Churchills Eastleigh finish season in style against Curdridge RBL and superb Chandlers Ford Central are finally crowned champions
2016-2017 Billiards League – Week 27 of 27 – April 19 2017
Churchill’s Eastleigh finished their Southampton Billiards league campaign in style by beating visitors Curdridge RBL 5-1.
Churchill’s Derek Foster cued things off nicely by beating Curdridge’s Rob Smith by 200-136, compiling a fantastic 69 break in the process. That was followed by teammate Mike Henstredge's fine win over Curdridge’s Nick Alford by 200-187.
Churchill’s Dave Baker made it 3-0 as he overcame Curdridge’s Derek Fry by 200-163, thanks in part to a 35 break. And it got better for the Eastleigh team as Churchill’s Paul Adams made a fine 59 break and 38 break to beat in-form Clive Gamblin 200-152 for 4-0. Curdridge’s saviour was Brian Bull, as he pipped Peter Green by 200-183 to save the whitewash. Even with the loss, Curdridge RBL finished a creditable third in the league thanks to winning one more match than Park Gate RBL or Totton Rec.
A close battle between Park Gate RBL and Totton Rec ensued at Park Gate, with Park Gate’s Paul Lawrence pipping Brian Cannons by only three points 200-197. Totton’s Mick Kunzi made it 1-1, as he made breaks of 39, 38 and 38 to beat Chris Christodoulou by 200-166.
Park Gate’s Ian Finch then beat Totton’s Tony Aldridge by 200-169, and Chris Pullen made it 3-1, after he overcame Keith Castles by the slender margin of four points 200-196. Totton’s Steve Allen rounded things off by making breaks of 31 and 38 to beat Gate’s Steve Boterhoek by 200-138, and take the team aggregate points total by 962 to 904, to draw the match 3-3. The draw didn't help either team in their final league positioning, but kept Park Gate in fourth spot due to them losing only nine games to Totton's ten.
Terry Azor's Chandlers Ford Central had a superb season with number one Daniel Zagaroli in blistering form, making a total of three league centuries and two cup centuries. John Mullane made a monumental 179 break to take the season high prize. Their teammates all chipped in to help win the league by a staggering 24 points, losing only three matches over the 21 games, so congratulations to them!
In the end there was only ten points between bottom placed St Denys Cons and second placed Sarisbury Social, so a good season for handicaps, although I am sure that at the next AGM we might look at the maximum handicap allowed! I'm sure 70 points is quite a reasonable amount to score...

Totton wreck Hamble's chance to move off the bottom
2016-2017 Billiards League – Week 26 of 27 – April 12 2017
Totton Rec had a comfortable 5-1 victory over under strength visitors and bottom of the table Hamble Social in the Southampton Billiards league.
Totton’s Mick Kunzi re-found his form and beat Hamble’s Tony Spridgeon by 200-155, making a 45 and 32 break in the process. That was followed by a similarly rejuvenated Brian Cannons, who beat Hamble’s Malcolm Willis by 200-184.
That quickly became 3-0 as Totton’s Lee Fitzpatrick overcame Will Mildenhall by 200-140. The saving grace for Hamble was Shaun Murphy’s 200-169 win over Keith Castles, because they unfortunately could only field four players and gave a walkover win to Totton’s Tony Aldridge in the last game.
Churchill’s Eastleigh visited Park Gate RBL and left with a fine 3-3 draw, despite only securing two tables out of the five on offer. Churchill’s Dave Baker (30 break) kick started their evening by decisively beating Paul Tavender by 200-115. And that was followed by Churchill’s Paul Adams making a 35, 33 and 31 during his 200-145 victory over Steve Boterhoek.
Park Gate however sprung into life, with Ian Finch beating Churchill’s Derek Foster by 200-139, despite the Churchills man making a 38 break. Gate’s Chris Christodoulou then pipped Churchill’s Peter Green by an agonising eight points 200-192, with Green in prime position to take the game.
The last pairing was a close contest, until Park Gate's Paul Lawrence pulled away in the latter stages to beat Churchill’s Simon Green by 200-173, although Churchill’s took the team points aggregate total by 904 to 860.
In the match between St Denys Cons and Chandlers Ford Central, St Deny's Chris Bishop arrived at the venue, only to find that his teammates had unfortunately thought that they had a bye that week! Bishop beat Chandler’s Trevor Thorn by 200-192, despite Thorn making a 34 and 40, but Chandlers claimed the other four games as walkovers to disappointingly win the match 5-1.

2016-2017 Billiards League – Week 24 of 27 – March 29 2017
St Denys Cons had a fine 4-2 victory over visitors Sarisbury Social in the Southampton Billiards league. But they remain bottom of the table, but only just, as only 9 points seperate seven teams from second placed Sarisbury.
It started well for Sarisbury as captain John Oldfield beat Graham Garside by 200-176, but St Deny’s Willie Clarke overcame Jeff James by a decisive 200-118, to take command of the team aggregate points total. St Deny's Chris Bishop continued his improvement in the three-ball game by making 39 break to pip Kas Remzi by 13 points, 200-187.

Churchills Eastleigh made it three victories on the spin, as they beat visitors Totton Rec 4-2. Churchill’s Derek Foster (39 break) played well to beat Brian Cannons by 200-169 and that quickly turned into 2-0 as Peter Green beat Totton’s Mick Kunzi by 200-138.
But back came Totton. Churchill’s Paul Adams was in fine form making breaks of 74 and 44 but lost out to a determined Lee Fitzpatrick by 200-152, and Totton’s Matt Osborne made it 2-2, thanks to his 200-181 win over Dave Baker. In the last pairing Churchill’s Mike Henstredge played superbly to overcome experienced veteran Tony Aldridge by 200-146 to take the aggregate points total by 933 to 853 and the match.
Superb Chandlers Ford Central showed why they are the best billiards team in the league, as they dismantled hosts Park Gate RBL by six games to nil, and that was without their top two players Daniel Zagaroli and John Mullane.
Chandler's Graham Hollick made a 31 break in beating Steve Boterhoek by 200-164, and Dave White overcame Paul Tavender by 200-125. Churchills Eastleigh beat champions elect Chandlers Ford Central
2016-2017 Billiards League – Week 22 of 27 – March 15 2017
Churchills Eastleigh had a wonderful 5-1 victory over champions elect Chandlers Ford Central in the Southampton Billiards league. The victory takes the Eastleigh outfit off of the bottom of the table, albeit on matches won, above St Denys Cons.
Churchills made the perfect start as Derek Foster made a fine 51 break to pip Dave White by only ten points 200-190. It looked as if Chandler’s were going to level at 1-1 with their captain Terry Azor making a majestic 95 break against Simon Green, only to break down on a relatively easy cannon to close in on a century. Green had other ideas though as he played well to finish the match by 200-123.
Next up was Churchill’s Mike Henstredge verses a returning Trevor Thorn. The Chandler’s man played superbly, making breaks of 67, 37 and 50 to close in on Henstredge. But Henstredge fought back with some fine all round play running out a 200-188 winner. Chandler’s stopped the whitewash thanks to Mike Thatcher overcoming an improving Dave Baker by 200-170.
In the last pairing Churchill’s Peter Green was only required to score 30 odd points to win the overall team aggregate against John Mullane. Well he went one better by beating the top billiards cueist in the South by 200-1 after the handicaps had come into play, to round off a fine evenings work.
Park Gate RBL helped out Churchills as they beat visitors St Denys Cons 4-2. It looked good for Cons as Graham Garside overcame Paul Lawrence by 200-179, but Park Gate’s Steve Boterhoek played well to beat Chris Bishop (33 and 33 breaks) to level. Park Gate’s Paul Tavender was victorious over Mark Emm by 200-178, but Willie Clarke beat Chris Christodoulou by 200-174 to square the match at 2-2. It was left to Park Gate’s Ian Finch to beat Derek King by 200-133 to win the aggregate and match.
Sarisbury Social visited Totton Rec and left with a 4-2 victory. Sarisbury’s Jamie Collinson beat Mick Kunzi by 42 points to give his team the aggregate advantage 200-158. And that was followed by Sarisbury’s Kas Remzi’s 200-188 win over Brian Cannons. That turned into 3-0, thanks to Geoff Knapp pipping Totton's Lee Fitzpatrick by 200-194.
Totton’s Steve Allen then thrashed Norman Bradfield by 200-96 to wrestle the aggregate advantage back in Totton’s favour. Sarisbury’s John Oldfield (33 break) calmed down proceedings by beating Tony Aldridge by 200-169, but it was not enough to take the team aggregate points total, as Totton won that by a slender 13 points 909-896.

Chandler's John Mullane makes a wonderful 179 to fall two points shy of the league's all time high!
2016-2017 Billiards League – Week 21 of 27 – March 8 2017
Chandlers Ford Central’s John Mullane continued his break building masterclass in the Southampton Billiards league, as he made a monumental 179 during his team’s nail biting 3-3 draw with visitors Curdridge RBL.
Chandler’s started well, with Daniel Zagaroli beating Clive Gamblin by only three points 200-197, thanks in part to three 30 breaks, a 41 and a 73. Back came Curdridge though, with Richard Marshall beating Mike Thatcher by 200-162 to level at 1-1.
It was then Mullane’s time to turn on the style, which has seen him reach next month’s prestigious English Amateur Billiards Championship semi-finals at Darley Dale in Derbyshire. He constructed the 179, along with a 57 and 58, to fall agonosingly close to the all time league high of 181 unfinished, made by Aerostructure’s Dave Burgess in the 1980s! Curdridge's Derek Fry could only watch in awe as he lost by 200-140.
Curdridge’s Brian Bull then squared things again, as he overcame Graham Hollick by 200-153. That set up the last pairing of five as the match decider, and it lived up to the billing. Chandler’s Dave White managed to beat Rob Smith by 200-179, but when the total team aggregate points were added up, it transpired that Curdridge had won it by a single point 916 to 915 to force the draw!
The basement teams clash between St Denys Cons and Churchills Eastleigh had Cons winning by 4-2 to leave the Eastleigh side rooted to the bottom. Winners for St Denys were Graham Garside over Derek Foster (30, 38 breaks), Chris Bishop (38 break) against Paul Adams (38 break) and Mark Emm decisively over Simon Green. Churchill’s saviours were Peter Green against Willie Clarke and Dave Baker (33 break) over Derek King.

League leaders and current champions Chandlers Ford Central had another fantastic result in the Southampton Billiards league – a resounding 6-0 whitewash over hosts Hamble Social.
Chandler’s Graham Hollick got things off to the perfect start as he made a 36 break during his 200-153 victory over Paul Knights. That was followed by a masterclass from in-form Daniel Zagaroli as he made a superb 106 to go with a 41, 42 and 62 to beat Hamble's Mark Spridgeon by 200-145. That turned into 3-0 after Central's Mike Thatcher overcame Tony Spridgeon by 200-154.
English Amateur Billiard semi-finalist John Mullane, who made a wonderful 223 break in his quarter-final, found some good practice for his match at the Whitworth Centre in Darley Dale, Derbyshire on the 1st and 2nd April, by making breaks of 46, 87, 79 and 36 to beat Hamble's Malcolm Willis by 200-151. Chandler’s Dave White wrapped up proceedings by beating Rob Shattock by 200-168.
In the match between hosts Sarisbury Social and Curdridge RBL, Curdridge won the first two tables, thanks to Derek Fry beating John Oldfield (39 break) by 200-146, and Trevor Harris overcoming Norman Bradfield by 200-104.
But Sarisbury fought back with wins for Jeff James (33 break) over Clive Gamblin by 200-154, Geoff Knapp victorious against Richard Marshall by 200-179, and Kas Remzi, who made a 29 unfinished break to beat Brian Bull by 200-169. St Denys Cons postponed their match with hosts Totton Rec due to having only three players available.

A great win for Churchills but St Denys leapfrog them with a win as well
2016-2017 Billiards League – Week 19 of 27 – February 22 2017
Churchills Eastleigh beat visitors Sarisbury Social 4-2 but found themselves bottom of the Southampton Billiards league table, after their nearest rivals St Denys Cons overcame Hamble Social 5-1 to leapfrog them.
It started well for Sarisbury as John Oldfield beat Derek Foster by 44 points, 200-156, but back roared the Eastleigh outfit with Simon Green pipping Kas Remzi by a nail biting 200-195! Churchill’s Dave Baker then beat Norman Bradfield by a considerable 52 points, 200-148, but another close pairing had Sarisbury’s Jeff James closing out Sid Reid by only 6 points, 200-194. It was left to Churchill’s veteran three-ball stylist Peter Green to beat Geoff Knapp by 200-156, to take the aggregate points total by 950-899 and the match.
St Denys Cons went one better in the games won column, as they comprehensively beat visitors Hamble Social 5-1. Winners for Cons were Chris Bishop over Paul Knights by 200-160, Graham Garside (31 break) against Tony Spridgeon by 200-147, Mark Emm over Malcolm Willis by 200-163 and Willie Clarke against Will Mildenhall by 200-173, to win the aggregate by 954 to 843. Sandwiched between St Denys’ wins was Hamble’s Shaun Murphy’s 200-154 victory against Derek King.
Curdridge RBL moved to within one point of third-placed Totton Rec after they beat them 5-1. Curdridge’s Clive Gamblin (30 break) beat Mick Kunzi by 200-63, and Richard Marshall made it 2-0, after overcoming Tony Aldridge by 200-124. Totton’s Keith Castles pipped Brian Bull by 200-192 to give his side hope, but it was false hope, as Curdridge’s Derek Fry beat Brian Cannons by 200-173, and Rob Smith rubbed salt into the wounds as he pipped Lee Fitzpatrick by only three points, 200-197!

Aldridge and Finch play out a photo finish
2016-2017 Billiards League – Week 18 of 27 – February 15 2017
It went down to the wire in the match between hosts Toton Rec and Park Gate RBL in the Southampton Billiards league this week.
Totton’s Keith Castles cued things off nicely with his 200-129 victory over Paul Tavender, and Mick Kunzi (30 break) made it 2-0 after overcoming Park Gate's Chris Pullen by a nail biting 200-195. Park Gate fought back with Steve Boterhoek pipping Matt Osborne by only one point 200-199! And that was followed by Park Gate’s Chris Christodoulou beating Steve Allen by 200-138, to leave the match tantalisingly balanced going into the last pairing.
Tony Aldridge drew Ian Finch, and looked like he was going to lose, as Finch found himself requiring seven points for game. Finch scored six and unfortunately ‘double-baulked’ himself, requiring one scoring shot for victory! A grateful Aldridge stepped in to make an unfinished break of 16 to win the game, take the team aggregate points total 937-923 and the match 4-2 – phew!
Churchill’s Eastleigh visited Curdridge RBL and drew the match 3-3. This was after being greeted by some wonderful new cloths that has transformed Curdridge's two tables into fine playing surfaces. Winners for Churchills were Derek Foster, Dave Baker (34 break) and Mike Henstredge over Richard Marshall, Clive Gamblin and Rob Smith respectively. Curdridge's saviours were Derek Fry against Paul Adams (39 and 31 breaks) and Brian Bull over Peter Green, to help them win the aggregate points total by only 22 points 889-877.

St Denys Cons hand out Chandlers Ford's first loss, but another wonderful century for Zagaroli
2016-2017 Billiards League – Week 17 – February 8 2017
St Denys Cons pulled off a remarkable 4-2 victory over current leaders Chandlers Ford Central in the Southampton Billiards league, that also saw a wonderful century break from Chandlers’ Daniel Zagaroli.
St Denys' Mark Emm beat Terry Azor by 200-22, and that was after Azor had made breaks of 34, 47 and 31. St Denys’ Chris Bishop made a timely 32 unfinished against Graham Hollick to overcome the Chandlers man by 200-181. St Denys' Derek King had a humdinger of a tussle with Mike Thatcher, but lost out by a single point 200-199!
St Denys' Graham Garside had better luck, as he won by only three points 200-197 against Dave White. The crowning glory of the evening came in the pairing of St Denys' Willie Clarke and Daniel Zagaroli. Zagaroli had already made two centuries this season (one in the league and one in the Usher Cup) and made it a wonderful hat trick as he racked up a 128 to go with a 41 and 49 in beating Clarke by only seven points 200-193! It could not however rescue the team aggregate points total as St Denys won that by 992 to 800 to hand out the leaders first defeat of the season.
Hamble Social had great 4-2 victory over visitors Totton Rec to go above them in the table. Hamble's Malcolm Willis win over Mick Kunzi (33 break) by 200-144 cued things off, but Totton’s Matt Osborne levelled by beating Shaun Murphy by 200-174. Hamble made it 2-1 as Tony Spridgeon overcame Totton’s Keith Castles by 200-162. The scores were level again though, as Totton’s Tony Aldridge beat Will Mildenhall by 200-141. It was left to Hamble’s Rob Shattock to win his game against Brian Cannons by 200-192, and the team aggregate by only 17 points 915-898, and consequentially the match.
Churchills Eastleigh played out a tantalising 3-3 draw with visitors Park Gate RBL, winning the aggregate by only 40 points in the last pairing. Churchill’s Derek Foster made a 39 and a 30 to beat Steve Boterhoek 200-177 in a high-class encounter. On the other table Churchill’s Simon Green played well to beat Paul Lawrence by 200-123 to gain the aggregate advantage. Back came Park Gate though with Chris Christodoulou beating Peter Green by 200-180.
Park Gate’s Chris Pullen played well against Churchill’s Paul Adams, with Adams closing the handicap gap with breaks of 42, 41 and 53, but could not stop Pullen from winning by 200-176. In the final game, Churchill’s Dave Baker led against Ian Finch, but Finch made a fine 32 break at the death to win by 200-184, but could not win the aggregate total as Churchills tipped the balance by 940 to 900.

Park Gate roared back with wins for Paul Lawrence over Brian Bull by 200-153, Chris Pullen against Clive Gamblin by 200-158 and Ian Finch against Trevor Harris by 200-188.
Chandlers Ford Central just can’t be beaten at the moment, as they won again against visitors Sarisbury Social. Chandlers started well as Daniel Zagaroli made breaks of 34, 30, 38, 32, 37, and 41 to freeze out John Oldfield. Sarisbury replied with Kas Remzi overcoming Terry Azor (58 break) by 200-75 to level at 1-1. Chandlers’ Mike Thatcher made it 2-1 by beating Geoff Knapp by 200-151. CURDRIDGE RBL WIN FIRST THREE GAMES TO BEAT VISITORS HAMBLE SOCIAL
2016-2017 Billiards League – Week 15 – January 25 2017
Curdridge RBL had a fine 4-2 victory over visitors Hamble Social in the Southampton Billiards league.
Curdridge's Richard Marshall got his team off to the perfect start as he overcame Malcolm Willis by 200-116. That was followed by Clive Gamblin's 200-180 victory over Hamble's Mark Spridgeon. That turned into 3-0 after Brian Bull beat Rob Shattock by 200-185.
Hamble fought back with Tony Spridgeon making breaks of 39 and 30 during his 200-176 win over Gwen Gamblin, and Will Mildenhall then overcame Curdridge's Rob Smith by 200-162, but not by enough to win the team points aggregate, as Curdridge won that by 938-881.
St Denys Cons had their second win in two weeks to move themselves off of the bottom of the table for the first time, thanks to a 4-2 scoreline at Sarisbury Social. Sarisbury's John Oldfield (31 and 39 breaks) and Norman Bradfield won by the narrow margin of three points and ten points against Willie Clarke and Mark Emm respectively.

Curdridge RBL inflicted only the third defeat for Sarisbury Social this season in the Southampton Billiards league, a superb 5-1 victory.
They cued things off in style as Rob Smith beat Sarisbury's Geoff Knapp (52 break) by 200-182. But back came Sarisbury with Norman Bradfield overcoming Clive Gamblin by exactly the same score! Curdridge's Derek Fry then went one better by pipping experienced John Oldfield by a slender 200-193.

Totton Rec visited St Denys Cons and left with a fine 5-1 win. St Deny's Willie Clarke gave his side the perfect start thanks to a 200-198 nail biter against Keith Castles. But that was their only success as Totton's Steve Allen beat Ade Walsh by 200-192, Tony Aldridge overcame St Deny's Chris Bishop 200-105, Totton's Brian Cannons beat Derek King by 200-141 and Mike Kunzi made breaks of 37, 42 and 37 unfinished to pip St Deny's Mark Emm by 200-185.
Hamble Social visited table toppers and champions Chandlers Ford Central and left with a creditable 3-3 draw. Chandler's Daniel Zagaroli was back to his scoring best, making breaks of 45, 48, 37, 31, 33, and 52 unfinished, to beat an impressed Shaun Murphy. But Rob Shattock took handicap advantage to the max as he overcame Terry Azor by a significant 200-2 to give his side the team point's total aggregate advantage.
Chandler's Graham Hollick then beat Will Mildenhall by only three points 200-197 and Mike Thatcher made it 2-2 after beating Hamble's Malcolm Willis 200-143. HAMBLE SOCIAL WIN AND A WORLD CHAMPION JOINS OUR RANKS
2016-2017 Billiards League – Week 10 – December 7 2016
Hamble Social had a humdinger of a match with newcomers St Denys Cons in the Southampton Billiards league and pipped them 4-2, winning the aggregate points total by 979 to 948.
Hamble’s Will Mildenhall and Con’s Willie Clarke both played well with Clarke pulling away at the start, but Mildenhall held his nerve and made a fantastic 46 break to help him win by 200-181. Then St Denys came back with Chris Bishop beating Tony Spridgeon by a nail biting 200-193.
Up next was St Denys Con’s new lady player, Portsmouth’s Emma Bonney verses Paul Knights. Emma’s claim to fame is that she is the current World Ladies Billiards Champion, and has won it on no fewer than 11 occasions, and reached the final of the Ladies World Snooker Championship three times, losing in the 2015 final to Ng On Yee from Hong Kong. Knights handled himself well against such revered opposition and came through to win by 200-175 with Emma’s handicap being minus 100 for her first three games. It’s great to have Emma playing in our league and we should all hope to learn from her skill and experience in the coming months.
Hamble’s Rob Shattock paired up against Nigel Ward, another Portsmouth newcomer, who impressed with breaks of 38, 46 and 32. But it was Shattock who came out on top by another close score of 200-192. St Denys Cons Derek King played well against Shaun Murphy and won by 200-186 but could not quite wrestle the handicap points total away from Hamble.
Sarisbury Social continued their fine form by powering to a superb 6-0 whitewash over visitors Churchills Eastleigh. Winners for Sarisbury were John Oldfield (55, 36 break) over Dave Baker, Norman Bradfield (52 break) against Paul Adams (37, 31 break), Geoff Knapp over Mike Henstredge, Kaz Remzi against Derek Foster (39 break) and Jeff James completed the rout, winning against Peter Green.
Totton welcomed Curdridge RBL and won 5-1. Totton’s Mick Kunzi continued his fine form by making an early 45 break and then, requiring 82 to run out, fashioned a fine 75 break to eventually win against relative newcomer Richard Marshall. Curdridge’s Clive Gamblin fought back to beat Brian Cannons but Totton’s Tony Aldridge (45 break) then overcame Brian Bull. Totton’s Lee Fitzpatrick and Keith Castles finished the match in style by beating Derek Fry and Rob Smith respectively.

HAMBLE HOLD OUT FOR A DRAW
2016-2017 Billiards League – Week 6 – November 9th 2016
Hamble Social held out for a fine 3-3 draw against visitors Curdridge RBL in the Southampton Billiards league.
It started well for Curdridge, as Brian Bull overcame newcomer Keith Symmons by 200-135, but back came Hamble with Tony Spridgeon beating Clive Gamblin by 200-167, to leave the aggregate at 535-552 in Curdridge’s favour.
Hamble’s Shaun Murphy played well to beat the more experienced Rob Smith by 200-185, and that was followed by Paul Knight’s victory by 200-188 over newcomer Richard Marshall, to leave the team aggregate points total beautifully poised at 740-735 to Curdridge. It was left to Curdridge stalwart Derek Fry to gain his team’s second point of the match by beating Rob Shattock 200-181, and win the team aggregate by 940-916.
Shirley Cons also had a great 3-3 draw against visitors Churchills Eastleigh, and that was after winning only two tables. But it could have been very different as three games went down to the last four points! Churchill’s Peter Green pipped Mike Thatcher by a nail biting two points, Dave Baker overcame Chris Holland by only three points and Derek Foster, helped by a 35 break, beat Sid Hunt by only four points.
Layered in between those games was a fine win for Keith Castles over Paul Adams, who made a 52 break, and Shirley’s Malcolm Willis who beat Mike Henstredge, which left the aggregate at 991-925 to Shirley.
The battle between last season’s champions and the runners-up had Chandlers Ford Central beating Park Gate RBL 5-1. Park Gate’s Paul Lawrence gave his side their only point by beating Graham Hollick, but that was followed by wins for Chandler’s Terry Azor (51 break) over Chris Christodoulou, Trevor Thorn against Gate’s Ian Finch, Chandler’s Daniel Zagaroli over Steve Boterhoek and Dave White against Gate’s Chris Pullen.
Sarisbury Social visited newcomers St Denys Cons and left with a 4-2 victory. Winners for Sarisbury were Kas Remzi over Mark Emm, John Oldfield against Graham Garside and Norman Bradfield over Ade Walsh. St Denys victors were Chris Bishop against newcomer James Collinson and Derek King over Geoff Gnapp. Sarisbury won the aggregate by 904 points to 859.
Totton Rec had this week’s bye.

KUNZI'S SUPERB 95 BREAK CAN'T STOP AZOR'S MEN FROM ACHIEVING VICTORY
2016-2017 Billiards League – Week 5 – November 2nd 2016
Current Southampton billiard league champions Chandlers Ford Central had a humdinger of a match with visitors Totton Rec as they came out 5-1 winners.
Totton got off to a great start with Tony Aldridge beating Dave White by a nail biting 200-191, but the hosts fought back with an even closer win for Trevor Thorn, as he made a 30 break during his 200-194 victory over Lee Fitzpatrick.
This set up the game of the evening as Chandlers' captain Terry Azor was paired against Totton’s Mick Kunzi. It was a game of two halves, as Azor caught up the handicap deficit and took a lead of 126 points, helped by breaks of 37, 39, 39 and a fine 77. This inspired Dorset player Kunzi, as he made a fantastic 95 break (narrowly missing out on a deserved 100 by missing a difficult pot red, with his opponents white hovering near the top spot!), the highest so far this season, to get within 33 points of the 200 required. Azor had other ideas though, as he composed himself and finished the game with four visits to the table.
Chandlers' Daniel Zagaroli then made runs of 50, 80 and 45 to help beat John Ransome by only 200-191. Chandlers decisive game had Graham Hoillick beating Steve Allen 200-20, which gave his team the aggregate team points total 991-772.
Churchills Eastleigh had a fine 4-2 victory over visiting Hamble Social. Churchills Derek Foster cued things off by beating Shaun Murphy, thanks in part to a fine 53 break and a 32 unfinished. Hamble fought back with Will Mildenhall playing well with a 35 break in beating Peter Green. Churchill’s Dave Baker made a 39 break in beating Keith Symmons, but Hamble’s Rob Shattock then beat Simon Green for 2-2. It was left to Churchill’s Paul Adams to make a 56 break and a 37 to beat Tony Spridgeon by only 9 points and take the aggregate 945-905.
St Denys Cons visited Curdridge RBL but went down 4-2. Curdridge won the first two pairings with Gwen Gamblin beating returning Mark Emm by an agonising 200-199, and husband Clive held his nerve to overcome St Deny’s Ade Walsh by only 200-198. St Denys Chris Bishop made a 31 break and made it 2-1 by beating Brian Bull, but Curdridge’s Derek Fry overcame Derek King, who made a 31 break, and Rob Smith finished the match by overcoming Willie Clarke, but could not stop St Denys winning the aggregate point 953-927.
Sarisbury Social could only field four players against Park Gate RBL and consequentially lost 4-2. Park Gate’s Chris Christodoulou beat John Oldfield, but Sarisbury’s Norman Bradfield then overcame Ian Finch. Park Gate’s Steve Boterhoek played well to beat Geoff Knapp, but Sarisbury’s Kaz Remzi pipped Chris Pullen by eight points for his team’s second point, but could not stop Park Gate winning the aggregate point 756-711.
Shirley Cons had this week’s bye.

CURDRIDGE RBL START WELL AND TWO 70 BREAKS IN THE FIRST WEEK...
2016-2017 Billiards League – Week 1 – October 5th 2016
The Southampton Billiard League started it’s 2016-2017 season in fine style with one new team joining its ranks – St Denys Cons, and two players making seventy breaks.
Current league champions Chandlers Ford Central welcomed Shirley Cons and started well, with John Mullane making a fine 79 break to go with a 36 in beating Malcolm Willis, who was probably still feeling the effects of traveling to see Europe’s Ryder Cup exploits in Minnesota, USA!
Shirley’s Chris Holland revived memories of his classic match with Daniel Zagaroli in the 1980’s and beat him 200-148. Chandler’s captain Terry Azor made runs of 32, 41 and 54 to beat Keith Castles 220-161, but Shirley’s Mike Thatcher squared the match by overcoming Trevor Thorn (30 break) by 200-137. It was left to a returning Sid Hunt to beat Chandlers Ford's Dave White 200-176 to win the match 4-2 and aggregate point 923 to 861.
This week's other 70 break came from Churchills’ Paul Adams who made a fine 78 to go with a 34, 33 and 30 in beating Sarisbury Social’s Kaz Remzi 200-175. Prior to that, Churchill’s Derek Foster had made a fine 54 and 30 in pipping Geoff Knapp (41 break) 200-192. This was Churchills only successes however, as Norman Bradfield, John Oldfield (47 break) and Jeff James overcame Mike Henstredge, Sid Reid and Simon Green respectively for a great 4-2 away victory.
Curdridge RBL make the early running at the top after a great 5-1 win against visiting Totton Rec. It could have been so different though, as Totton’s Lee Fitzpatrick won the first game against Clive Gamblin 200-92. But back came Curdridge with Nick Alford beating Brian Cannons 200-189, Rob Smith overcoming Mike Kunzi 200-42, Brian Bull beating Steve Allen 200-130, and Derek Fry making a fine 30 unfinished to beat Tony Aldridge 200-119, for the match and aggregate point 892 to 680.
Hamble Social unfortunately could only field two players for their match at St Denys Cons so had to postpone and Park Gate RBL had this week’s bye.
