PARK GATE RBL PIP CHANDLERS FORD CENTRAL TO RUNNERS-UP SPOT
2014-2015 Billiards League – FINAL LEAGUE Week 21 – 11 March 2015
Park Gate RBL roared into runners-up spot in the Southampton Billiards league as they leapfrogged Chandlers Ford Central after beating champions Totton Rec 4-2.
It started well for Park Gate as number one Paul Lawrence beat Dan Stone by a nail biting two points 200-198. This was followed by a return to form of Chris Christodoulou as he overcame Lee Fitzpatrick 200-174. But back came the title holders, with Mick Kunzi making a 40 break during his 200-177 win against Paul Tavender.
Totton’s Tony Aldridge squared the match by beating Steve Boterhoek by only six points 200-194 which set up a tantalising last pairing. Park Gate’s newcomer Ian Finch held his nerve to beat Steve Allen and send his teammates home happy after beating the champions.
Park Gate’s closest rivals Chandlers Ford Central’s hopes rested on a trip to Curdridge RBL, but the countryside team ran out comprehensive 5-1 victors. Curdridge’s Clive Gamblin beat Graham Hollick 200-136 in the first game, and that was followed by Rob Smith’s decisive 200-82 win against Terry Azor. Chandler’s Trevor Thorne made a 53 break against Derek Fry but lost out by 200-145, but Chandler’s Ray Smith pulled one back by beating Brian Bull by 200-185. Curdridge’s Nick Alford finished proceedings by overcoming Daniel Zagaroli (60 break) by 200-49.
Shirley’s second place challenge ended at the hands of Sarisbury Social as they went down 4-2. It started well for Shirley as Chris Holland battled to a 200-163 win against fellow billiards league veteran Jeff James. Sarisbury’s Geoff Knapp squared the match by beating Mike Thatcher and Norman Bradfield consolidated his team’s lead by overcoming Adrian Bridger 200-164.
Sarisbury’s John Oldfield beat Malcolm Willis 200-145 to set up a last game decider, with the aggregate at 763 to 681 in Sarisbury’s favour. Shirley’s Keith Castle’s played well to beat Doug Scott but could not quite overturn the team aggregate points total as Sarisbury won it by a slender 18 points, 899-881.
The basement battle between home team Churchills Eastleigh and Hamble Social ended with a welcome 4-2 victory for Hamble, although it could not prevent them from receiving the wooden spoon. Churchill’s Derek Foster started assuredly against Rob Shattock by making breaks of 49 and 33 but Shattock came back with a fine 27 break at the death to win by 200-185.
Churchill’s Mike Henstredge squared the match by pipping Tony Spridgeon by one point 200-199. Hamble’s Will Mildenhall then overcame Dave Baker by 200-152. Churchill’s Paul Adams made a 48 break but could not stop a determined Steve Cottrell from winning 200-145 but Churchill’s Peter Green made a fine 36 unfinished break to beat Ben Spencer 200-169.

TOTTON REC WIN 2014-2015 BILLIARDS CHAMPIONSHIP IN STYLE!
2014-2015 Billiards League – Week 20 – 4 March 2015
Totton Rec, who led the Southampton Billiards league from week one back in October 2014, have won the title in style with one week to go, after beating Hamble Social 6-0.
Totton's Dan Stone gave his team the perfect start as he beat Rob Shattock by 41 points, and that was followed by Mike Kunzi's 32 break during his 18-point victory over Steve Cottrell (32 break). Lee Fitzpatrick then consolidated Totton's advantage as he overcame Tony Spridgeon by 41 points.
This set up the performance of the evening, as Totton's captain and number one Steve Allen made breaks of 51, 42, 36 and a 41 unfinished, as he played with freedom against an admiring Will Mildenhall, who was left stranded on 97 points. The last pairing had Totton's Tony Aldridge (31 break) put the icing on the cake with a 24 points win over Ben Spencer.
Totton have dealt with their individual handicaps adjustments superbly. As they won match after match in the early weeks, everyone expected them to struggle to stay on top, and apart from a slight wobble where the lost three games 5-1 over the past few weeks, they have remained strong. They confounded their critics and with the help of Aldridge, Allen and Kunzi to usher the newcomers along, they are worthy Southampton Billiards league winners – well done Totton Rec!
So with one week to go the battle for second and third place is still in the balance.
Sarisbury Social put paid to Chandlers Ford Central’s chance to retain their title from last season, as they beat them 4-2 at home. Sarisbury’s Geoff Knapp (31 and 33) decisively beat Daniel Zagaroli (47 break) by 105 points but Chandler’s Trevor Thorn squared the match by overcoming Kas Remzi by only two points.
Sarisbury’s multi billiard singles title winning Jeff James then beat Terry Azor (43 and 47) by 99 points to all but extinguish Chandler’s title dreams. Chandler’s Ray Smith fought back valiantly to beat John Oldfield by 95 points, but Sarisbury’s Norman Bradfield secured the win by overcoming Graham Hollick.
Third Placed Park Gate RBL gained two points on Chandlers by beating visitors Curdridge RBL 4-2. Park Gate’s Paul Lawrence made a 37 break during his win over Nick Alford. And Steve Boterhoek beat Clive Gamblin to make it 2-0. Park Gate’s Paul Tavender beat Derek Fry to set up the possibility of a clean sweep. But back came Curdridge, as they took the last two pairings, with Rob Smith beating Chris Christodoulou and Brian Bull pipping captain Chris Pullen by 200-199!
Churchill’s Eastleigh visited the fine tables of Shirley Cons and went 1-0 down thanks to an inspired game from Keith Castles. He played one of the best games of his season, as he beat Mark Adams by 75 points. Churchill’s levelled thanks to Peter Green’s 50-point victory over Chris Holland but Shirley’s Mike Thatcher decisively beat Dave Baker by 68 points to lead the aggregate.
Churchill’s Paul Adams made a 65 break in beating Malcolm Willis by a close 11 points to set up an intriguing last pairing. Churchill’s Mike Henstredge was up to the task, as he beat an out of form Mark Emm by 58 points. But it was not quite enough, as Shirley ran out aggregate winners by 881 to 853 to draw 3-3.

TOP THREE BILLIARD TEAMS LOSE OUT TO THE UNDERDOGS
2014-2015 Billiards League – Week 19 – 25 February 2015
All three top teams in the Southampton Billiards league lost to lower placed opposition, as the pressure starts to build with only two weeks to go until the end of the league season.
Churchills Eastleigh had a superb result as they beat second placed Chandlers Ford Central 5-1. Churchill’s Derek Foster made breaks of 48 and 41 in beating Ray Smith in the first game, and this was followed by Simon Green’s win over Chandler’s Terry Azor. Churchills Dave Baker then overcame Trevor Thorn to give his side a 3-0 lead.
Chandlers Ford’s Daniel Zagaroli checked his team’s slide by making breaks of 41, 49, and 32 against Paul Adams to lead by nearly 180. Adams responded by making a fine 73 but could not stop an on fire Zagaroli from reaching the 200 points mark. The total team points aggregate score however was finely poised at 709 to 702 in Chandler’s favour. Churchill’s Peter Green was up to the task as he sealed the victory by beating Graham Hollick.
Curdridge RBL had an equally inspiring 5-1 win over table-toppers and visitors Totton Rec. Curdridge’s Clive Gamblin (30 break) got his team off to a flyer by beating Totton’s number one Steve Allen (30 break). And that was followed by a nail biting finish to Rob Smith’s three-point win over Totton’s Mike Kunzi.
Brian Bull consolidated Curdridge’s lead by beating Lee Fitzpatrick, and Curdridge’s Nick Alford sealed the victory by overcoming Dan Stone. It looked as if a 6-0 whitewash was on the cards, but Totton’s Tony Aldridge drew on his 55 years of playing in the Southampton leagues, to pip Derek Fry by a solitary point and save his team’s blushes.
Sarisbury Social joined the clean sweep of top three scalps as they ran out 5-1 victors over visitors Park Gate RBL. But it could have been all so different, as Park Gate’s Paul Tavender beat Jeff James by only five points in the first pairing, and then Sarisbury’s Geoff Knapp (33 break) overcame Chris Pullen by only two points.
Sarisbury’s Norman Bradfield then beat Chris Christodoulou to give his team a 2-1 lead. Sarisbury’s captain John Oldfield overcame Ian Finch to extend their lead and Kas Remzi secured the victory by beating Paul Lawrence.
So with only two matches to go, the championship still hangs in the balance, with Totton Rec, Chandlers Ford Central and Park Gate RBL and even fourth placed Shirley Cons all in with a chance to claim the prestigious crown – watch this space!...
Late result. Shirley Cons visited Hamble Social, who unfortunately could only field four players, and won 5-1.

SHIRLEY SHOCK TOTTON TO BLOW LEAGUE TITLE RACE WIDE OPEN AND AZOR RUNS OUT OF POINTS!
2014-2015 Billiards League – Week 18 – 18 February 2015
Shirley Cons produced a sensational performance to beat title favourites and leaders Totton Rec 5-1, to blow the title race wide open with three weeks to go. The result allowed second placed Chandlers Ford Central to gain ground after they beat Hamble Social 5-1.
Shirley's Keith Castle's played a blinder as he restricted Totton's Brian Cannons to only 127 points, but Totton's Mike Kunzi played just as well to overcome Adrian Bridger by 69 points.
Shirley's Mike Thatcher is finding form as he beat Lee Fitzpatrick, and Chris Holland (32 break) made it 3-1 after victory against Steve Allen (37 break).
This set up a last frame tussle between Totton's Tony Aldridge and Shirley's Mark Emm. Emm made a 36 break to win by 68 points and take the team aggregate score 931 to 796.
The other headline this week must surely go to Chandlers Ford Central's captain Terry Azor. After the disappointment of not qualifying for the later stages of the English Amateur Billiards Championship, and then finding out he had qualified as the best losing player in qualifying, because of a winning player dropping out, he ran riot against Hamble's newbie Ben Spencer. Azor compiled runs of 47, 44, 36 and a mesmerising 120 unfinished, to take the season's highest break so far from compatriot John Mullane! John and Terry are playing in the English Amateur Championship at Clay Cross, Derbyshire this weekend in the last 16, down to 8 and then down to 4 on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 February – we wish them good skill (and a touch of luck!).
Other winners for Chandlers were Daniel Zagaroli against Rob Shattock, making breaks of 40, 56, 81 and 36. John Mullane (70 break) verses Will Mildenhall (36 break), and Graham Hollick via a walkover, as Hamble unfortunately could only field four players. Hamble's 'Lone Ranger' was Tony Spridgeon who beat Trevor Thorn (56 break) by a narrow eight points.
Curdridge RBL welcomed Sarisbury Social and went 1-0 down in the first game, thanks to Salisbury's improving Kas Remzi's eight-point win over Rob Smith. Curdridge's Clive Gamblin (32 break) then restored parity by beating Norman Bradfield by six points. Curdridge's Brian Bull gave his team the lead by overcoming John Oldfield by eight points – so the aggregate was poised at 592 to 586.
Curdridge's Derek Fry then turned the aggregate in his team's favour, by comprehensively beating Geoff Knapp by 98 points. Sarisbury's Doug Scott gave his team their second point by pipping Gwen Gamblin by nine points, but the aggregate had gone 888 to 983 to lose 4-2.
Park Gate RBL welcomed Churchills Eastleigh and saw the first two games shared, as Churchill's Derek Foster pipped newcomer Ian Finch, in a great game, by only three points. Churchill's Paul Adams made a fine 78 break (again in prime top-of-the-table position when breaking down), but could not stop a determined Chris Christodoulou mixing some fine cannons and potting to win by 44 points.
Park Gate's Paul Tavender overcame Peter Green by a narrow 15 points, but son Simon Green fought back by overcoming Park Gate's Paul Lawrence by 35 points. Park Gate's Chris Pullen kept his handicap advantage throughout his game with Dave Baker to win by 37 points, and take the match 4-2.

SHIRLEY CONS END CHANDLERS FORD CENTRAL'S RUN
2014-2015 Billiards League – Week 17 – 11 February 2015
Shirley Cons had a fine 4-2 victory over current champions Chandlers Ford Central in the Southampton Billiards league.
Shirley's Mike Thatcher got his team off to the perfect start by beating Graham Hollick but Chandlers' Daniel Zagaroli hit back by making breaks of 51, 62 and a 50 unfinished, to reach the required 200 points, against Keith Castles who was left stranded on 182.
Adrian Bridger made it 2-1 to Shirley after overcoming Ray Smith 200-187 but back came Chandlers again, as John Mullane was in consistent form, making runs of 44, 62, 52, 67 and a 47 unfinished against Mark Emm. This set up the last game decider with the total team aggregate score poised at 722-724 in Chandlers favour. Shirley's Malcolm Willis did not disappoint as he comprehensively beat Terry Azor 200-19 to take the aggregate and match.
Churchills Eastleigh stopped their slide into mediocrity by beating visiting Curdridge RBL 5-1. Winners in the first two games for Churchills were Derek Foster (33) against Dave Fry and Mark Adams over Derek Fry. Churchill's Dave Baker was welcomed back after a three-week break and duly served up a 200-185 win over Clive Gamblin. Churchill's Paul Adams (31 break) was over 200 points behind with Trevor Harris potting superbly, but managed to claw his way back to only lose by 200-166. Peter Green wrapped up proceedings by beating Nick Alford 200-162.
Sarisbury Social welcomed leaders Totton Rec and lost 4-2 to the champions elect. Winners for Totton were Steve Allen (45 and 37), Lee Fitzpatrick and Brian Cannons verses John Oldfield, Norman Bradfield and Kas Remzi. Sarisbury winners were Jeff James over Tony Aldridge and Geoff Knapp (31 and 37) against an unfortunate Mike Kunzi who made breaks of 50 and a fine 15 hazzard 44!
Hamble Social unfortunately could only field four players against visiting Park Gate RBL and went down 5-1. Winners for Park Gate were Paul Tavender, Paul Lawrence and Steve Boterhoek over Will Mildenhall, Steve Cottrell and Ben Spencer. Hamble's winner was Tony Spridgeon against Chris Christodoulou.

BATTLE OF BILLIARDS TOP TEAMS ENDS IN A CENTURY!
2014-2015 Billiards League – Week 16 – 4 February 2015
The match at the top-of-the-table between leaders Totton Rec and current champions and second placed Chandlers Ford Central didn’t disappoint, as Chandlers ran out comprehensive 5-1 winners in the Southampton Billiards league. The result opens the door for Central to try and overhaul Totton with five matches to go.
Chandler’s Graham Hollick cued-off as he beat Brain Cannons by 10 points and Ray Smith made it 2-0 after overcoming Mick Kunzi (30 break) by 12 points. Terry Azor, who failed to qualify at the English Amateur the previous weekend, was in sublime form as he made breaks of 60, followed next visit with a 60, 57 and 34 to beat Totton’s newcomer Dan Stone.
Totton’s Steve Allen stopped the rot by making a 53 and 31 against Daniel Zagaroli who started off superbly with runs of 53 and 79 but could not carry his form to the end of the game. The pièce de résistance was left to the end, as Chandlers Ford's English Amateur qualifier John Mullane made a magical 103 break and a timely 50 unfinished against Tony Aldridge to wrestle the aggregate point by only nine points – phew!
Sarisbury Social had a fine 4-2 win over visitors Churchills Eastleigh. Derek Foster (33 break) was welcomed back after illness and played with a relaxed freedom to beat Dennis Hushley 200-98 and Churchill's Simon Green had a remarkable one-point victory over John Oldfield who was unfortunate to get a ‘kick’ off the balls at the end of the match. Sarisbury's Geoff Knapp overcame Peter Green and an improving Kas Remzi played above his handicap to thrash Churchill's Paul Adams (33 break) by 200-91. Just when it looked as if Churchills might scrape a 3-3 draw, Sarisbury's Norman Bradfield caught Mike Henstredge up in the 180s and finished to give his side victory.
Curdridge RBL had an amazing turnaround in the last game of their match with visitors Hamble Social (who unfortunately could only field four players), as they won the team aggregate point by the closest margin of only one point, 764 to 763, and a 3-3 draw! It started well for Hamble as they won the first two games thanks to Rob Shattock against Gwen Gamblin and Will Mildenhall verses Nick Alford. Curdridge’s
Brian Bull then beat 18-year-old newcomer Ben Spencer who scored his highest total so far, a fine 189 points – that win’s not too far away Ben! It was left to the last game for Curdridge’s Clive Gamblin to beat Tony Spridgeon and then realise that they had won the aggregate, but only just. Curdridge’s Derek Fry beat Nick Wood by default.
Another 3-3 draw unraveled at Park Gate RBL as they welcomed Shirley Cons. Shirley’s Sid Hunt got his team off to the perfect start by overcoming Steve Boterhoek. But Park Gate’s newcomer Ian Finch beat Chris Holland to level. Shirley’s Mike Thatcher restored his team’s lead by beating Chris Christodoulou by 70 points, but Park Gate’s Paul Tavender made it 2-2 by overcoming Keith Castles. This set up a last game decider which turned into a corker, with Shirley’s Malcolm Willis making a 36 break but being pipped by seven points by a resurgent Paul Lawrence. The aggregate had gone though, in Shirley’s favour 951 to 902.

Words from Steve Allen, Totton’s Captain
(1) Brian and Graham had a good tussle, but it was the Chandlers Ford man who came out on top.
(2) Mick and Ray went the same way, Mick was struggling with his form most of the game, but this Ray on 199 he managed to make it look respectable with a run of 30.
(3) Dan & Terry was a different game altogether, Terry was on superb form, making two 60 breaks in consecutive goes, Dan could look on in admiration. Terry commented that it was the best he'd played and which he could have done the same Sunday.
(4) It wasn't looking good for Totton, as Danny was off to a flyer against Steve, with runs of 53 and then 79 he was on the board with 28 points with Steve still requiring nearly 40 point to wipe his minus deficit. That was the point the game changed completely, with Steve coming to life and Danny drying up, with breaks of 31, 53 and numerous 20 Steve ran out clear winner.
(5) Totton had a life line going into the last game with Totton having a 42 point advantage, it all looked good for a classic battle. with Tony and John at the helm. Tony started the better of the two and with Tony into the 120's John still needed 40 odd points to clear his minus figure. Again the game changed with John making a superb 103 break only breaking down by accidently potting his white with the red, which left him an all round cannon as yellow was in bulk, he narrowly missed. Tony still had a few chances to get the 159 point he needed to sneak the aggregate, but alas it wasn't to be with John running out with a 50 unfinished.
This makes it very interesting for the final run in.

SHIRLEY CONS BACK TO WINNING WAYS AGAINST CURDRIDGE RBL
2014-2015 Billiards League – Week 15 – 28 January 2015
Shirley Cons welcomed Curdridge RBL in the Southampton Billiards league and handed out a fine 5-1 victory.
Mike Thatcher got the ball rolling as he beat Clive Gamblin decisively by 200-117. Curdridge bounced back with Nick Alford squeezing home by five points over Keith Castles in the second pairing. This galvanized Shirley into a run of three straight games, as Chris Holland beat Gwen Gamblin, Malcolm Willis overcame Brian Bull, and that left Mark Emm to wrap up proceedings by beating Derek Fry.
Sarisbury Social had a fine 5-1 victory out at Hamble Social. But it could have been all so different as Hamble lost three games by less than 17 points. Sarisbury’s Norman Bradfield beat Rob Shattock by five, Kas Remzi overcame Tony Spridgeon by 10 and Jeff James was victorious by 16 over Ben Spencer. Sarisbury’s Geoff Knapp beat Paul Knights 200-163, which set up a last game between the two captains Will Mildenhall and John Oldfield. The game turned out to be a humdinger, as Oldfield made a 31 break but Mildenhall replied in style making a 31 and 32 to win by 19 points.
Table toppers Totton Rec showed why they are still leading the way after a fine 5-1 win at Churchills Eastleigh – but the match could have also been a reverse scoreline! The first two games went Totton’s way with Lee Fitzpatrick making a fine 29 break (when requiring 32) against an in control Simon Green to win by nine points. And Mike Kunzi made a fine 59 break to only beat a fine showing from Churchill’s Mark Adams by only six points.
Totton’s Brian Cannons played above his handicap to beat Sid Reid by 59 points and Steve Allen made a great 59 and a 31 in overcoming Peter Green. Paul Adams was well behind to his ex-tutor from Pot Black days, Tony Aldridge, but strung together breaks of 33, 31 and 30 to win by 18 to save the whitewash.
The battle at second and third place ended up a 3-3 draw between hosts Chandlers Ford Central and Park Gate RBL. Chandler’s Daniel Zagaroli made runs of 51, 35 and 38 during his win over Paul Lawrence and Terry Azor prepared for his English Amateur last 16 matches on Sunday 1 Feb at Shirley Cons club with a victory against Paul Tavender, making breaks of 39, 57 and 68.
Park Gate came roaring back with wins for Chris Christodoulou decisively against Chandlers other English Amateur qualifier Trevor Thorn, and Steve Boterhoek’s closer victory over Graham Hollick by eight points. Chandler’s Ray Smith played well to beat Chris Pullen but the damage had been done as Park Gate won the aggregate point for the draw.

TOTTON REC'S AMAZING FINISH AGAINST PARK GATE RBL!
2014-2015 Billiards League – Week 14 – 21 January 2015
Southampton Billiard league leaders Totton Rec looked down and out against visitors Park Gate RBL, trailing by three games to one, but they staged a remarkable comeback to draw
3-3, winning the aggregate points total by 823 to 813.
Park Gate’s Chris Pullen got his team off to a flyer as he decisively beat Mike Kunzi 200-126 and Chris Christodoulou made it 2-0 after overcoming Brian Cannons. But back came Totton with captain and number one Steve Allen beating Paul Tavender thanks to a 40 break and a timely 37 unfinished.
Park Gate’s Steve Boterhoek beat Dan Stone to make it 3-1 which left Park Gate’s Paul Lawrence only needing to score 65 points on top of his +30 handicap to secure a 4-2 victory. Totton’s young Lee Fitzpatrick had other ideas though as Steve Allen said, "Totton looked dead and buried. Lee played superbly to win and get the aggregate". Fitzpatrick eventually beat the Park Gate number one by 200-85 to seal the aggregate by only 10 points!
Another 3-3 draw developed at Shirley Cons as they welcomed Sarisbury Social. Shirley took a 2-0 lead thanks to wins for Mike Thatcher over John Oldfield and Keith Castles against Norman Bradfield. But Sarisbury fought back with victories for Kas Remzi over Malcolm Willis and Geoff Knapp against Chris Holland. It was left to Sarisbury’s Jeff James to beat Sid Hunt to secure three points but lose the aggregate point 884 to 919.
Chandlers Ford Central gained one point on leaders Totton Rec thanks to their 4-2 victory over visiting Curdridge RBL. Winners for Chandlers were Daniel Zagaroli (46, 41, 58, 43, 43 breaks) against Nick Alford, Trevor Thorn (31 break) over Brian Bull and Graham Hollick against Gwen Gamblin. Curdridge’s victors were Clive Gamblin against Terry Azor (31, 31, 41, 41, 49 breaks) and Derek Fry in the last pairing against Ray Smith.
Churchills Eastleigh had a fine 4-2 win out at fellow league strugglers Hamble Social. Hamble led with a win for Will Mildenhall, making a fine 41 break, over Simon Green. But Churchill’s responded with Paul Adams making a 43 and 30 to beat Ben Spencer. Hamble's Rob Shattock overcame Peter Green but Sid Reid played superbly to beat Steve Cottrell to level the match. It was left to Churchill Mike Henstredge to overcome Nick Wood to seal the win.

BRITISH LEGION TEAMS SHARE THE SPOILS AND HAMBLE POSTPONE AGAINST TOTTON REC
2014-2015 Billiards League – Week 13 – 10 January 2015
The Southampton Billiards league regrouped after the Christmas festivities and found the two Royal British Legion clubs share the spoils in their 3-3 draw.
Curdridge's Clive Gamblin gave his team the lead after beating Paul Lawrence by only 15 points, and that was after Lawrence made a 37 break, and Derek Fry made it 2-0 after overcoming Chris Christodoulou by 20 points. Park Gate's Paul Tavender found his break building boots by making a fine 45 during his 200-140 win against Nick Alford.
Curdridge's Brian Bull gave his team hope as he beat Chris Pullen by 16 points and that set up the final pairing of Dave Fry and Steve Boterhoek. The aggregate was tantalisingly poised at 740 to 749 in Park Gate's favour. Boterhoek was up to the task for Park Gate as he overcame Fry by 200-164 and took the aggregate 949 to 904.
Chandlers Ford Central stayed in touch with Totton Rec, whom had their match with Hamble Social postponed by Hamble, as they beat out of form Salisbury Social 5-1.
Chandler's John Mullane made breaks of 63, 72 and 73 during his victory over John Oldfield (30 break). Then Ray Smith beat Sarisbury's Norman Bradfield and Chandler's Graham Hollick beat Jeff James for 3-0. Sarisbury's Geoff Knapp gave his team some post Christmas cheer as he beat Trevor Thorn but Terry Azor quashed Sarisbury's hope with a 52 break and a 41 unfinished as he left Kas Remzi stranded on 165 points.
Shirley Cons had a fantastic 5-1 reversal of their loss to Churchills Eastleigh at the start of the season. Shirley's Sid Hunt had his fair share of fortune against Mark Adams, beating the Churchill's man 200-168 but Derek Foster got his own back by overcoming a luckless Mike Thatcher 200-171!
Malcolm Willis played well to overcome Dave Baker by 50 points and although Churchill's Paul Adams made breaks of 53, 32 and 43 against Keith Castles, fell 15 points short after Castles had played a superb wide in-off red, off the top spot to win!
In the last game it looked as if Churchill's Peter Green had played the game of his season, by leading Chris Holland by over 60 in the closing stages of their pairing, to possibly win the aggregate for a 3-3 draw. But Holland showed why he is a multi-title snooker-winning veteran to claw the game back to win by an astonishing two points – wow!

ANOTHER GREAT WIN FOR THE TOTTON BOYS – CAN ANYONE STOP THEM FROM CRUISING TO THE LEAGUE TITLE?!
2014-2015 Billiards League – Week 12 – 17 December 2014
We’re only just past the halfway mark but super Totton Rec are 10 points clear at the top. This week they cruised on to another victory in the Southampton Billiards league, a 5-1 win over visitors Curdridge RBL, but only won the aggregate by a miraculous one point, 885 to 884!
Tony Aldridge felt they had won a "get out of jail free" card. The evening started with a solid performance from Mike Kunzi (44 break) beating the Curdridge lead man Clive Gamblin 200-140. And Totton’s Lee Fitzpatrick held off a late revival by Dave Fry to win 200-172. Next up was Gwen Gamblin as she put the visitors in the Christmas spirit by beating Totton captain Steve Allen by 115 points! Allen had compiled runs of 46 and 38 but could not pull back the handicap deficit of 165 points.
Totton’s Brian Cannons scored steadily to beat Derek Fry 200-187, which set up the last pairing of Tony Aldridge and Brian Bull. Aldridge, boasting 10 wins from 11 games this season, found himself trailing Bull by 46 points. An outrageous, trademark, four cushion cannon from his Pot Black days set Aldridge up for a 43 break and back into the game. Both players scored equally through the closing stages of the game, until Aldridge ran out with a small but decisive break of 16 to win by 15 points, 200-185. Phew!
Chandlers Ford Central stayed in touch in second place after a 6-0 victory over visitors Churchills Eastleigh. Daniel Zagaroli was in blistering break building form as he racked up runs of 44, 50, 42, 38, 33 and 63 during his one sided win over Peter Green! Terry Azor made a 69 and 38 in beating Paul Adams who made a 42 and Ray Smith overcame Derek Foster. Graham Hollick showed no Christmas cheer to Dave Baker as he ran out the winner and Mike Henstredge was the closest to a win for the Eastleigh side, but fell just short by 15 points to Trevor Thorn, who made two 30 breaks.
Salisbury continued their good form, as they beat down the road neighbours Park Gate RBL 4-2. Winners for Salisbury were Norman Bradfield, Jeff James and Geoff Knapp over Chris Pullen, Paul Lawrence and Steve Boterhoek respectively. Park Gate’s yuletide saviours were Chris Christodoulou against John Oldfield and Paul Tavender verses Kas Remzi.
Shirley Cons had a great 4-2 victory over visitors Hamble Social. Hamble’s Rob Shattock got his team off to a good start by beating Mike Thatcher, but Shirley’s Malcolm Willis levelled the match by overcoming Steve Cottrell. Adrian Bridger beat Ben Spencer to give Shirley the lead and Sid Hunt made it 3-1 after beating Will Mildenhall. Hamble's number one Nick Wood made a 30 break to finish the evening by overcoming Keith Castles.

PARK GATE KEEP IN TOUCH WITH TOTTON AND CHANDLERS 'THORN' IN SHIRLEY'S SIDE
2014-2015 Billiards League – Week 10 – 3 December 2014
Park Gate Royal British Legion stayed in touch with leaders Totton Rec after their 5-1 victory over visitors Hamble Social in the Southampton Billiards league.
Park Gate’s Chris Christodoulou cued things off as he beat Tony Spridgeon by a dramatic 200-84 and Steve Boterhoek made it 2-0 by overcoming Will Mildenhall. Chris Pullen wasn’t going to be left out of the party as he beat Hamble’s new recruit Ben Spencer, to leave Hamble well behind on the aggregate.
Unfortunately it got worse as Hamble’s Rob Shattock was a ‘no show’ and gave Park Gate’s Paul Tavender a walkover win. Hamble’s in-form Steve Cottrell saved his team’s blushes by beating Paul Lawrence for their point.
Champions Chandlers Ford Central went on the offensive as they whitewashed Shirley Cons 6-0. Winners for Chandlers were Daniel Zagaroli making breaks of 34 and 62, Terry Azor making runs of 32 and 39, Trevor Thorn compiling a 31, 52 and superb 91, Graham Hollick and Ray Smith verses Adrian Bridger, Mark Emm, Sid Hunt, Mike Thatcher and Malcolm Willis respectively.
Totton Rec got back to winning ways after last week's 5-1 loss to Chandlers Ford Central, with a 6-0 whitewash of Salisbury Social. Victors for Totton were Brian Cannons over John Oldfield, Mike Kunzi who made a 49 break against Geoff Knapp, Lee Fitzpatrick over Kas Remzi, Steve Allen scoring a 39 and 30 against Norman Bradfield and Tony Aldridge over Jeff James.
Churchill Eastleigh stole an unlikely 3-3 draw out at Curdridge RBL. Curdridge’s Clive Gamblin played well to beat Mark Adams but Churchill’s Derek Foster clawed his way back to pip Gwen Gamblin by six points to level. Churchill’s Peter Green then beat Rob Smith but Nick Alford overcame Dave Baker for 2-2 with Churchills well down on the aggregate. In the last game of the evening Churchill’s Paul Adams made breaks of 59 and 44 to freeze out Derek Fry for their three points.
There was even enough time for Churchill’s Derek Foster to enjoy some well-earned table tennis practice in the other room after his win – you must all try it when you're over there!!!

CHANDLERS FORD CENTRAL END TOTTON REC'S AMAZING RUN
2014-2015 Billiards League – Week 9 – 26 November 2014
Current Southampton Billiards League champions Chandlers Ford Central showed their title credentials as they dished out league leaders Totton Rec's first defeat of this seasons campaign, a 5-1 victory.
Winners for Chandlers were Daniel Zagaroli (69, 66 and 49) over Lee Fitzpatrick, Terry Azor (62 and 48) against Tony Aldridge, Trevor Thorn (32) over Mike Kunzi and Graham Hollick against Brain Cannons. Totton saved their blushes with Steve Allen (47 and 38) beating Tony Hannam.
Curdridge RBL had a fine 4-2 win at Hamble Social after losing the first two games. They fought back with wins for Brian Bull over Will Mildenhall, Derek Fry against Nick Wood and Gwen Gamblin over Paul Knights. Hamble's night started well with victories for Steve Cottrell against Clive Gamblin and Tony Spridgeon over Nick Alford but they just couldn't keep the momentum going.
Sarisbury Social gained revenge for their 4-2 loss at home to Churchills Eastleigh in the first third of the fixtures to record their own 4-2 scoreline away to last years runners-up. Churchills started well with Derek Foster (40) beating Norman Bradfield but John Oldfield (36) fought back by beating Mark Adams to level.
Churchill's Dave Baker gave his side the lead by beating Kas Remzi and Paul Adams looked to be in good form making a fine 70 break against Geoff Knapp. However a determined Knapp made a great 45 break to claw back the advantage and eventually win. Sarisbury's new recruit Jeff James (an ex-town billiards champion from the 1980s) is finding his old form and beat Peter Green comfortably to give his team a deserved victory.
Park Gate RBL visited Shirley Cons and left 4-2 to the good. Winners for Park Gate were Paul Tavender, Chris Christodoulou, and Paul Lawrence against Malcolm Willis, Mike Thatcher and Keith Castles respectively. Shirley's victors were Adrian Bridger over Steve Boterhoek and Mark Emm against Chris Pullen.

Curdridge Royal British Legion welcomed Shirley Conservatives in the Southampton Billiards League and shared out the spoils for a 3-3 draw.
Curdridge's Rob Smith started the evening with a fine 200-174 win against Mike Thatcher but Shirley's Shaun Picton pulled one back by overcoming Nick Alford 200-169. Curdridge's Clive Gamblin wrestled the match back in the home sides favour by beating Keith Castles 200-185 and Derek Fry looked to have won the match by overcoming Sid Hunt 200-176 to lead the aggregate 769-735. ADAMS' 95 BREAK NOT ENOUGH FOR CHURCHILLS AS HAMBLE COME UP TRUMPS!
2014-2015 Billiards League – Week 7 – 12 November 2014
Churchills Eastleigh’s Paul Adams superb break of 95 could not stop his team from losing 4-2 at home to Hamble Social in the Southampton Billiards league.
The break is the highest in the league so far this season and he narrowly failed to take it past the century mark when in prime top-of-the-table position verses Tony Spridgeon. He also made a 31 but could not stop the Hamble man winning with two telling breaks of 20+.
Hamble started off superbly as Will Mildenhall beat Derek Foster (35 break) and Steve Cottrell (39 break) overcame Simon Green. Churchill’s improving Dave Baker then pulled one back as he beat Paul Knights. This set up Spridgeon for his inspired win over Adams. Peter Green saved the Eastleigh side from a 5-1 loss as he overcame Rob Shattock in the last game
The battle between table toppers Totton Rec and second placed Park Gate RBL ended in an entertaining 3-3 draw. Totton’s Tony Aldridge made it seven wins in a row as he beat Paul Lawrence. Paul Tavender continued his good form as he overcame Brian Cannons and Park Gate’s Chris Christodoulou beat Lee Fitzpatrick by eight points.
Totton’s Mike Kunzi beat Steve Boterhoek to level the match and Park Gate’s Chris Pullen overcame Dan Stone to give his team a 3-2 tables win, but after the aggregate was added up, it transpired that Totton had won that by only twenty points, 937 to 957 – four points per player!
Shirley Cons bounced back from a 5-1 loss the week before to record their own 5-1 at Sarisbury Social. Winners for Shirley were Sid Hunt over John Oldfield (53 break), Malcolm Willis (36 break) against Geoff Knapp (30 break), Chris Holland over Jeff James and Keith Castles against new recruit Kaz Remsi. Sarisbury’s Norman Bradfield gained his team’s consolation point against Mike Thatcher.
Champions Chandlers Ford Central visited Curdridge RBL and left 5-1 to the good. Ray Smith bounced back from previous losses to beat Nick Alford. Terry Azor (31, 32) overcame Curdridge’s Dave Fry, Chandler’s Daniel Zagaroli (36, 47, 32) was triumphant over Brian Bull and Satpal Hans beat Curdridge’s Clive Gamblin. Curdridge’s Derek Fry saved his team’s blushes as he beat Wayne Muddiman in the last pairing.

CHURCHILLS EASTLEIGH MOVE OFF THE BOTTOM OF THE TABLE
2014-2015 Billiards League – Week 6 – 5 November 2014
Churchill Eastleigh moved off the bottom of the Southampton Billiards League after a resounding 5-1 victory at Shirley Cons.
Churchill's Simon Green and Shirley's veteran master cueman Chris Holland had a humdinger of a game with Green winning by a nail-biting two points! (the last time I refereed for Chris, he made a first visit break of 127 against a young Daniel Zagaroli in an Usher Cup final played at the old Pot Black Snooker club above C&A in Southampton in the early 90s – so we all know he 'knows the shots'!)
Next Churchill's Dave Baker had a fine third quarter of his match against Keith Castles and triumphed 200-169 and Mark Adams overcame Malcolm Willis 200-171 to give his team a 3-0 lead.
Churchill's Paul Adams made breaks of 48, 44 and 41 during his win over Mike Thatcher to give his side the possibility of a 6-0 whitewash. Shirley's Mark Emm had other designs on the night however, as he made a fine 43 break during the first ten minutes of his game with Derek Foster. Foster replied with a 39 but could not stop the ex-Bitterne Park Social player from winning what was a great game for the spectators – neither deserved to lose!
Totton Rec powered on at the top-of-the-table with a similarly emphatic win against visitors Hamble Social – a 6-0 whitewash no less. But as Tony Aldridge said "a score-line which did not truely reflect the evenings play".
Winners for the leaders were; Mike Kunzi against Rob Shattock, Tony Aldridge (31 break) verses Nick Wood, Lee Fitzpatrick against Will Mildenhall, Brian Cannons over Paul Knights and Dan Stone against Steve Cottrell.
Park Gate RBL stay in touch with Totton Rec thanks to a 5-1 victory over visitors Curdridge RBL. Park Gate's Paul Lawrence beat Brian Bull, But Curdridge's Derek Fry overcame Chris Christodoulou to level the match.
Park Gate's Steve Boterhoek got his team back on track thanks to his eight-point victory over Rob Shattock and Paul Tavender made the match safe with a win over Clive Gamblin. It was left to Chris Pullen to finish proceedings with a fine 200-190 win over in-form and ex-Aerostructures team mate Nick Alford.
Chandlers Ford Central drew 3-3 with visitors Salisbury Social. Winners for Chandlers were Daniel Zagaroli (63,43, 43, 34) and Tery Azor (73, 63, 36) verses John Oldfield and Norman Bradfield. Sarisbury's winners were Geoff Knapp, Jeff James and Dennis Hushley verses Trevor Thorn (30, 32, 40), Graham Hollick and Ray Smith.

SARISBURY'S GREAT WIN OVER IN-FORM PARK GATE RBL
2014-2015 Billiards League – Week 5 – 29 October 2014
Sarisbury Social had a superb 4-2 victory over in-form Park Gate RBL in the Southampton Billiards League.
Sarisbury’s captain John Oldfield was decisive in the aggregate stakes, as he beat Paul Lawrence 200-123, making a 48 break in the process. Park Gate’s Chris Christodoulou pulled one back as he overcame Norman Bradfield. Sarisbury’s Geoff Knapp and Dennis Hushley gave their team the lead, after beating Steve Boterhoek and Mark Stansmore respectively. In the last pairing, improving Paul Tavender, who made a 36 break, overcame Doug Scott for his team’s second point.
Curdridge welcomed leaders Totton Rec and went down 5-1. Totton’s Steve Allen made a 32 break in beating Rob Smith and new recruit Dan Stone made it 2-0 by overcoming Clive Gamblin (30 break). In the last game Tony Aldridge consolidated the win by beating Derek Fry.
Clash of the week was between champions Chandlers Ford Central and runners-up Churchills Eastleigh. The previous season saw Churchills beat their rivals twice and draw 3-3 so they had high expectations! However, this time it was Chandlers that ran out 4-2 winners, thanks to victories for Graham Hollick over Simon Green, Terry Azor against Dave Baker, making runs of 46, 46 and 41, and Daniel Zagaroli (56 break) over Peter Green. Sandwiched between those wins were triumphs for Derek Foster, making a fine 47 and 32 against Ray Smith and Paul Adams (36 and 31 breaks) over Trevor Thorn.
Shirley Cons had a fine 5-1 win at Hamble Social. Winners for Shirley were Mike Thatcher decisively against Nick Wood, Malcolm Willis verses Will Mildenhall, Sid Hunt over Tony Spridgeon and Mark Emm against Paul Knights. Hamble’s point came from a ‘no show’ victory for Steve Cottrell over Shirley’s Keith Castles.

HAMBLE SOCIAL MOVE UP INTO THIRD PLACE AFTER WIN AT CHANDLERS FORD CENTRAL
2014-2015 Billiards League – Week 4 – 22 October 2014
Hamble Social had a fine 5-1 victory away at champions Chandlers Ford Central to move them into third place in the Southampton Billiards League.
Chandlers Ford’s John Mullane, fresh from his fabulous ABC Billiards tournament win over England number one Rob Hall in the semi final, and Chris Taylor in the final (read all about it in our ’Special News’ section), gave his side the lead by beating Rob Shattock, making breaks of 34, 46 and 51.
It was the calm before the storm however, as Hamble reeled off the next four games! Hamble’s Paul Knights had his best win to date as he overcame Daniel Zagaroli and Will Mildenhall made a 34 break during his win against Terry Azor, who made runs of 32 and 36. Steve Cottrell left it late to pip Trevor Thorne (36 break) by seven points and Tony Spridgeon finished proceedings by beating Ray Smith.
Totton Rec stay top after their 4-2 win against visiting Shirley Cons. Winners for Totton were Steve Allen (40 break), Mike Kunzi and Tony Aldridge (34 break) against Sid Hunt, Chris Holland and Mike Thatcher respectively. Shirley fought back with Keith Castles beating Lee Fitzpatrick and Malcolm Willis getting the better of Brian Cannons.
Park Gate are only one point behind Totton after their superb 5-1 win against visitors Churchills Eastleigh. It all went wrong for the Eastleigh side in the first two games, as Chris Christodoulou and Paul Tavender overwhelmed Derek Foster and Paul Adams respectively to take the aggregate point out of the equation!
The next two games could have gone either way, as Churchill’s Peter Green fell agonisingly short by six points to Paul Lawrence and Dave Baker by an even closer four points to Park Gate’s Steve Boterhoek. In the last game Churchill’s Mike Henstredge saved his team’s blushes by potting superbly to beat Mark Stansmore.
Curdridge had a great 5-1 win against visitors Sarisbury Social with wins of Brian Bull against Geoff Knapp, Derek Fry over Doug Scott, Nick Alford against Dennis Hushley and a fine five point win for Gwen Gamblin verses John Oldfield. Norman Bradfield gained Sarisbury their consolation point by beating Clive Gamblin.

A TOPSY-TURVY MATCH BETWEEN SARISBURY SOCIAL AND TOTTON REC
2014-2015 Billiards League – Week 3 – 15 October 2014
An amazing match unfolded at Sarisbury Social between the hosts and Totton Rec in the Southampton Billiards league.
Firstly Totton’s Mick Kunzi decisively beat John Oldfield 200-127, making a 33 break in the process, and then Tony Aldridge increased Totton’s advantage by overcoming Geoff Knapp 200-144, thanks in part to a 44 break. Totton’s youngster of the team, Lee Fitzpatrick then beat Norman Bradfield 200-180 and to cap a fine display Brian Cannons overcame Sarisbury’s new signing James Collinson by the narrow margin of four points!
This meant that Totton were 4-0 up and ahead on the aggregate by 153 points – unassailable you may think. However Sarisbury’s other new player, ex-town champion Jeff James, ‘played a blinder’ according to Tony Aldridge. The ex-Bitterne Park player who played with Aldridge back in the 80s in their all conquering billiards side, made a 35 break during his 200-30 points win against Totton’s Steve Allen, to turn the aggregate on its head and pull it back for Sarisbury to win it by a mere 17 points, 847-830. The match score had gone 4-2 to Totton, but what a finish!
Champions Chandlers Ford Central won their first match of the campaign by beating hosts Shirley Cons 5-1. Winners for Chandlers were Trevor Thorne against Mike Thatcher, John Mullane (75 and 66 breaks) verses veteran Chris Holland, Daniel Zagaroli (79, 53, 41 breaks) against Malcolm Willis and Wayne Muddiman verses Mark Emm. Shirley’s winner was league president Sid Hunt, who beat Graham Hollick.
Curdridge RBL visited Churchills Eastleigh and won the first two games of the evening by the narrow margin of four and six points, thanks to Brian Bull over Derek Foster (31 break) and Clive Gamblin (31 break) against Mike Henstredge. But back came Churchills with Dave Baker making a 30 break during his victory over Derek Fry. Churchill’s Paul Adams made breaks of 54, 51 and 34 but could not stop an inspired Nick Alford winning by 29 points to leave his team 3-1 up. Churchill’s Peter Green secured the aggregate point as he overcame Rob Smith by 37 points and give his side a remarkable 3-3 draw.
Hamble Social had a fine 4-2 win against visitors Park Gate RBL. Winners for Hamble were Nick Wood (38 break) by a nail biting two points over Paul Tavender, Will Mildenhall against Chris Christodoulou and Steve Cottrell decisively against Paul Lawrence. Winners for Park Gate were Chris Pullen against Tony Spridgeon and Mark Stansmore verses Rob Shattock, but by only seven points.

CHURCHILLS WIN AT SARISBURY SOCIAL FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME!
2014-2015 Billiards League – Week 2 – 8 October 2014
Churchils Eastleigh gained their first victory out at Sarisbury Social for some time as they beat John Oldfield's team 4-2 in the Southampton Billiards league.
Churchill's Simon Green played superbly to beat veteran Dennis Hushley, with the Churchill's man making a 31 break and Hushley responding with a 30 himself. On the other table Sarisbury's 'super sub' Doug Scott played above his starred handicap to lead Dave Baker by nearly 100. However, little by little Baker pulled his way back into the match, thanks in part to a 28 break.
Scott responded with some excellent pressure potting and fine edged in-offs to draw level in the final 20 points. But just as it looked as if Baker would claim a stunning come back with only two required for game, Scott pulled out another length of the table pot to help himself to a nail-biting 200-198 victory.
Sarisbury's Norman Bradfield played confidently against Churchill's Derek Foster and won by 200-165, and on the other table the battle between Churchill's Peter Green and Sarisbury's Geoff Knapp ended up another close one, with Green edging it 200-193.
This left the aggregate at 735-763 going into the last pairing of captains John Oldfield and Paul Adams. Both players struggled to settle at first but Adams then found his range with breaks of 58 and 28 to win by 200-155 to give his side a memorable victory.
Totton made it two wins on the spin after defeating current champions Chandlers Ford Central 4-2. Winners for Totton were Steve Allen (41 break) with a fine win over Daniel Zagaroli, who made a great 85. Tony Aldridge against Ray Smith and Lee Fitzpatrick over Graham Hollick.
Chandler's saviours were Terry Azor, making breaks of 61, 40 and 31 against Mike Kunzi and Trevor Thorn making 53 and 35 against Brian Cannons.
Park Gate matched Totton with two wins in a row, after they defeated visitors Shirley Cons 4-2. Winners for Park Gate were Chris Christodoulou, Paul Lawrence (43 and 34) and Steve Boterhoek, against Keith Castles, Malcolm Willis and Mike Thatcher respectively. Shirley's winners were Sid Hunt over Mark Stansmore and Shaun Picton against a very welcome returning Steve Hulbert.
Hamble Social rescued a 3-3 draw out at Curdridge RBL winning the last pairing but losing the aggregate 917-873 even though the won three tables. Winners for Curdridge were Clive Gamblin against Rob Shattock and Nick Alford (31 break) decisively against Steve Cottrell. Hamble's three victors were Nick Wood over Brian Bull 200-193, Tony Spridgeon against Derek Fry and Will Mildenhall over Gwen Gamblin.

The 2014-2015 Southampton and District Billiards League cued-off in style with eight teams competing over the twenty-one match season for the prestigious 1936 shield. Sadly Hythe Social are not playing with us this term but let's hope that they come back into the fold next season.

Park Gate’s Chris Christodoulou got his side off to a great start by beating Daniel Zagaroli, who made breaks of 37, 45 and 54. Basingstoke resident Trevor Thorn got Chandlers back on level terms by overcoming Steve Boterhoek and Graham Hollick gave the champions the lead by defeating Paul Tavender.
Park Gate’s number one Paul Lawrence squared the match by beating Ray Smith, and that left the match poised going into the last pairing of Chandlers captain Terry Azor and Mark Stansmore. Azor made runs of 46 and 35 but could not stop the Park Gate man from winning 200-193, winning the aggregate by 936-923 and taking the match.
Shirley Cons overcame visitors Curdridge RBL 4-2, with wins for Mike Thatcher, Sid Hunt and Mark Emm over Gwen Gamblin, Dave Fry and Trevor Harris respectively. Winners for Curdridge were, Derek Fry by four points over Keith Castles and Clive Gamblin decisively against Malcolm Willis.
