Usher Cup Team Handicap 2018-2019 Final
St Denys Cons and Hamble Social battle it out in a final to match last seasons drama!
The Southampton Billiards League 2018-2019 Usher Cup Team Handicap final was played between reigning champions Hamble Social and St Denys Cons at Totton Rec. And it turned out to be as exciting a finish as the previous season’s final, when Hamble pipped Churchills Eastleigh by a nail-biting four points in the last game!
The tournament format sees a five player team playing one game each, playing off of their own individual league handicap, in a first to 200 point game. The team with the most points scored at the end of the five games wins the match. A sure spell for twists and turns right up to the last game then!..
The first pairing to play was St Denys Cons’ Malcolm Willis verses Hamble’s Paul Knights. And Knights proved a worthy match starter, as he won by 30 points, 200-170 to give his team an early advantage in the total points scored format. Hamble’s Rob Shattock could not have asked for a better personal game in the next pairing, as he beat Chris Bishop 200-144, despite Bishop making a 31 break. This gave Hamble a healthy 86 point lead, 400 to 314 going into the third pairing.
But St Denys Cons' Andy Carter had other ideas as he proved decisive by beating Hamble’s Nick Wood by a match changing 99 points, 200-101, bringing the aggregate score to 514 to 501 in St Deny’s favour. In the fourth game, Cons' captain Mark Emm sensed the chance to go for the jugular, as he beat Mark Spridgeon by 21 points, 200-179, to extend his team’s aggregate points lead to 34 points, 714 to 680.
The last match-deciding pairing pitched St Deny’s Derek King up against Hamble’s captain Will Mildenhall. King was required to score 167 points to win the overall aggregate. Well, he was not to be denied, as he duly reached the required 167 mark, although Mildenhall went on to win 200-172. It handed his team a superb cup victory by a nail-biting 6 points over the 1000 points on offer, 886 to 880, to leave Hamble knowing how Churchills felt last season. A great final and well done St Denys Cons!

Words from host Tony Aldridge - Final at Totton Rec, Wednesday 17 April 7.30pm
A good start by Hamble, taking the first two tables and Chris Bishop putting in a 31 break. The next two up proved to be a lengthy affair and the match probably hinge on an unfortunate miscue by Nick Wood, letting his opponent Andy Carter in, for a 99 point win. This left Derek King with a target of 167 which he duly completed with a Mid-table pot red to the top left hand pocket.

Usher Cup Team Handicap Final 2017-2018
Hamble Social and Churchills Eastleigh play out a final to remember!
The Southampton Billiards League Usher Team Handicap Billiards Cup final went down to the last game in probably the most dramatic team billiards finale ever witnessed. Held at Park Gate Royal British Legion, last season’s runners-up Churchills Eastleigh faced-off against Hamble Social on some excellent tables, which helped to create a superbly competitive final.
The five players, first to 200 points, individual handicap format competition, started in fine fashion with Churchill’s Mike Adams (+120) pipping Hamble’s Will Mildenhall (+75) by only 6 points, 200-194. Hamble’s Mark Spridgeon (+65) then beat Churchill’s Peter Green (+95) by 200-172 to give his team the total points aggregate advantage at 394 to 372.
Next up was Churchill’s Dave Baker (+50) verses Tony Spridgeon (+65). Spridgeon made a fine 30 break in the early stages, but back came Baker to win by 200-188. That made the aggregate 582 to Hamble and 572 to Churchills. The fourth pairing put Hamble in control, as Hamble’s Nick Wood (+0) played well to overcome Churchill’s Simon Green (+95) by 200-128, making breaks of 39 and 32 to give his team the advantage, 782 points to 700 going into the final game.
Hamble’s Paul Knights (+60) had to reach 119 points for his team to take the title, and Derek Foster had to play the game of his season to give Churchills any chance of going one better than last year. Foster started in imperious fashion and continued some fine positional play to look as if he could create the impossible. But Knights kept his nerve to play some welcome pots and in-offs to move him closer to his target.
Foster closed in on the 200 points winning line with Knights still requiring another 15 to get to 119. But Knights got to 119 as Foster went on to win by 200-122, and fall an agonisingly close four points short on the total aggregate score 900-904! Well done to Hamble Social on a superb victory and a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Usher Cup Team Handicap Semi-finals 2017-2018
Churchills and Hamble to face-off in the final
Churchills Eastleigh made it two final appearances in two years as they pipped Chandlers Ford Central by only 22 points in the semi-final of the Usher Team Handicap Cup, and Hamble narrowly beat league champions St Denys Cons by only 24 points over the 1000 points on offer!
Chandlers Ford started strongly with Daniel Zagaroli making 6 breaks over 30 to beat Peter Green by 200-166, and in the next pairing captain Terry Azor made a 54 and 38 to pip Simon Green by 200-189. But back came Churchills with Dave Baker beating Graham Hollick by 200-162 to leave the team aggregate points total beautifully poised at 562 to 555 in Chandler's favour.
Churchill's Derek Foster started well against in-form John Mullane by making a 44 break, but the highlight of the evening was served up next, with Mullane making a magnificent 154 to go with an earlier 88 to give Chandlers Ford the advantage. Foster had other ideas though as he made a 38 and held on for a fine win by 200-166.
With the aggregate at 728 to 755 now in Churchill's favour, Mike Adams had to reach the magic score of 174 against Korbin Lowe. Lowe however pipped the Eastleigh newcomer by 200-195, but Adams had done enough to send his team into the final for the second time in two years by the team aggregate score of 950 to 928.
It was a similar story out at Hamble Social as they faced off against newly crowned league champions St Denys Cons. Will Mildenhall got Hamble off to a great start by beating Ade Bridger by 200-187, but back came St Denys with Andy Carter making a 46 break during his nail-biting 200-198 win over Paul Knights. Hamble’s Tony Spridgeon then overcame Mark Emm (30 break) by a another slender margin of 200-197!
Hamble’s Nick Wood made a fine 53 break to beat Derek King by 200-183 and give his team the aggregate points total advantage by 798 to 767. Hamble’s Rob Shattock duly delivered in the last game by getting to 193 points to Chris Bishop’s 200 (35 break) to win the team aggregate by only 24 points, 991 to 967!
The final is at Park Gate RBL next Wednesday 11 April at 7.30pm. All spectators welcome

Mick Kunzi makes a magnificent league maiden 104 at Churchills, but which team won through!...
Totton's Mick Kunzi made a magnificent maiden century in the Southampton Billiard league's Usher Team Cup first round match with Churchills Eastleigh, and decalred "the drinks are on me"!
The amazing 104 was also joined with a 37 break during his 200-149 victory over Churchill's Simon Green, who fought back valiantly. Churchills Derek Foster (31 break) had a great tussle with Tony Aldridge, eventually triumphing 200-171. This left the total team points aggregate total in favour of Totton, and after Peter Green's 200-179 win against Steve Allen (43 break) left the score at 549-550 to Totton!
Totton's Lee Fitzpatrick led Churchill's Dave Baker by over 40 points going into the last 30 points but Baker made a 39 unfinished break to win a remarkable match 749-729 with Totton only able to field four players.
Hamble Social had a fine 989-753 victory over visitors Park Gate RBL. It could have been very different though as Park Gate's Paul Tavender (44 break) beat Hamble's Mark Spridgeon 200-189. That was Gate's only success though as Will Mildenhall overcame Paul Lawrence (35 and 34 breaks) 200-157, Rob Shattock beat Ian Finch 200-105, Nick Wood (38 and 37 breaks) overcame Chris Pullen 200-171 and Tony Spridgeon beat Steve Boterhoek 200-120.
Chandlers Ford Central cruised through to the semis as they crushed Curdridge RBL 996-890. Winners for Chandlers were Daniel Zagaroli, in magestic form again, (30, 31, 40, 60, 64, 87 breaks) against Rob Smith 200-185, Terry Azor chipping in (56, 31, 42, 47, 34 breaks) against Brian Bull 200-171, Korbin Lowe against Richard Marshall 200-172 and Graham Hollick over Derek Fry 200-162. Curdridge's Clive Gamblin saved his team's blushes as he beat Mike Thatcher by four points 200-196.

Totton Rec win the Usher Cup Team Billiards final
in a thrilling final game
Shirley Cons, Wednesday 11 May 2016
Totton Rec have won the Usher Team Billiards Handicap Cup after beating Park Gate RBL in a thrilling final game decider at Shirley Cons.
The match started well for Totton as Lee Fitzpatrick (receive +75), fresh from his billiards doubles final success with Tony Aldridge, made a 36 break to help beat Park Gate’s improving Ian Finch (receive +60) 200-119. This gave Totton an 81-point advantage in the total points scored format final.
Park Gate were trying to win the trophy for the third year in a row. A feat that has never been completed so expectations were great The second game had Paul Lawrence (receive +20) facing Totton’s Mick Kunzi (receive -60), a repeat of the Senior Billiards quarter final clash. Lawrence played fluently in the first 15 minutes to keep his handicap advantage but back came Kunzi, making breaks of 32, 34 and 36, made up of some fine long in-offs and cannons. However Lawrence held his nerve and eventually won by 200-169. The aggregate score was now at 369 to 319 to Totton.
So Park Gate were still down on the aggregate points total, but were finding the form that helped them achieve second place in the Southampton billiards league. Park Gate's captain Chris Pullen (receive +120) then beat Brian Cannons (receive +110) by 200-168 to leave the aggregate arrears to 519 to 537 in Totton’s favour.
In the penultimate pairing, Park Gate’s Paul Tavender (receive +20) kept tabs with Tony Aldridge (receive +55) but eventually lost by a nail biting six points, 200-194. This left the team aggregate points total wonderfully poised at 713 to Park Gate and 737 to Totton.
The last game between Totton’s Steve Allen (receive -50) and Park Gate’s Chris Christodoulou (receive +60) had both players giving their all to win the prestigious trophy. They treated the audience to some fine scoring shots and some nervous misses – acceptable under the circumstances!
Just as it looked as if Christodoulou was going to give his team the win, Allen found his form and made a 36 break, and went on to gain the required 176 points to win the match and then nudged his way to a 200-195 points game win, for a team aggregate points win by 937 to 908. Well done to both teams for a wonderfully exciting final evening.

PARK GATE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION WIN 2013-2014 Usher Team Handicap Trophy
Congratulations go to Park Gate Royal British Legion who have won Southampton Billiard League’s prestigious Usher Cup Team Billiards Handicap, after defeating Chandlers Ford Central in the final played at Shirley Cons.
Park Gate’s Chris Christodoulou (rec +85) was drawn against Chandler’s captain Terry Azor (rec -100), and started well, as he made a 19 break off of Azor’s break. Azor, not playing on his normal practice table – the table opposite, found it hard to get to grips with the ‘not so true’ second table and ended up losing by 200 points to nil after the handicaps were taken into account.
On the other table, Chandler’s Ray Smith (rec +90) made good progress initially, and having given Park Gate’s Chris Pullen (rec +115) 25 points start, soon caught him up. However, with some encouragement from his teammates, Pullen made a couple of 15 breaks to eventually prevail by 35 points, 200-165.
This was making the team aggregate points total final tough for Chandlers to come back, as they trailed by 235 points after just two games. Park Gate’s Paul Tavender (rec +85) was drawn against Chandler’s Satpal Hans (rec +50). Both players traded a few 15+ breaks and it was nip and tuck until Tavender ran out with a 19 break to win by 15 points, 200-185.
Chandlers Ford’s newcomer Graham Hollick (rec +75) who played some encouraging shots, tried his hardest to stop Paul Lawrence (rec +20), but Lawrence won comfortably in the end 200-144.
Chandler’s Daniel Zagaroli (rec -170) played against Mark Stansmore (rec +75) in the last game, (which was really a ‘dead rubber’ as Park Gate led by too much by then) and treated the watching spectators to a billiards master class as he made breaks of 63, 65, 33, and a 53 unfinished to beat his opponent, who played well himself, by 25 points. Well done to Park Gate!

TOTTON REC'S TERRIFIC USHER
CUP WIN!
Totton Rec has won the prestigious Usher Team Billiards Handicap Cup, beating Churchill's Eastleigh in the final played at Totton Rec
The individual handicap, five man team, first to 200 points, total team aggregate format competition, had Totton's Josh Barnes (receive +80) drawn out against Mike Henstredge (receive +95) first. Both players kept pace with each other up until the 150 mark, but an inspired Barnes made a break of 34 and 16 to win by 200-172
Table two played host to Churchill's Dave Baker (receive +55) and Totton's Tony Aldridge (receive +40), and it didn't take long for both to play some fine in-offs and cannons. Baker took the lead by 40 points only to see his opponent make a fine 38 to draw level. The last thirty points were a cagey affair with Aldridge triumphing 200-178. This had Totton leading on the aggregate by 50 points – a good advantage going into the third game
Totton's Dorset player Mike Kunzi (receive -5) from Parkstone, pitted his skills against Petersfield's billiards maestro Derek Foster (receive +15). Both showed their classy skills in the all-round game, but Kunzi was keeping in front with some top-of-the-table time. In the end he managed to construct two breaks of 30+ to win by 200-134
The fourth pairing had Churchill's Paul Adams (receive -105) giving away a 225 points start to Brian Cannons (receive +120). By this time Totton was leading the overall aggregate score by 600 to 484 – a mammoth lead. Totton's Cannons played some fine in-offs but was missing some pots to let Adams acclimatise to the Totton table. He made a break of 48 to go with three runs of 20+, but Cannons still led by a large margin. Then with Cannons requiring 20 odd for the game, Adams compiled a wonderful break of 97, when requiring 114 to run out, and won the tie 200-186
Totton's captain Steve Allen (receive -50) could see he only had to play his 'normal' game for his side to take the trophy. However he drew Churchill's Simon Green (receive +85), who had beaten the Totton man on the past two occasions! Green kept up with Allen to the three quarter mark but the Totton captain was not to be outdone, as he won by 200-166 for an overall team victory of 986-850 and a first Usher Cup win for his side. Well done Totton!

CHURCHILLS' STUNNING WIN OVER SARISBURY
Southampton Billiard league champions Churchill’s Eastleigh welcomed current Usher Cup Team Handicap Cup holders Sarisbury Social in one semi final of the total team points scored competition
Sarisbury started superbly with captain John Oldfield (+10) making a 40 break in leading Mark Adams (+100). Adams fought back but could not stop Oldfield winning 200-161. Sarisbury showed their wonderful billiard knowledge as Dave Leeworthy (+20) made a fine 41 break and numerous 20s as he led Derek Foster (+20) 180-100. Foster summoned all his skills to make a 41 of his own at the death, to narrow the point’s deficit, but Leeworthy proved a worthy winner by 200-159
With Churchill’s number one Paul Adams standing down (after Churchill’s won against Bitterne RBL in the quarter finals without him), Simon Green (+85) stepped into the fray against the awesome knowledge and skill of Stan Pitts (+20). In a tense game, Green played one of the best games of his billiard career to lead. Pitts however showed his skill (I remember watching him at 147 Executive Club in the early 80s making a break of over 180) to claw back the game. Green responded and eventually won by 200-157. Sarisbury were now winning the tie 557-520 – a healthy 37 point advantage with two games to go
Norman Bradfield (+30), fresh from his fine win over Paul Adams in the league match the week before, faced Dave Baker (+60). Bradfield however was on the opposite table from his previous game – and quipped that 'I've never liked this table!’ It didn't stop him from looking as if he would pull away from the improving Baker – who says he, 'always needs twenty minutes to get going!' With both players nearing the last twenty points to go mark, Baker found inspiration and won 200-174
So after two hours of fine match play billiards it was down to the last pairing of Peter Green (+75) and Geoff Knapp (+30), with Sarisbury leading by 11 points on the total aggregate score. Green kept his handicap advantage up to the 110 mark, but Knapp was playing the more fluid of the two and making some fine combination breaks at the top-of-the-table
Green pulled away by twenty, only for Knapp to pull level. The game was getting tenser as they neared the 180 mark, but Green was keeping the gap wider than the 11 points required. At the end we couldn't have dreamed of the outcome. With Green requiring 8 points for game, but not enough of a gap for the match, he played the wrong cue ball (his opponents white) and gave away a 2-point foul – disaster!
This meant Knapp was on 180 (needing to score 189 for the match). However, Knapp chose not to have the balls 're-spotted' and after scoring 2 points, played the wrong cue ball himself and gave 2 points away as a foul! Ex pilot Wing Commander Green then showed his coolness as he made six for game to leave Knapp stranded on 182, and give Churchill’s the most amazing 920-913 points Usher Cup win for many years

2011-2012 USHER TEAM HANDICAP BILLIARDS CUP
SARISBURY WIN THE USHER TEAM BILLIARDS CUP
Sarisbury Social has won the Southampton Billiard Leagues prestigious Usher Team Handicap Billiards Cup, after a nail biting final against Chandlers Ford Central at Churchill’s Eastleigh!
The match is played with five-players per team who all have individual handicaps trying to reach the 200 point mark. The winners are decided by the total team aggregate points total. The average age of the Sarisbury maestros is 74, so a wonderful achievement against the relative ‘youngsters’ of Chandlers Ford.
Sarisbury started well with Norman Bradfield (rec +30) leading Daniel Zagaroli (rec -145), but Zagaroli made breaks of 59, 42 and 37 to win by 200-161. Sarisbury hit back with Stan Pitts (rec +20) making a 38 and a 30 in beating Mark Shirley (rec +45), who made a 27 break, by 200-158
Chandlers’ Wayne Muddiman (rec +45) led Dave Leeworthy (rec +30) by over 100 points but as the game neared its conclusion, Leeworthy mad a 36 to pip his opponent by 200-195. The game between Chandlers’ captain Terry Azor (rec -75) and Geoff Knapp (rec +35) ebbed and flowed, but Azor’s consistency – making six breaks over 20 and a 32, helped him to a 200-184 win
The last game had Chandlers leading the aggregate points total by 753-745 and Sarisbury’s captain John Oldfield (rec +15) facing Tony Hannam (rec +90). The ‘baby of the bunch’ at 69 was not to be denied as he won by 200-171 to help his team to a memorable 945-924 points victory
