When Paul Adams met Terry Griffiths for a lesson and a chat about billiards!
In 2011, Churchills Eastleigh's Billiards number one Paul Adams met ex-professional and current coach Terry Griffiths at his superb Snooker Academy venue in Llanelli,
Carmarthenshire, Wales, for a one-on-one snooker and billiards lesson.
Terry sent me a questionnaire to fill in before we met to find out what I wanted to achieve from the lesson and going forward. So after talking to him about wanting to be more consistent in my cueing and checking if I had picked up any bad habits since having a few lessons with the late great billiards player Jack Karman, back in the 1990s, we travelled north to Llanelli when staying in Gower Peninsula for a holiday in November 2011.
The lesson didn't start too well in my wife's mind, as Terry said he thought billiards was "a little boring"! However, after half an hour of tweaking my grip and various things, he had me consistently potting a red off of the middle spot into the top pockets with ease. The main thing he changed was my bridge hand / cue position in relation to how close to the cueball I was getting. Previously I was too far away from the cueball with my hand, something I hadn't really noticed over the years. After changing this and a few other 'secret' pointers he was really pleased with the improvement in my cueing. I was getting through the cueball much better which helped with accuracy and spin etc.
The proof was in the pudding so to speak. After getting back home and incorporating all the points Terry had suggested, I was amazed at how much better my game was. In fact, making a 131 clearance at snooker and 136 at billiards on the same day was a real bonus! It did take a while to get used to the new tweaks during league matchplay and some of the Hythe Social players during a match said "what has Terry done to your action? It's terrible!" But it all came good after a few weeks of getting used to it.
Terry was such a gentleman and chatted with my wife and I for much longer than our booked two hours. In fact we stayed for over four hours in total. My wife looked a bit bored at the end and was desperate for a coffee and cake, so we thanked Terry for a memorable day. A wife can only take so much chat about billiards and snooker from two green baize lovers!

Chandlers Ford Central's John Mullane wins through to the prestigious English Amateur Billiards Championship semi-finals
Chandlers Ford's John Mullane has again won through to the semi-finals of the prestigious English Amateur Billiards Championship. He beat former grand masters champion Simon Snee from Middlesbrough in the last 16, and North Yorkshire England International John Marwood in the quarter-finals by 200-plus points in both games.
Mullane made four breaks over 80, including two small centuries over Snee, and then three 80 plus breaks in beating Jonathan Marwood who is ranked in the top 16 in the world rankings. He has drawn Phil Welham, twice English amateur champion, in the semi-final but has at least avoided current multi-champion Rob Hall!
If anybody is interested in a weekend in the Peak District of Darley Dale, the semi-finals will be played on Saturday 21st March and the final is on the day after Sunday 22nd March. The venue is fairly small so tickets sell out fast!
All details will be on the EABA website

Azor and Lowe have played in the Thailand Open Billiards Championship!
They didn't win the tournament but they both won a match and Korbin compiled an 83 break. We had better watch out for their newly honed skills in the coming leagues season! Well done boys!

Our very own Terry Azor and Korbin Lowe, who have been regular players on the world billiards circuit this year, will be jetting out to Bangkok next month to play in the Thailand open!
Both players have had a great success so far this season especially with Terry winning the challenge cup when they played up in Scotland. Their results have seen Terry rise to 38 and Korbin 65 in the world for this year’s order of merit which also gained them automatic qualification earlier in the year for the World Matchplay Championships.
With players such as the reigning world champion Sourav Kothari (India), the world number one Peter Gilchrist (Singapore) and the current Asian champion Dhvaj Haria (India) playing in the competition is should prove to be a truly memorable experience.
There will be live streaming of the Thailand open on the world billiards website and a link is included below. The competition runs from 17th – 20th July.

Totton's Mick Kunzi doubles-up on Snooker and Billiards Cup win
On 31st May I attended the Walter Child Clark League Presentation Night to receive two trophies.
The Cup was for winning the Snooker Veterans (over 50's) played last December. A one night event playing in a one frame knock-out . . I had five matches to win the Championship.
The Shield. I had five round robin matches . . won four and lost one and scored enough points to make the final which was 300 up played in May. I had a couple of over 30's and a well manufactured 63 in the final.
The Billiard Competition is over 120 years old and my dad won it twice (1964 & 1965) for me
. . now I've done for him!
The games were played on excellent tables at St James Institute, Bournemouth.
See you at the AGM . . thanks Mick Kunzi
Well done Mick! Superb effort

Mullane and Azor put on a billiards show for Mottisfont!
Our very own billiard superstars John Mullane and Terry Azor made a special guest appearance at the Mottisfont Social Club, Romsey on Tuesday 15 May, each playing a 90 minute exhibition match against two Test Valley Billiard League players. The test valley players both received a 200-point start to help them against our talented duo!
John Mullane made a 73 break after ten minutes to stamp his authority on the game against Ian Hares (’Cannons Cup’ winner) and continued to mesmerise his opponent and the crowd with three-cushion cannons. He also made some fantastic red ball potting from distance to get himself out of trouble. A 54 break a the-top-of-the-table in five minutes towards the end of the game helped wow the crowd once more.
Hares is a long established player in the Mottisfont league, but has never been put under this sort of pressure before. He displayed great potting ability and once John had caught him up after 40 minutes, relaxed and showed that he has a good billiards game too!
Terry Azor played some superb ’short jennys’ from tight positions in his game with Kallum Tarrant (Scratch Cup winner), and showed great control with his losing hazards into a middle pocket from hand. Azor levelled the scores after the hour mark, then showed some great all-round billiards. Tarrant is an up and coming talent for the league. He shows great potting ability and is working hard to improve his billiards.
John and Terry certainly helped both players and there was time at the end of the evening for both of them to show some shots and talk about billiards in general to an appreciative crowd!
(Words from Korbin Lowe)
Thanks for Mottisfont for hosting the event and to Korbin Lowe for refereeing and Peter Green for marking

Awesome Azor obliterates his highest billiards break to make 270
(Yes, you read correctly... 270... against me in a practice session before the Usher Cup semi final!)
Just as England cricketer Ben Stokes found out when he made his wonderful 258 against South Africa this year at Newlands ground, Cape Town in South Africa, these knocks only come along once in a while, so you had better make the most of it! Terry being a keen cricketer will appreciate the comparison, although there weren't as many 6 shots as Stokes played!
We started practicing on the wonderfully fast, left hand table at Chandlers Ford Central, and traded high twenty breaks for the first few minutes. It was all a side show however, as I joked with terry on our highest breaks - mine being 150 and Terry's being 151!
Terry then got to 50 odd with all round play and a touch of top-of-the-table to get the feel of his favourite table. You could see his relief when he got to 70, as he knew that he was cueing well for the Usher Cup semi final that evening. When he got to 102 we both knew that this was not a run-of-the-mill practice session.
When he got to 148, I joked again that he must go on and beat his highest. Well he did that, and then went on to make 10 hazards or more four times in the total break. In my humble opinion he only got out of position three times, and only played three bad shots in the whole 40 odd minutes it took, but recovered with some superb touch cannon play. When he got to 189 he just had the red ball under such control, that he didn't need to play any difficult shots, just in-offs into the middle pockets, pushing the red up and down the table with unnerving accuracy.
When he passed 200 I said, "come on, 250 or 300 now". He was even fielding his own in-offs on the right hand side of the table he was so relaxed. 250 was passed, but he lost my white, so unfortunately the magical 300 was out of reach. But on he went to the fantastic heights of 270. Even Terry remarked that now in his 60s he’s getting better. My late father at the age of 75 was getting better and beating his highest break, so it shows that with a little dedication and belief, that we can all get better at this wonderful game!
Terry's team mate John Mullane said it was within Terry to make another 150, but Terry couldn't quite believe him. Well after that wonderful exhibition I think a few more 200s are on the cards, and maybe even that elusive 300... Well-done Terry!

Totton Rec's Mick Kunzi wins the Walter Child Clark Individual Billiards Championship in Parkstone, Dorset... nearly 50 years after his father won it!
Words from Mick himself...
Hi Paul .. I won it . . the match (300 up scratch) was hard fought, with my opponent potting (and flukeing!) everything .. I was unwell, throat like sandpaper and nervous, but managed to win by nearly 50! No significant breaks. I am grateful to all the players of the Soton and District Billiard League. This marvellous win for me would never have happened had I not been playing in our League every week !!
The Parkstone Billiard League started in 1906, and like our Gordon Lewis Trophy, in the past this was the one to win! In 1964 I asked my dad to enter which he did and won, also defending and winning in 1965 . . now after 50 years, I've won it for him !!
Pics are of me with the shield and a black and white photo of my dad who also won two club championships the same year. The third picture is of dad still winning later on in life !! Regards Mick K.
Well done Mick, I knew you could do it and we love your enthusiasm in our league!

A GREAT WEEKEND OF BILLIARDS!
WORDS FROM MIKE KUNZI...
On Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th June, ten Southampton League players took part in the English Billiards Social Series Tournament at Cue 'T's Marchwood. The Competition was held over 6 one hour sessions in pools of 6 and 8 on the Saturday with a dinner in the evening. Sunday saw the qualifiers (last 16) battle it out with a straight knockout and the best losers from Saturday playing in a plate competition.
John Mullane was in fine form taking revenge on Brian Harvey who piped him last time by a couple of points. John won all his session games compiling breaks of 71, 61, 71, 87. In the last 16 he made a great 133 followed by 65 and 68 losing in the semi final. Terry Azor gave his usual gutsy performance with 76 and 71 losing to the British Champion also in the semi's. Steve Alen (44) qualified to the last 16 as did team mate Mick Kunzi (61) who lost to Rob Hall (British Champ) 113, 73, 69. Wayne Muddiman and Peter Green played the Saturday sessions and Ray Smith, Mike Thatcher and Dave Wells played on the Sunday with Dave Wells winning the Plate!
It was a wonderful weekend of first class billiards with prize money . . not forgetting Will Middlehall's game against Rob Hall (who won the overall event) . . Will and myself watched in amazement as the Champion conjured breaks of 267, 81, 69, 64 with some class top of the table play. Will did go on to make the semi's in the plate.
Mick Kunzi
WORDS FROM ORGANISER TOM...
Another fine weekend held at the Cue T’s Club in Marchwood and a big thanks to Steve Rutherford and his staff for making us so so welcome.
The Linclnshire Poachers took the spoils again with Rob Beating Chris in the final both outdoing the formidable pair of Billiard Players in John Mullane and Terry Azor.
The Competition brought an old player out of the woodwork, Dave Wells from up my way in North Wales showing his skills by beating Tony French in the plate final.
Gentlemen I must point out to you all that whilst we are trying our best to bring the enjoyment back to Billiards with the EB-Series,We still have to have some sort of rules that we all abide by. Under our rules section 7. Dress Code, We must all keep up a standard of Dress Code it would not be proper if we let this slip and I therefor ask all players to read this section and please keep within these guide lines.

EB-Series is an informal organisation formed by a group of players to promote and arrange weekend Billiard Events. Most of the players in these events will be familiar with previous events from the now defunct EBOS series and World Billiards. These were held over a period of 5 years and involved great Billiards but mixed with a great Social aspect off the table. Since the take over of these events by World Billiards it has been felt by many players that these events have lost the social side of the game.
As many players attended these events without any hope of winning them, but instead enjoyed all aspects of the game and had a great social evening and fun weekend, players had missed these events and a group of these decided to attempt to bring back this social side of the game and in addition play some billiards as well.
There were many aspect to the old series which were great but also many silly rules which began to stop players entering the events such as being tied to certain hotels, bad seeding etc. We aim to ensure that these events are as rule free as possible.

There were many aspect to the old series which were great but also many silly rules which began to stop players entering the events such as being tied to certain hotels, bad seeding etc. We aim to ensure that these events are as rule free as possible.
- They will be open to all players regardless of ability, age disability etc.
- All money taken as entry money will be paid out in cash on the Sunday of the Event
- No Hotel Rules – we will suggest a hotel nearby but not force you to stay there
- Rules just sensible ones agreed by the players
- Rules set by the promoter of the event but sensible ones enforced the the fair play rules set by the Tournament Director
- Clive Scott had agreed to be TD in as many events as possible
- There will be no committee as such in a formal structure, it will simply be people wanting to help and get on with it
- At the moment people helping out in no particular order include Clive Scott – TD, Tom Hughes -website updates, Jamies Barker – Logo design, Felix Knoll – Website graphic, Peter Stanyer – website Design, Rob Hall, Bem French , Chris Taylor. I will update this list with everyone else when I get chance. This is not a committee.
- No crazy complicated draws No Seeding simple draw out of the hat on the day, You may be in a group of death or an easy group but no one can complain except to Clive and his unfavourable hat.
- No broken promises – we hope not but you cannot please everyone all the time
- We aim to promote Billiards as a sport and NOT be affiliated with any other group. We will Not compete with any other group and always try to hold our events so they do not conflict with another event. We hope to keep our calendar online and as accurate as possible. We wish that all our players still enter and play in all the other events such as EABA, WBL, EASB to support this wonderful game.
- We have no sponsors but hope that people will support us on an event by event basis. So if you wish to sponsor the high break or 10 shot or supply a cup please do so it will be much appreciate and well received.
TERRY AZOR'S ASSESSMENT OF THE TOURNAMENT...
Hi Paul
I always try to be upbeat about all things, relating to Billiards. and can I just say, that you doing a great job with Billiard site and the league organisation.but so many players in our league said they where interested in attending the ABC tournament at Fareham. we had only four players and one spectator very disappointing from the Southampton league. 27 players in all played,One of the lowest turnouts at an ABC tournament The good news was that Mike Thatcher and myself made it to the quarter-finals and got our money back and John mullane lost in the final against Rob Hall. if you can add this on the site so people can read it i appreciate it. thanks Terry

ABC BILLIARDS TOURNAMENT AT FAREHAM SNOOKER CLUB ON SUNDAY 9 FEBRUARY AT 10.30AM
ALL PLAYERS ARE WELCOME TO COMPETE
Details from Terry Azor
The 6th and final A.B.C billiards event is being held at Fareham Snooker Club.
Its a first time for a very long time it has come this close to Southampton and it would be good to see the Southampton billiard district players coming along and taking part.
Cost is £15, which guarantees you one hour in the main comp. Which is a knockout format.
If you go out in the first round you go into the plate comp. Which is also a half hour knock out format.
Getting a return on your money starts on the losing semis, the amount of which depends how many enter. There are a handful of very good players but it is down to the luck of the draw and they can be drawn against each other.
There are also lots of club players like us who just play for enjoyment and are decent on the day.
Starts at 11:00 - you should be there by 10:30 to register for the comp.
Thanks - Terry Azor

SELECTED RESULTS (BREAKS)
Last-16: John Mullane (Winchester) 331(64, 55)-175 Chris Mitchell
(Cornwall), Peter Shelley (West Midlands) 206-172 Mike Kunzi
(Parkstone), Rob Hall (Lincoln) 288(184)-159(50) Terry Azor
(Southampton), Guy Heys (Jersey) 231-138 Mike Thatcher (Shirley).
Quarter-finals: Brian Harvey (Somerset) 233-228(81) Mullane.
Below is the report from Terry Azor:
EBSS Southampton: 1st/2nd June 2013
Lincoln based Rob Hall, widely regarded as the best billiard player in
England, won the third EBSS event at the Cue T’s Club in Marchwood,
Southampton, beating surprise finalist Roy Bacon 456-219 in the 90
minute final. He received £250 and an engraved tankard and also took
the high break prize for a run of 184.
The match was slow to ignite, with both players taking a while to
adapt to the conditions. It was Hall who got the first real
opportunity, making a break of 77 which broke down when he missed a
long pot into the baulk pocket. The only other significant
contribution was a run of 72 by Hall later in the match - which could
have been much more if he hadn’t lost his opponent’s white and been
forced to end the break after reaching 15 hazards, but his fluent,
measured and consistent play enabled him to produce a number of
smaller breaks in the 30s and 40s throughout the match. In addition to
his 184, he made several other century breaks during the day and Peter
Shelley also made 125.
Roy Bacon, now based in Duntocher, Scotland and described by TD Clive
Scott as ‘the day’s surprise package’, wasn’t able to maintain the
form that had enabled him to reach the final. His highest break of the
match was 46 and he was struggling against the run for most of the
match - a run of four successive flukes by Hall midway through the
game elicited a wry smile.
Steve Crosland won the Plate, beating up and coming young player Chris
Coumb from Plymouth. More accustomed to being at the business end of
tournaments Crosland, by his own admission playing below par, found
himself competing against Mark Hirst and John Malane in by far the
hardest group of the round robin stage and failed to qualify for the
main tournament.
Players had a most enjoyable weekend at Cue T's with good playing
facilities and an excellent meal which was laid on for them at the
club on the Saturday evening. The EBSS tour are grateful to club
manager Steve Rutherford and his staff for an excellent weekend and
hope to return in the future.

EBSS (English Billiards Social Series)
Billiards Competition at Cue Ts Club, Marchwood, Nr Southampton, 31st May – 2nd June 2013
All entries welcome
A social gathering of Billiard Players from all over the country!
News from Tom Hughes (EABA)
I have just been onto your web-site again and I am absolutely amazed at the lay out and the well run well organised set up you have.
I am as you know on the English Amateur Billiards Association ( EABA) Committee together with Clive and we help organise many amateur Billiard events and also run our own web site.
The reason I am sending you this email is to bring you up to date with a Tournament we are running in the Marchwood Club , over the weekend of 31st May --2nd June 2013, It will be a Social gathering of Billiard Players from all over the Country, We haven't been in touch with you because John & Terry were going to arrange for other players around your area to participate in the event.
These events are called the EBSS (English Billiards Social Series) of which the Marchwood event will be the 3rd of its kind and the other two previous attracted past Billiards World Champions and Amateur Champions alike. We are not expecting anyone of that caliber for the Marchwood event as they are out of the country so the majority of the players will be of the standard of you local league players with one or two very good players making the numbers up.
The EBSS is just as its name suggests a very good weekend of Social Billiards with open draw and very friendly but competitive Billiards event , Paul if any of your league players would like to participate in this friendly competition please ask them to go to the EBSS web site (www.eaba.co.uk/) or contact Clive (01603 8602980 ) or myself on (0799 057 3535).
Kind regards

MULLANE AND AZOR SERVE UP A BILLIARD THRILLER IN DERBY – 2013
John Mullane and Terry Azor travelled all the way up to the Beaconsfield Conservative Club in Derby, to play in the last 16 of the prestigious English Amateur Billiards Championship, and when John’s wife Jane did the draw, she went and drew them against each other!
The matches were played over a 4-hour, non-handicap, timed format and some superb billiards was played. Mullane and Azor put on a fine display, scoring a total of 1762 points between them, with both men making centuries. Azor made his first, a fine 106, and led the ex-England amateur number one by 99 points at the two-hour mark. In the third hour, Azor still led, but this inspired Mullane, and helped by a 108, pulled away to eventually win by 136 over his good friend
Commercial pilot Martin Goodwill (some will remember his name from the 90s, when our own Dave Burgess had some great battles with him) played some of his best billiards against Terry Ward, and several who watched him said the Martin of old was back, but unfortunately he met the man in form Rob Hall and it was game over!
The semi final draw was made on the day, and pitched Mullane against Darren Kell, and Mathew Sutton against Rob Hall. The games will be played at the Joseph Whitworth Centre, Darley Dale, in the Derwent Valley in Derbyshire, over the weekend of 13th & 14th April 2013, for what will surely be a superb feast of billiards. We wish John every success

KEN JONES 1944 – 2012
SAINTS FOOTBALL STAR AND LOCAL SNOOKER GREAT
It is with a sad heart that we report that Ken Jones, ex-Saints fullback from the 60s and a great snooker player and coach, has died over Christmas aged 68
Ken was born, in Havercroft, near Wakefield in 1944, into a footballing family with his dad a fine schoolboy player and his grandfather Aaron Jones turning out for Barnsley, Notts County and Birmingham in the 1900s
Jones signed for Bradford Park Avenue in September 1961, aged 17, but after making 100 appearances with the club he was to leave his beloved Yorkshire and headed south when legendary Saints manager Ted Bates came knocking. He signed two days before his 21st birthday in 1965, playing eight times as Saints won promotion in his first season with the club. He was widely regarded as the best full-back playing in Division 4 when Bates decided he wanted his services to bolster Southampton’s ambitions
He went on to play 92 times for Saints with his last game for the club coming against Tottenham on January 31, 1970
But his sporting career was not to end with football. He soon fell back on a duel passion of snooker having first picked up a cue aged nine, joining the Southampton & District Social Clubs League. He went on to lift four Town Championships. World snooker coach and good friend David Mumford said: “He was a top top bloke, loved and revered and respected by all of us what ever age. “Snooker will be a poorer place without him.”
More recently he was known as a top coach to Hampshire snooker stars such as Nick Jennings and Billy Castle. Castle, 20, from Marchwood, said: “He was legendary and more than just a coach for me - he was a father figure in snooker. “Everybody who knew him will have a good word to say for him, he will always be a legend.”
He will be sorely missed by all of us
