Steve Allen wins SDBSA Snooker Singles title at the fourth attempt
(Competition run by Chris Christodoulou. Words and scores from Chris)
With the Group stages completed, Group A qualifier's Steve Allen who used home field advantage to top the group and with Paul Tavender winning his last frame to scrap through with three draws qualified from Group A with Paul Lawrence and Ian Finch who could still have qualified going into the last match just missing out.
Group B was a more straight forward affair as defending champion Nick Wood and Chris Christodoulou winning five of there six frames to qualify comfortably with Will Mildenhall and Chris Pullen missing out.
Semi Final 1 (Chandlers Ford Central)
Nick Wood 2-1 Paul Tavender
86-9, 42-53, 52-38
Both players struggled on the newly re clothed table at Chandlers Ford to find their touch and range, Wood settled the earlier and won frame one comfortably, Tavender responded by snatching frame two on the pink with both players having chances this pattern continued into the decider with Wood finally coming through.
Semi Final 2 (Chandlers Ford Central)
Steve Allen 2-1 Chris Christodoulou
61-32, 58-71, 59-9
As with the first semi both players struggled with fast conditions with Allen playing the more solid to take frame one, Christodoulou opened a 50 point and with two reds left Allen needed snookers, which he got with some fine snookers, Cristodoulou finally took the frame on the pink, the decider Christodoulou had the first two chances but was unable to get on the black both times with it near the bottom pocket, this seem to inspire Allen who played the more solid and ran away with the decider.
Final (Chandlers Ford Central)
Steve Allen 3-2 Nick Wood
9-78 (54 break) 55-32, 53-34, 58-73 (34 break) 59-23
Wood opened the final up in champions style with a fine 54 break to take the opener. Allen took frame two with solid play and frame three the same way. Wood who came from two nil down last year fought back to take frame four which included a 34 break, Allen did have a chance to take the title on the colours but lost position on the brown.
Down to the decider both players missed blacks of the spot early on and looked edgy, Allen found his range again and with a crucial twenty plus break left Wood leading snookers. Wood fought hard and got a snooker back but with him leaving the brown over the middle pocket off a miss hit safety conceded to give Allen his first SDBSA snooker title after narrowly missing out the last two years and his fourth final in all.

Nick Wood wins SDBSA Snooker Singles title
(Competition run by Chris Christodoulou. Words and scores from Chris)
After late withdraws on the eve of the competition from Paul Lawrence (back) and Chris Pullen, the remainder played a round robin with the top four going through to the finals night. Going into the final round robin group matches Steve Allen and Nick Wood had guaranteed their spots, this left Del King, Paul Tavender, Ian Finch and defending champion Chris Christodoulou battling for the final two spots.
With head to head`s counting if players tied on points tally everyone was keeping an eye on the other matches, Tavender beat Finch and had to wait to see if he qualified and with Christodoulou beating the unbeaten Allen to guarantee his spot this also put Tavender through and with Wood beating a hard fighting King the semi final line up was complete. Allen topped the round robin group ahead Wood with Christodoulou third and Tavender fourth.
Semi Finals:
Steve Allen 2-0 Paul Tavender. 61-51, 76-8
For the third year running they have been drawn in the semi finals, Tavender winning in 2016 and Allen winning last year. A close first frame that could have gone either way with both players having their chances finally went the way of Allen on the black and with some solid match play and Tavender loosing his rhythm Allen took frame two quite comfortably.
Nick Wood 2-0 Chris Christodoulou. 64-53, 61-33
Good safety and tactical play from both players in frame one, Christodoulou had the upper hand going down to the colour`s and needed one ball to secure the frame, Wood never left him frame ball with good tactical play and when his chance came cleared blue pink and black to snatch it. Wood started frame two well and built up a twenty point advantage, Christodoulou
missed the last red when he had his chance to clear and Wood mopped the balls up to book his final spot.
Final:
Nick Wood 3-2 Steve Allen. 17-166, 42-68, 80-26, 69-59, 69(43)-25
Allen went two nil up playing superb match play, Wood didn't pot his first ball till the end of the first frame, Wood finally found some form to pull one back, Allen took control of the fourth frame and built up a healthy lead and with Wood leaving Allen well in the balls looked like it was all over, a surprising missed easy red starter left Wood with a chance to claw some of the deficit back which he did but after running out of position had to play safe.
Allen created several other chances to win the final but couldn't take them, Wood finally took the frame on the black to make it 2-2. Wood played superbly in the decider making a early twenty break followed by a fine 43 break, Allen tried to fight back but Wood was in the driving seat and potted what he needed to be champion.
Many thanks to John Oldfield and Sarisbury Green club for hosting the finals night.

Chris Christodoulou beats Steve Allen in a last frame thriller!
(Competition run by Chris Christodoulou. Words from Chris)
Semi-finals
Paul Tavender 0-2 Steve Allen
9-42, 6-59
A surprising easy win for Steve as Paul failed to reproduce the form of the previous week, and with Steve not leaving any starter's for Paul ran out to a very comfortable win.
Chris Christodoulou 2-0 Paul Lawrence
59-58, 54-52
Just like most of their previous matches over the years the match was very close and went to two black ball games, a long black gave Chris the first and the second Paul played a fabulous positional shot from pink to black only to miss the black and leave it over the middle for Chris to knock in.
Final
Chris Christodoulou 3-2 Steve Allen
28-66, 57-27, 46-57, 59-46, 69-57
After trading early frames Steve stole frame three after Chris rattled the blue and left it over the pocket, frame four with Steve in control had match ball brown in the middle which he missed, and after a superb blue to pink positional Chris could only drop the pink in from an accute angle leaving the white near the centre pocket and with the black on its spot cut the black in to level. The decider was nip and tuck all the way and with three colours remaining the match could go either way, a mistake on the blue left Chris his chance to snatch the match which he took after potting the blue and landing perfect on the pink which he potted to win a very tough match.
Special thanks to Steve Allen and Totton Rec. Club for helping with the final.
ROUND ROBIN MATCHES
Due to two late withdraws it was decided to hold a round robin event between the remaining seven players with the top four qualifying for semi-finals.
An eventful evening took place at Park Gate RBL and going into the final round robin games it emerged that five players had a chance to make the semi finals and it was possible that five players could end up with same points and with head to head counting this made an
exciting final round of matches.
Paul Tavender was the first to book his place in the last four when blitzed Ian Finch in less than 10 minutes which included a 50+ break in under four minutes, this left Ian waiting
on other results to go his way. Paul Lawrence also booked his place in the last four with a comfortable victory Chris Pullen, still in progress was Steve Allen against Chris Christodoulou which meant a win for Steve and he would top the group as he would be on same points as Tavender but had beaten him in the round robin, this would also put Ian through as we would have same points as Christodoulou but had beaten him in the round robin match, with
the colours remaining and a unlucky in off for Allen left Christodoulou a chance to clear which he obliged to book his semi spot and leave Ian to miss out.

SNOOKER SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP RUN BY CHRIS CHRISTODOULOU
Hi Paul,
scores and report from snooker finals night.
First Semi-final:
Steve Allen 1-2 Paul Tavender
59-41, 8-55, 21-78
Both players struggled in the first frame on match table one with the ultra fast tables of Churchills, plenty of missed pots and over hit safety's led to a long drawn out frame with Totton`s stalwart Steve Allen using all his experience to grind out and take the first frame.
Park Gates last seasons player of the year Paul Tavender raised his game and with Steve still struggling with the ultra fast table breezed through the next two frames with his potting display booked his final spot.
Second Semi-final:
Chris Christodoulou 0-2 Paul Lawrence
27-57, 59-63
Paul gained revenge for his 2013 semi loss to Chris, both players started nervously and like the first semi struggled with the ultra fast conditions on table 2. Paul adapted to the table quicker than his opponent and with five colours left in frame one Chris needed a snooker, which he got followed by another one to put himself back in the frame, not to be out done Paul potted a long green followed by brown to take frame 1.
Frame two Chris started the better and had a healthy lead going down to the colours, a great long yellow and with green near the middle looked like winning the frame but ended up snookered behind the pink with the frame at his mercy, a safety battle followed with Paul laying some fine snookers only for his opponent to escape only to go in off the third one, a cracking long green from Paul followed by a long brown and with the white look like going in off in the middle and handing the frame to his opponent it stopped on the lip, a difficult blue potted and with the white tight on the side cushion Paul seized the moment and played the pink dead weight and potted the black to snatch the frame and match.
Final
Paul Tavender 0-3 Paul Lawrence
48-60, 57-70, 45-62
The title and bragging rights were up for grabs for the Park Gate pair and both players started
the final brightly with some fine potting, and trying to out pot each other Tavender gaining control and looked like winning the first frame after building a healthy lead with only one red remaining, Lawrence had other ideas a great last red and with pin point positional play cleared up to the pink to snatch it.
Frame two Lawrence now in confident mood was on a 23 break with reds he had developed in great positions looked like he was going to take the frame in one visit, a horrendous kick on the black let Tavender back in who raised his pace and game and with in no time was flying away with the frame, back came Lawrence who chipped away and with only four colours left needed the lot, a fluke snooker had Tavender in trouble a failed escape left Lawrence with a half chance on the Brown who potted a it and with a great positional shot landed on the blue, a great pink followed with the black and Lawrence had stolen yet another frame on the night. Frame three Lawrence with his tail up was always in control and took it to claim the title and bragging rights over his doubles partner.
Big than you to Mike Henstredge for help in organising the final at Churchills and special
thanks to Lozza for brushing and ironing the tables, thanks also to Mike Thatcher and

Terry Azor wins the 2013-2014 SDBSA Snooker Singles Trophy
Terry Azor (Chandlers Ford Central) has won the Southampton Billiards and Snooker Association’s snooker singles championship, held on the great tables at Shirley Cons club, defeating Nick Wood (Hamble Social) 2-1 in the final.
Azor beat compatriot Wayne Muddiman 2-0 in one semi, and Wood overcame Josh Barnes (Totton Rec) 2-0, helped by a timely 28 break in the second frame.
In the final, Azor made a 42 break from nowhere, after Wood had missed a pot red while stretching slightly over the pack to drop it into a middle pocket.
After Azor’s break Wood eventually conceded with the six colours on, 23-72.
In the second frame, at 28-15, Wood came roaring back with a 35 break to lead 63-15. Azor responded with 9 but missed and conceded the frame 63-24 to set up a final frame decider!
So after two very good, fairly open frames, both players probed around at the start of the third and final frame, missing some relatively easy balls.
Azor then made a 17 break to lead 21-1. A safety bout ensued, with both players playing some fine containing snooker - as we know there's more to the game than just potting!
Azor then went for a long red down a rail, but missed and went in-off! A misjudged safety from Wood brought a red up with the white and left it over the left middle. Azor made 24 from it to lead 45-5. Wood potted a red but was unlucky to find himself tight on the cushion and missed the following black.
Azor then went for a long red and left it up, but after potting the red, Wood unfortunately missed a difficult black along the top rail. A safety shot from Wood crossed a red over to nestle right on top of the black, which was in the jaws of the pocket from his previous miss!
He then laid a snooker on the two other reds. Azor missed the red near the black in the pocket jaws completely, as his white slid of the right hand rail more than he thought it would!
Wood then cut one of the reds over towards the black and knocked the black in! Azor potted the red for 53-11. Azor then made 5 to lead 58-11. And with the colours left, Wood graciously conceded defeat which left Azor with a second title in three years. Well done Terry and Nick!

Wood then cut one of the reds over towards the black and knocked the black in! Azor potted the red for 53-11. Azor then made 5 to lead 58-11. And with the colours left, Wood graciously conceded defeat which left Azor with a second title in three years. Well done Terry and Nick!

SAPEL HANS WINS THE SNOOKER SINGLES TROPHY 2012-2013 at Churchills Eastleigh
Thursday 4 July
Sapel Hans (Chandlers Ford Central. left in picture) has won the SDBSA Individual Snooker cup by beating Steve Allen (Totton Rec) 3-1 at Churchill's Eastleigh
Hans and Allen struggled at first to acclimatise to the fast and fairly tight number 1 table, but Hans eventually found his long potting range and took the first frame by 64-14
The second went the Chandlers man's way as well, taking this one 60-26. The third frame had a determined Allen play some solid positional shots to win by 58-12
The fourth frame saw both players play some well-weighted safety shots to remain in touching distance of each other. However with the colours remaining, Hans potted the blue ball to leave Allen requiring one snooker. It was not long before Hans duly potted the pink to lead 52-32 and complete a fine championship victory. Well done Sapel!

Terry Azor wins Billiard League Snooker Singles Title
It was certainly “not for the faint-hearted”
A two-and-a-quarter hour slog on one of the region’s toughest tables ended with a 3-1 victory for Terry Azor over Chris Christodoulou in the billiards league’s individual snooker final.
The ageless Chandlers Ford Central Club skipper admitted that Nick Jennings’ tight practice table at Churchills, Eastleigh, is “hard to play”. “It’s not for the faint-hearted,” he added. “We weren’t on top of our games and I’m not surprised it took a length of time.” Christodoulou, who had knocked in a 98 against Steve Boterhoek in the last-16, took an early lead with a 22 break.
But it was Azor who stroked in a glorious long black in the centre of a corner pocket to nick the first frame. Remarkably, it was the first time he had actually been in front. Christodoulou extracted a seven-point penalty from a required snooker in the second but lost to Azor’s thin-cut black into the green pocket.
After opening frames of 39 and 38 minutes, the pair fairly zipped through a free-flowing third in just 16 minutes. Christodoulou cleared the colours to the black to pull one back. And a 30 break in the fourth appeared to be enough to force a decider but Azor won on the pink.
The newly-crowned champion, who accounted for his Chandlers Ford Central teammate Wayne Muddiman in the semi-finals, said: “Anyone who knows me knows I don’t give up. It’s just a case of staying in there and knuckling down.” And he added: “Chris has known me for a long time and we share mutual respect.”
Christodoulou, who beat his Netley Central Club teammate Paul Lawrence in the last-four, said: “I had my chances. “Terry potted an amazing black to win the first frame. “Little things didn’t go my way in the fourth frame at the end. I had him in trouble a couple of times and he got away with it. Then he got me into trouble and I didn’t get away with it.”
Still searching for a first win after two final defeats, Christodoulou added: “The table was lovely but I thought the balls were very light. (But) the conditions were the same for both of us. “The best player won on the night.”
Frame scores, Azor first: 58-51, 60-52, 34-63, 65-55.
