St Denys Cons' Andy Carter goes one better to win the Stuart Hamper Memorial Challenge
Stuart Hamper Memorial Individual Billiards Handicap Challenge final 2018-2019 played at Park Gate RBL on Wednesday 24 April
St Denys Cons' Andy Carter went one better in this season's Stuart Hamper Individual Handicap Challenge final, as he beat compatriot Mark Emm in the final played at Park Gate RBL. Carter had lost to Chandlers Ford Central’s Korbin Lowe in last year's final, so the victory was an even sweeter achievement.
In two well contested semi-final games, Carter (receive +35) was drawn against St Denys Cons teammate Derek King (receive +65) in one semi-final. And the match flowed both ways in the first three-quarters, with numerous 20 point breaks and fine shots being played by both players. Carter however made a decisive 21 unfinished to reach the required 200 points, with King left on a close 176.
In the other semi-final, Totton’s Tony Aldridge (receive +30) was paired with the third St Denys Cons player at the final’s night, Mark Emm. Emm started well with a 28 break to help him lead by 176 to 156. Aldridge played some fine cannons and long in-offs but Emm finished the game with a 19 break and eventually won by 200-176.
The final was, in comparison to the two semi-finals, an edgy affair, as both players struggled to control their cue balls on the wonderfully prepared Park Gate RBL playing surface. Carter got into a rhythm with a fine 29 break, but that was the highest of the match, as only a few high teen breaks followed in the tense game. Emm made a 16 and 18 to try and find some form but Carter finished the game with a 14 unfinished for a memorable 200-131 victory. Congratulations Andy!

Chandlers Ford Central's Lowe ends the night on a first-time high!
Stuart Hamper Memorial Individual Billiards Handicap Challenge
Semi-Finals and Final – Churchills Eastleigh, Wednesday 18 April 2018
Chandlers Ford Central’s Korbin Lowe has won the Stuart Hamper Memorial Individual Handicap Billiards Challenge Championship for the first time, after a fine display of all-round billiards in the semi-final and final played at Churchills Eastleigh.
In the first semi-final St Denys Cons’ Derek King (receive +90) faced-off against teammate Andy Carter (receive +30). There was drama almost immediately, as King’s cue tip came off mid break, and he had to have it glued back on to continue! King led for most of the first to 200 points game, playing some fine pots and cannons. But Carter clawed his way back into contention with some excellent in-offs and cannons himself, eventually triumphing by 200-173.
In the other semi-final, Chandler’s Lowe (receive +5) was drawn against Totton Rec’s Mick Kunzi (receive -25). Lowe played superbly to make breaks of 22, 37, 38 and a 29 unfinished, and leave Kunzi, who made a consolation 31 break, dreaming of what might have been, winning by a margin of 200-32.
The final was an evenly poised affair between two of the fairly new entrants to the prestigious Southampton Billiards League. Carter led by 40 points for some time, with Lowe trying to find his semi final form. Both players showed their improving billiards knowledge, but the tension of their first final appearance was getting to them! Lowe made two telling breaks of 29 and 25 which helped him towards the winning line. Carter gave all he could to draw level, but Lowe was not to be denied as he ran out a 200-153 champion. Well done to all the semi-finalists and well done Korbin!

Fry wins his third title and Zagaroli stars with a wonderful 111
The Stuart Hamper Memorial Individual Handicap Billiards Challenge 2016-2017
Semi-finals and final played at Churchills Eastleigh on Thursday 20 April
The prestigious Stuart Hamper Memorial Individual Billiards Handicap Challenge paired Curdridge’s two time winner Derek Fry (receive +75) against Chandlers Ford Central's Mike Thatcher (receive +80) and Chandlers Ford Central’s Daniel Zagaroli (receive -230) against teammate Ray Smith (receive +105).
The pairing between Fry (receive +75) and Thatcher (receive +80), on the tighter faster number one table, had both players playing some fine all round play during the first to 200 points game format. Fry cued off with a 17 break, but back came Thatcher to lead at the three quarter stage. Fry hit back again, making a crucial 19 break, but Thatcher kicked on to lead in the last 20 points. He played some fine long in-offs to only need five points for game, but Fry stepped in to make a 14 unfinished for a great win.
Zagaroli on the other table had to give away a massive 335 points start on the handicap to compatriot Smith. It didn’t worry him one iota though, as it hasn’t all season, as he compiled a sublime 111 break. It was made up of all round billiards play and unnervingly accurate potting to mesmerise us. He also made smaller runs of 36, 38 and 30 to close in on the last 20 points. Smith however made a fine 18 break and showed his mettle by climbing his way to 199! With an in-off white required for the match, he narrowly missed it, letting in Zagaroli in for a pot red and follow through in-off to pinch a remarkable game.
The final had Zagaroli start from where he left off in the semi, making breaks of 35, 58 and a 76 – when another nailed on century was beckoning. However, Fry showed why he has won the trophy (named after his long time team mate Stuart Hamper) twice before, by showing his own steely determination. He made two telling contributions of 20 and 21 to close in on the 200 points mark. Zagaroli made a 29 in the final few minutes, but Fry held himself together to win his third title by 200-100. Congratulations Derek!

Curdridge's Derek Fry wins the
2016 Stuart Hamper Individual
Billiards Challenge for the second
time in three years!
Churchills Eastleigh, Wednesday 20 April 2016
The Stuart Hamper Memorial Individual Handicap Billiards Challenge had three Curdridge Royal British Legion players and one Hamble Social cueist all vying for the prestigious trophy at Churchills Eastleigh.
The semi-finals draw for the 200 points-up format, had Curdridge’s Brian Bull (receive +85) verses 2013-2014 winner Derek Fry (receive +80), and two first time semi-finalists, Gwen Gamblin (receive +130) up against Hamble’s Paul Knights (receive +80).
Derek and Brian played on the faster, tighter table number 1, and to start with, showed some final night nerves, as some pots and in-offs they normally stroke in with ease went amiss. But as they found their range, they both played some fine shots in the middle section of the game. Fry however was in no mood to give up the chance to play in the final for the second time in three years and won by 200-135, thanks in part to a 19 break.
On the other table Gwen was reveling in the playing conditions and played some wonderful cannons and pots. Her 50-point handicap advantage helped as well, but she kept Paul from getting into his normal flowing stride. Paul came back in the middle section of the game to give his spectators some hope, but Gwen closed the game out, winning by 200-153.
So for the first time in the Southampton and District Billiards and Snooker Association’s history we had a female player in the final of a major competition – well done Gwen. The game started well with both players playing freely, scoring some excellent in-offs and cannons. Gwen kept her handicap advantage until the mid 140s but Fry was closing in, and made a 13 break to remain in contention. It was nip and tuck in the last 30 points but Fry made a 15 unfinished to win his second championship in three years by 200-180. Congratulations Derek and Gwen!

Curdridge's Nick Alford wins the
2015 Stuart Hamper Individual
Billiards Challenge
Churchills Eastleigh, Wednesday 22 April
Curdridge's Nick Alford made it two wins in two years for the Curdridge billiards team, after compatriot Derek Fry's win last season, as he beat Park Gate's Paul Tavender in the final held at Churchills Eastleigh.
The semi finals, played on the same evening, paired Alford against Totton Rec's billiards veteran Tony Aldridge and Tavender squared up against fellow Park Gate team player and captain Chris Pullen.
Pullen (receive +130), who beat Daniel Zagaroli in the quarter-finals, kept his handicap advantage over Tavender (receive +55) well into the game. But thanks to some near misses from Pullen, clawed his way back to trail by only 40 odd points. Pullen looked set to win, requiring three to reach the required 200 points mark, but unfortunately played his opponents ball for a two point penalty! Tavender took advantage and made a fine 22 break under pressure and eventually won, leaving his friend stranded on 197. Hard luck Chris!
In the other semi, Alford (receive +85), who beat Totton's Steve Allen in the quarter finals, started well against Aldridge (receive +30) and led by 50 for most of the game. Aldridge however showed why he has won multiple billiards titles with Pot Black Snooker Club and numerous other teams over the years, by playing some fine cannons across the table to claw his way back. Alford made runs of 19 and 20, but Aldridge responded with a 33 break and a 21 to leave himself on 198. Alford held his nerve though and fell over the line for a memorable win to put himself within touching distance of the title.
The final pitted the wits of two original snooker players, who are finding they love the three ball game more than the congested free for all that the former game brings! Both players struggled somewhat on the faster, tighter number one table at Churchills, but still treated the spectators to some exciting, nerve jangling play.
Alford played some fine in-offs, but looked nervous in the early stages, missing some simple shots at the top-of-the-table. Tavender made a fine 34 break, and along with mixing his consistent potting with two wonderful 'short jennies' in a row into the left hand middle pocket, clawed his way back from the handicap advantage in favour of Alford.
As the game neared its conclusion, both players started to play some great cannons and in-offs, but Tavender missed a couple of relatively easy pots to let Alford in with some coolly taken in-offs to eventually win by 200-179. The late Stuart Hamper, who played for Curdridge, would be proud to see a second Curdridge player lift the trophy in two years. Well done Nick!

Fry’s Curdridge Delight at winning the Stuart Hamper Challenge!
2013-2014 Stuart Hamper Individual Billiards Handicap Challenge Cup – SEMI FINALS AND FINAL
PLAYED ON WEDNESDAY 16 APRIL 2014 AT CHURCHILLS EASTLEIGH
The late Stuart Hamper was a fantastic billiards inspiration to all that knew him at the Curdridge RBL club where he played for the billiards team, and he helped the new players hone their skills in preparation for playing in the Southampton Billiards League. When Curdridge’s Derek Fry made his way to Churchill’s Eastleigh for the semi finals and final of The Stuart Hamper Billiards Challenge, he knew he had to win the trophy named after his teammate.
In the first of the two semi finals, last season’s semi finalist Steve Cottrell (Hamble Social – rec +40) drew teammate Rob Shattock (Hamble Social – rec +95), a previous winner of the individual handicap, first to 200 points tournament. In the other semi Chris Christodoulou (Park Gate RBL – rec +85) was pitted against Fry (Curdridge RBL – rec +95), a losing finalist in 2012.
Cottrell made breaks of 16 and 14 to show his intent but could not make a major inroad into the 55-point handicap deficit that separated him from Shattock and trailed by 142-122. Shattock then made what was to be a decisive break of 17 to lead by 181-161, and eventually win by a close 200-183.
Fry played fluently against Christodoulou to lead by 40 but back came Christodoulou, narrowly missing a pot red off of the top spot due to a ‘kick’! Fry replied with a timely 21 break to lead 193-120, and after Christodoulou scored another 17 points, finished the match to win by 200-137.
The final, played on the tighter ‘billiard’ suited table number one, had Shattock breaking-off with the white ball. His first five visits were unfortunately non-scoring as Fry made breaks of 9 and 15, with three other red scoring strokes to lead by 128-85. Shattock then found some rhythm and scored 41 points with various shots, during which Fry replied with 14 break and numerous smaller runs.
Shattock then double-baulked Fry, who played a ‘miss’ to give his opponent the 2-point penalty. Fry then scored 7 but fouled by missing the object balls completely! Shattock played from the re-spotted red and yellow balls, and later made a 12 break and an 8 to give the Hamble spectators hope. Fry responded however by making a fine 19 and a game winning 7 to win by 200-161, to give his supporters the victory Stuart would have been so happy to see. Well-done Derek on his first SDBSA singles title!

SEMI FINALS AND FINAL
TO BE PLAYED ON THE SAME EVENING AT CHURCHILLS EASTLEIGH
DATE TBA

DRAW TO BE ADVISED
SEMI FINALS AND FINAL
TO BE PLAYED ON THE SAME EVENING AT CHURCHILLS EASTLEIGH
DATE TBA
Chandlers Ford Central's Daniel Zagaroli wins the Stuart Hamper Individual Billiards Handicap Challenge Cup at Churchills Eastleigh
The four semi finalists from left to right: Terry Azor (Chandlers Ford Central), Steve Cottrell (Hamble Social), Daniel Zagaroli (Chandlers Ford Central) and Mike Kunzi (Totton Rec)
Daniel Zagaroli (-160 handicap – Chandlers Ford Central) has won the inaugural Stuart Hamper Memorial Challenge Individual Billiards Handicap Cup (formerly the Ken Sydenham Trophy, Stuart Hamper was a respected billiards player for Curdridge RBL), beating team mate Terry Azor (-80 handicap) in the semi final, and Mike Kunzi (-5 handicap – Totton Rec) in the final of the 200 up tournament
The draw paired Zagaroli with his team captain and friend Azor, on the tighter of the two Churchill’s tables, but they both served up a fine spectacle of billiards. Zagaroli kicked off with a 9-hazard break of 45 but Azor responded with a fine 69 to keep his handicap advantage
Zagaroli then found his rhythm and helped by runs of 30, 60 (to put him 46 on the board), 41, 31 and 37, left him requiring 1 point for the game! He drew his cue back from his cue ball on a side cushion and inexplicably caught the cue ball with his cue to give away a two-point foul!
Azor had the balls re-spotted, and with him requiring 79 points for a miraculous one point win, compiled a wonderful 49, and then unfortunately missed his trade mark long in-off, to give Zagaroli the opportunity to play a lovely screw in-off red into a middle pocket for a famous 200-170 win
On the other table, Parkstone based billiards aficionado Kunzi played Hamble Social's improving Steve Cottrell (+65 handicap) in the other semi final and made breaks of 20, 33, 20 and 30 to win by 200-167, and a first final appearance
The final was played on the tighter table and witnessed Zagaroli continue where he left off from the semi final. He made a 10-hazard break of 34 with his third visit to the table, a 25 and 14 hazard break of 45 (breaking down in perfect top-of-the-table position) to show his intent
Kunzi could not quite reach his fantastic form of previous league matches and had to stand and watch Zagaroli make further breaks of 55, 27 (9 hazards) and a superb 61. Kunzi responded with a 22 at the death but could not stop Zagaroli making a 20 unfinished for a memorable 200-121 victory. Well played Daniel!

HYTHE’S CROTTY WINS BILLIARD TITLE AGAIN
Hythe Social’s Wayne Crotty has won the Southampton Billiard Leagues prestigious Ken Sydenham Individual Handicap Billiards Trophy for the second time at Churchill’s Eastleigh
He was drawn against Woolston Cons Mike Thatcher in one semi final and had to give away 135 points start to his opponent. Thatcher (receiving +90) started off well but Crotty (receiving -45) responded with a 10 ‘hazard’ break of 38 and followed this with runs of 25, 20, 29 and 22
Thatcher neared the 160-point mark in the 200 points up game, but just as it looked as if the Hythe player would fall he compiled a superb 53 break to help him win by 200-168
In the other semi, Curdridge compatriots Brian Bull and Derek Fry met. Brian, receiving a handicap of +85, is one of the leagues most improved players in the past couple of years – thanks in part to his late teammate Stuart Hamper’s coaching. But it was the experienced Fry, who is on a +105 handicap, who reached the winning line by 200-177
The final had Fry playing fluently and leaving Crotty behind as he neared the 150-point mark. Crotty’s grit and determination shone through though as he made a 36 and 29 to draw closer. Fry responded and required 13 for game at 187, but Crotty was not to be denied as he coolly made a 31 ‘unfinished’ break to deservedly win the match 200-187!
