 breaks) against Andy Carter. Back came St Denys with Chris Bishop (41 and 40 breaks) overcoming Terry Azor (46 and 38 breaks) by a substantial 200-41.
Chandlers responded with Korbin Lowe (30 break) overcoming Derek King, but St Denys Ade Bridger made it 2-2 after beating Dean Turner. It was left to St Denys Con’s Malcolm Willis to overcome newcomer Ricardo Drayton to seal the victory.
Bottom team Sarisbury Social started well during their visit to Totton Rec, as they took the first two tables, thanks to Kas Remzi beating Lee Fitzpatrick and Norman Bradfield overcoming Brian Cannons. But the high soon turned to Christmas bah humbug as they lost the next three games – Mick Kunzi beating John Oldfield, Steve Allen (38, 55 and 34 breaks) having a blinder against Steve Gardiner, and rounding off the evening, Tony Aldridge overcoming Geoff Knapp.

It was left to Churchill’s Mark McLean to win his team the match by beating Kas Remzi 200-149, and the aggregate 970-832.
At Chandlers Ford Central, Totton’s Brian Cannons got his team off to the perfect start as he was decisive in beating Daniel Zagaroli 200-37. Chandlers Ford’s Terry Azor unleashed a barrage of breaks as he made 43, 49, 55 and a superb 99 to overcome Tony Aldridge 200-169. Back came Totton with ex-Chandlers Ford player Mike Thatcher beating Dean Turner 200-145 to put Totton in aggregate points command.
Chandlers Ford’s Ray Smith squared the match in terms of games played, by overcoming Steve Allen (34 break) 200-103, which left the match in the balance heading into the last pairing. The last game was a quiet affair with Totton’s Mick Kunzi finally getting the better of Korbin Lowe 200-179 to give his team the victory 872 to 761.
Hamble Social powered on at the top of the table as they beat visiting Curdridge RBL 4-2. Winning for Hamble were Nick Wood 200-196, Tony Spridgeon 200-141 and Will Mildenhall 200-177 against Clive Gamblin, Richard Marshall and Brian Bull respectively. Winning for Curdridge was a fine result for Gwen Gamblin against in-form Mark Spridgeon by only 9 points 200-191 and Derek Fry over Paul Knights 200-172.
St Denys Cons welcomed Park Gate RBL, who were on the same number of points in the league, and it ended all square 3-3 after the five games. Park Gate’s Paul Tavender beat Ade Bridger 200-196 and Chris Christodoulou overcame St Deny's Malcolm Willis 200-183 for 2-0.

Good win for Totton with Brian Cannons maintaining his 100% record (4 out of 4) but the highlight of the evening was surely Terry Azor with breaks of 43, 49, 55 and an impressive 99 to caw back a deficit of some 220 points and still win by 31. Mike Thatcher won by 55 to put Totton in the driving seat but Ray Smith beat Steve Allen(34 break) by 97 to bring the match level at 2 - 2. The final game of the evening proved to be a drawn out cliff-hanger. Neither player hitting their best form, chances going begging, but it was Mick Kunzi who finally got over the line with an 18unf.

Not so much a "game of two halves" but a game of those who did, and those who did not. Brian Cannons kept his unbeaten record thanks to an outrageous fluke to get over the line against Peter Green. Mick Kunzi knocked in a 30 break, but Mark McLean forged ahead during the final 20 minutes. Tony Aldridge never got into his stride versus Mike Henstredge and a concession of 85 points on handicap lead to a defeat of 86.
Steve Allen, with the help of a 40 break, caught up and went clear of Derek Foster where consistent play was the key.
Mike Thatcher took the final game of the evening v Simon Green, but the aggregate was just out of reach.

Words from Tony Aldridge –
Good away win for Totton Rec, striving to get off the bottom of the table.
The match started with Paul Lawrence conceding some 130 points on the handicap to Brian Cannons, but despite scoring a break of 38 Paul lost by 46. On the other table the first 15minutes belonged to Tony Aldridge, and leveled the scoreboard at 108 apiece. Chris potted well and it was nip-and-tuck through to the last street. Losing the opponents white was his undoing, the attempt at the double baulk failed presenting Tony with the easiest cannon.
Mick Kunzi, not enjoying the best start to the season, rolled in breaks of 33 and 31 to beat new-comer Cliff Robins, putting Totton 3 - 0 up.
Steve Botehoek potted steadily to get the better of an off form Mike Thatcher, leaving Lee Fitzpatrick to tidy up the affairs of the evening. Conceding precisely 80 points to Park Gate Captain Chris Pullen, Lee strove with determination to finish the job, but alas stopped on an agonising 198 to allow Pullen to get over the line.

Mullane's magical 166 unfinished break cools disappointment of not
qualifying for the English Amateur Billiards last 32
2018-2019 Billiards League – Week 6 of 21 – November 10 2018
Chandlers Ford Central’s John Mullane made up for his disappointment of not qualifying for the English Amateur Billiards Championship last 32 (pipped by teammate Terry Azor) by making a magnificent season high 166 unfinished break in his team’s 4-2 victory against Sarisbury Social.
He also made breaks of 40, 32 and 50 against a watching Geoff Knapp from Sarisbury. Chandler’s Daniel Zagaroli cued-off proceedings by beating Kas Remzi 200-129, making runs of 34, 67, 74 and 31. Sarisbury levelled with Chris Collinson (44 and 38 break) overcoming Korbin Lowe (31 and 47 break) 200-180. Chandler’s Dean Turner then beat John Oldfield 200-135 to make it 2-1. And after Mullane's masterclass made it 3-1, Sarisbury’s Norman Bradfield had the last input, as he overcame Graham Hollick 200-184, but lost the total team points aggregate 964-827.
Curdridge RBL visited Park Gate RBL and left with a commendable 3-3 draw to jump to the league summit. Gate’s Paul Lawrence beat Brian Bull 200-177, and that was followed by Steve Boterhoek overcoming Richard Marshall by a slender 200-192. Curdridge’s Rob Smith was decisive in beating Ian Finch 200-110, but Gate’s Chris Christodoulou overcame Clive Gamblin 200-145 for a 3-1 lead. Curdridge’s Derek Fry beat Chris Pullen 200-184 in the last pairing and won the aggregate point by only 20 points 914-894.
Current league champions St Denys Cons had a fine 5-1 victory over visiting Churchill’s Eastleigh. But it could have been all so different as Churchill’s Peter Green beat Chris Bishop (42 break) 200-158 in the first game. But it was all Cons after that, as Derek King played well to overcome Paul Adams 200-114, Andy Carter made a fantastic 60 break during his 220-176 win against Mike Henstredge, and Malcolm Willis overcame Mike Adams 200-155. It was left to Con’s Mark Emm to finish a fine display as he beat Derek Foster 200-110.
Last week’s bottom of the table Totton Rec turned the formbook on its head by beating leader’s Hamble Social 5-1. Winning for Totton were Brian Cannons against Mark Spridgeon by a decisive 200-119, Steve Allen (44 and 37 break) over Rob Shattock 200-186 and Tony Aldridge against Nick Wood 200-167. Hamble’s Tony Spridgeon made a fine 31 unfinished break to beat Mick Kunzi (33 break) 200-107, but Totton’s Mike Thatcher wrapped up the evening by overcoming Will Mildenhall 200-181.

Churchills beat Chandlers Ford with Adams making a 99 unfinished
2018-2019 Billiards League – Week 5 of 21 – November 3 2018
The Southampton Billiards league match between hosts Churchills Eastleigh and neighbours Chandlers Ford Central displayed some high quality play and break building of the highest class with Churchills winning 4-2 for only their second victory of the season.
The first pairing had Churchill’s Derek Foster against Ford’s Daniel Zagaroli. Zagaroli was in imperious form early on, as he racked up breaks of 77, 38, 48, 34 and 53 to close in on Foster’s handicap advantage. But Foster showed his mettle to make a fine and timely break of 40 near the 200-point mark to help pip his opponent by 200-181!
On the other table, Chandlers Ford’s captain Terry Azor, back from his recent last 32 foray at The World Billiards Championship in Leeds, carried on his fine form by making breaks of 41, 40, 50, 62, 32 and 34 to overcome Mark McLean 200-149.
Next up was Churchill’s Simon Green and Chandler’s newcomer Dean Turner. Both players played some fine shots with Green eventually triumphing by 200-171.
Churchill’s Paul Adams and Chandler’s Graham Hollick started slowly with nothing to show of what was about to transpire. At the 101-point mark, Adams then made a superb break of 99 unfinished, agonisingly running out of points available to complete a century break, to win by 200-125.
Chandlers Ford’s Korbin Lowe then held his nerve to pip Churchill’s Peter Green 200-193 in the last pairing, but Churchills won the team aggregate points total by 942-877.
Curdridge RBL welcomed Totton Rec and beat them 4-2. The first two games went Curdridge’s way with Brian Bull beating Mick Kunzi 200-103 and Clive Gamblin overcoming Mike Thatcher 200-166. Totton bounced back with Tony Aldridge beating Gwen Gamblin 200-140 and Steve Allen overcoming Derek Fry 200-160 to level at 2-2. Curdridge’s Rob Smith was decisive in beating Lee Fitzpatrick 200-97 to win the aggregate 900-766 and the match.
St Denys Cons visited Hamble Social but left 4-2 losers. It started well for St Denys as Derek King beat Tony Spridgeon 200-169. But Hamble levelled with Paul Knights overcoming Andy Carter (32 break) 200-184. Hamble’s Will Mildenhall proved decisive as he beat Con’s Chris Bishop 200-78, and Hamble’s Nick Wood overcame St Deny’s Willie Clarke 200-188 for a 3-1 lead. St Deny’s Malcolm Willis made a fine 43 break to claw his way back into seemingly lost game with Rob Shattock and win by 200-185!
Late result – Sarisbury Social lost 4-2 to visiting Park Gate RBL.

Up to play first for Hamble was Paul Knights v Andy Carter and Tony Spridgeon v Derek King . Knights got off to a flying start with an 18 off the break followed by some nice breaks to open a gap . Carter failed to get off the mark early on but found his rhythm and start to close the gap. Carter got within ten point of knights by the 140 mark , but knights did just enough to get over the line .
Tony V King Both played well King taken opportunities when left in , there seemed to be more straight liners than normal making play a bit broken King potting and general play saw him over the line although frustrated at times 1-1
Next Up for Hamble Nick Wood and Will Mildenhal
Nick Wood had a trial of a Game against Willie Clarke . Willie started off well taking the balls Wood left . Wood simply couldn't close the gap . Wood eventually found bit of form and closed the gap , only managed to pass Clarke in the 160 street . a nervous finish for wood who admitted it wasn't a game he wanted to remember but stumbled over the line all the same . 2-1
Will Mildenhal found a bit of form that he has been lacking for some time and played well against Chris bishop . Chris didnt seem to have many leaves but played some inspiring shots when given a chance . Mildenhal seemed to be playing his shots with a bit too much pace this might explain Bishops lack of chances when he got in. But all in all a good game for Mildenhal too win. 3-1
Last up Was Rob Shattock v Malc Willis . Shattock got of to a blinding start and played some shots only David Blain would attempt. Apparently getting the odd fluke. Willis could only sit and watch and laugh to himself . Being the professional Willis is . he never gave up with shattock requiring 15 to win and Willis back on 156 the game was all but over. But NO Willis came to the table last chance and put in a 43 to get within 1 point of victory and did so a few shots later , well deserved victory Malc well done . 3-2

shortage of players available (Chris Bishop playing in the England qualifying) Mark Emm had a bad back.
He sent me a text at 10.30 am but I did not see it til noon when Steve gave me a ring.
We did some practice at Totton and the sandwiches were very nice.

Azor's 122 unfinished break stuns Con's King
2018-2019 Billiards League – Week 3 of 21 – October 19 2018
In the Southampton Billiards League, Chandlers Fords Central’s captain Terry Azor looked down and out in his team’s match against current champions St Denys Cons. Con’s Derek King was nearing the 200-point winning mark, but Azor made a magical 122 unfinished break to pip King by 200-194. He also made breaks of 40, 42 and 52 to cap a fine performance.
St Deny’s Andy Carter, helped by a 34 break, levelled the match by beating current Stuart Hamper Individual Handicap Champion Korbin Lowe 200-118. And Con’s Chris Bishop made it 2-1 as he overcame Graham Hollick by a nail-biting two points 200-198. Chandler’s newcomer Dean Turner completed his three game league introduction by beating Ade Bridger 200-152. It was left to Con’s Malcolm Willis to make a 32 break to help in his victory over Daniel Zagaroli by an impressive 200 to minus 79, to take the team aggregate point by 946-637 and a 4-2 victory. But it was Azor’s evening – well done Terry!
Hamble Social welcomed Park Gate RBL and had a fine 5-1 victory. Hamble's Mark Spridgeon got his team off to a great start by beating Steve Boterhoek 200-176. Park Gate's solitary point came from Paul Lawrence making a 31 break during his win over Will Mildenhall by a slender 200-195. Hamble’s Paul Knights beat Chris Pullen 200-183 to start a three game winning run for Hamble. Next was Nick Wood who overcame Chris Christodoulou 200-130 and Rob Shattock finished the match in style by beating Ian Finch 200-153 for a 995 to 842 team aggregate points victory.
Sarisbury Social continued their fine form with a great 5-1 win over visiting Totton Rec. Totton’s Lee Fitzpatrick won the first game against a faltering Geoff Knapp by 200-194. But Sarisbury’s Norman Bradfield beat John Ransom 200-151, Kas Remzi overcame Totton’s Mike Thatcher 200-186, Sarisbury’s Steve Gardiner beat Steve Allen 200-178 and John Oldfield saved the best to last, as he made a fine 60 break to overpower Tony Aldridge 200-175.
Table toppers Curdridge RBL kept their 100% start to the season intact by visiting Churchills Eastleigh and beating them 4-2. It could have been all so different though, as Churchills won the first two games. Derek Foster beat Gwen Gamblin 200-184 and Simon Green played well to overcome Clive Gamblin by a nil-biting 200-194. But that was it for the Eastleigh outfit as Brian Bull beat Paul Adams 200-94, even though Adams made a 40 break, Rob Smith overcame Mike Henstredge 200-171 and Derek Fry beat Peter Green 200-159.

Hamble started off well with a fine game from Mark spridgeon . Although he never made any high breaks he scored nearly every time at the table . Second game Paul Lawrence dominated the play with some sublime pots and an all round good performance. Great to watch . Although Paul was in control most of the match Will Mildenhall kept within striking distance of the winning line , Both having chances to win but at the end Paul fell over the line well deserved victory Next up Was Paul Knights Vs Chris Pullen. Both players played a good game , Paul knights nearly Caught Chris Pullen for Chris to put in a 22 break and pull away again , Paul Knights slowly narrowed the gap then hit in a 28 to pull away with in 10 points of victory a few shots later and a bit of patience he got his chance and took it . Geoff Knapp seemed to falter around 180 giving Lee Fitzpatrick a chance to claw back a 70 point deficit. The final few points of the game were tense, but Lee's difficult direct cannon sealed the deal and he won by a mere 6 points.
Norman Bradfield produced a master-class of in-off and cannon play giving John Ransom little chance to get into his stride.
Remsi beat Thatcher in their head-to-head while Steve Gardner made good use of a 150 points handicap start over Totton's Steve Allen who just failed to catch him by a mere 22 points.
The final pairing of the evening put Oldfield against Aldridge and the two can recall playing one another over the years since 1968.
Aldridge got off to a quick start going 40 ahead in the first 10 mins, but Oldfield rolled back the years with a superb 60 break to take a useful lead. Although some tentative play ensued Oldfield held that advantage to win by 25 at the close.

Honours shared between Totton Rec and Chandlers Ford Central
2018-2019 Billiards League – Week 2 of 21 – October 12 2018
The Southampton Billiards league match between 2015 champions Totton Rec and 2017 champions Chandlers Ford Central, ended in a 3-3 draw, as the result went down to the fifth and final pairing.
Chandlers Ford’s Graham Hollick got his team off to the perfect start as he beat Mick Kunzi 200-156, and that was followed by Chandler’s Daniel Zagaroli making breaks of 38, 48, 61, 36 and 46 to beat Mike Thatcher 200-172. Totton fought back with Steve Allen making a 42 break during his 200-171 victory over Korbin Lowe.
Totton’s Lee Fitzpatrick was decisive in the team aggregate points total battle, as he overcame Chandler’s Terry Azor (31 and 31 breaks) by 200 to minus 15. Totton’s Tony Aldridge had his chance to win his game against Chandler’s newcomer Dean Turner, when Turner only required 2 points on 198. But Aldridge fell agonisingly close after missing a drop-cannon to eventually lose to a relieved Turner by 200-194!
Curdridge RBL made home advantage pay against Hamble Social to win 5-1. But it could have been all so different, as Hamble’s Mark Spridgeon beat Gwen Gamblin in the first pairing 200-187. But it was all Curdridge after that, as Derek Fry overcame Hamble’s Will Mildenhall by a close 200-192, Curdridge’s Clive Gamblin made a 37 break during his 200-107 victory over Nick Wood, and Brian Bull beat Hamble’s Tony Spridgeon 200-178. Curdridge’s Rob Smith overcame Paul Knights 200-153 to round off the match.
Park Gate RBL welcomed St Denys Cons and beat the current champions 4-2. Gate’s Paul Lawrence made a 31 break to help overcome Andy Carter 200-186. But Con’s Chris Bishop made a 44 break to level the match by beating Steve Boterhoek by a close 200-193. Park Gate's Ian Finch beat Mark Emm 200-85, but that was due to Emm having to unfortunately concede due to injury when Finch was on 172. Gate’s Chris Christodoulou made it 3-1 after overcoming Malcolm Willis 200-190. In the final game Con’s Ade Bridger pulled one back as he beat Chris Pullen 200-175.
Sarisbury Social beat visiting Churchills Eastleigh 4-2. Winners for Sarisbury were Geoff Knapp, Kas Remzi and Steve Gardiner against Derek Foster, Paul Adams (45 and 36 breaks) and Mark McLean respectively. Churchill’s wins came from Peter Green against Norman Bradfield and Mike Henstredge against John Oldfield in the last game.

2018-2019 Billiards season is up and running with the new spotted match balls!
2018-2019 Billiards League – Week 1 of 21 – October 3 2018
The Southampton Billiards League got its 2018-2019 season underway, with 8 teams competing for the prestigious trophy first competed for in 1936, playing with the new competition spotted match balls kindly donated by St Denys Con's Malcolm Willis and his company A1 Powder Coatings.
Hamble Social made the early running, as they beat visitors Sarisbury Social 5-1, but that was partly due to Sarisbury disappointingly fielding only four players. Sarisbury’s James Collinson got his team off to a great start as he beat Tony Spridgeon 200-158.
But Mark Spridgeon levelled for Hamble as he overcame John Oldfield 200-155. Hamble’s Nick Wood beat Kas Remzi 200-124 and Rob Shattock overcame Sarisbury’s Chris Collinson 200-169. Will Mildenhall had the walkover.
Churchills Eastleigh had a fine 4-2 victory when it looked as if they might lose 4-2 in the last game of the match. Churchill’s Derek Foster beat Steve Allen 200-180 in the first pairing and Simon Green played well to beat Mick Kunzi (39 break) 200-129 for a 2-0 lead.
Totton hit back with Mike Thatcher overcoming Mike Henstredge 200-164 and Tony Aldridge (37 break) victorious by 200-192 against Peter Green. Churchill’s Paul Adams looked well beaten by an improving Lee Fitzpatrick to trail by over 100 in the final stages. But he hit back with breaks of 36 and a week one high 59 to win by two points to win the aggregate and match!
St Denys Cons started their defence of the league title hosting Curdridge RBL, and it all started so well, with Andy Carter beating Rob Smith by a nail-biting 200-198. Curdridge were not overawed however, as Gwen Gamblin overcame Malcolm Willis 200-158, and that was followed by Curdridge’s Derek Fry making a 35 break during his 200-138 victory over Mark Emm.
Con’s Chris Bishop bounced back with a 38 break against Brian Bull to win by a close 200-193 to leave the team aggregate score at 696-791 in Curdridge’s favour. Clive Gamblin finished the match by beating Ade Bridger by 200-174 for a 4-2 team victory.
Chandlers Ford Central welcomed Park Gate RBL and won 4-2. Winner's for Chandlers were Daniel Zagaroli (47, 34, 34, and 56 breaks) against Chris Christodoulou, Terry Azor (50, 40 breaks) over Chris Pullen, and newcomer Dean Turner against Ian Finch. Park Gate’s victors were Steve Boterhoek against John Mullane (33, 41 breaks) and Paul Lawrence over Korbin Lowe (30, 33 breaks).
